How to Replace Corrupt Institutions (and Get Rich Doing it!)
5 Parallel Economy Businesses YOU Can Build
By Joe Jarvis
The point of building a parallel economy is to replace the corrupt and untrustworthy institutions which you cannot rely on– like public schools, banks including the Federal Reserve, big tech companies, big pharma and so on.
In addition to denying them our “business” (if you can call it that), we also can benefit by providing an alternative product, service, or company to their fleeing customers.
That means helping people live free and independent of these incompetent or intentionally harmful institutions, while also grabbing a piece of their power and money for yourself.
It’s a win win for anyone who’s not a corrupt psychopath.
Starting a parallel economy business is good for you, and it’s good for the world.
You just have to think about where your interests and expertise meet the needs of people currently dependent on the bad guys.
Here are a few ideas to get the blood pumping, and at the end of the article, I’ll show you how to get 12 more business ideas for the parallel economy.
Install Off-Grid Energy and Water Systems
Local infrastructure like water and power is increasingly threatened by centralizing it. That leaves it vulnerable to attacks, or natural disasters. Not to mention those public health officials who threatened to shut off utilities to businesses who didn’t comply with their health edicts.
One business that could help people break free from centralized utilities is to provide complete off-grid power (solar, hydro, wind) and rainwater (or well) system installation on homes and businesses.
You can sell and install water filtration systems, and graywater outputs used to flush toilets, or to water gardens.
You can educate customers on the off-grid benefits of composting toilets, which turn human waste into safe, rich compost that can feed a garden.
It’s a basic business model. Find wholesalers who sell the equipment for a reasonable price, and then charge a markup, and installation fees. More info on how to capture the market at the end of this article.
Provide Education Alternatives
If you haven’t noticed, people are fed up with public schools. There’s Critical Race Theory that indoctrinates children with either a victim mentality, or shames them for being an oppressor. Then there’s the Covid protocols, sexual course material, physical danger, and just the poor quality of education.
So give parents a better option than screaming at their local school board. Give them an alternative.
This could be as simple as offering nanny or babysitting services— it’s important to be careful with the language you use if you don’t want to run into compliance issues running an unlicensed daycare or private school.
Tutoring is another obvious service to provide, especially if you are already qualified to be a public school teacher. Tutoring is nothing new, so what you need to focus on here is marketing your skills to the right people.
What is it that parents need that they aren’t getting?
Do they feel their knowledge is inadequate to homeschool their children on certain subjects?
Do they need a cheaper solution than a one on one tutor or private school?
What if, say, six families split the cost of a full time tutor?
At $50 an hour, 6 hours per day, five days per week, for 40 weeks per year, that’s $60,000 per year for the teacher with 12 weeks off, and only $250 per week in session for each of the six families participating.
Provide your potential customers the info they need to make the decision. Find out how their kids can still participate in sports being homeschooled. Find out if they can get money back from the school for homeschooling expenses. Offer additional services, like driving kids to extracurriculars.
The possibilities here are endless, and this is an enormous market.
Create a Club for Community Support
Clubs are a great way to engage like-minded community members.
You can form it around a type of labour exchange, like all chipping in on big projects in each other’s gardens. Or you could form it around a common interest, like cryptocurrency, foraging, programming, or being active in local elections.
When you charge a membership fee, you are not serving the general public. So you won’t be subject to the same onerous startup costs and regulations of something like a restaurant.
But clubs can still be very profitable. You can sell tickets to events, or ask members to donate for drinks at a meeting, for example.
The best way to ensure you have a trustworthy group of members is to require new members to be introduced by an existing member. Founding members could be part owners, or friends and associates who have mutual interests.
What makes clubs special is a theme, or characteristic which binds everyone together. Your club might be centered around active learning, like book clubs, or a physical garden from which members get a share.
But the social element still distinguishes clubs from other organizations like farm shares, where you simply pick up the food and go home.
And sometimes social is all that matters—a sports club where people meet to watch games and participate in fantasy drafts. It might feel a lot like having the guys over for a big game, except that the club profits from hosting the fun event.
If you have a good event space, you could try hosting a paid event to see if you can generate interest. Center it around a cause or charity that the cost of attendance will benefit so that friends and acquaintances won’t just think you’re being cheap hosting a party.
Explain to your guests your goals, and the dream of what your club could be.
Integrate Businesses with Cryptocurrency
Become a local crypto-evangelist and help businesses accept crypto for their goods and services.
There are plenty of tools out there that allow businesses to accept various cryptos more officially through a point of sales cash register system, or informally through their phone.
You could set up as a service provider selling and maintaining the systems, or as a promoter to bring in customers who want to pay with crypto.
You could also tailor to the needs of the business owner, by helping them convert the currency to fiat if they wish, or store it securely in a hardware wallet. Maybe you could even integrate a their suppliers, and allow the whole supply chain to function on cryptocurrency.
Plant Food Forests and Edible Self-Sustaining Landscaping
One method to grow a lot of your own food is to set up self-sustaining food production with little effort through permaculture.
By planting in a way that mimics nature, you can let nature automate the process.
That’s the idea behind a food forest and once it is established, you can simply go for a walk to pick what you need.
One you have your food forest, have tested procedures, and found the best plants for your area, then you can use your food forest as a model to show potential customers.
You can then offer your services designing and planting a food forest for them, or hold classes at your own forest.
This is all just a tiny little random sampling of the types of businesses that could really strengthen communities so that they are more resilient against external forces.
These types of businesses form a strong foundation that allow people to rely less on far flung institutions in Washington DC, and more on their neighbors.
