In the “Inspired” interview above, I discuss what I believe are some of the most important dietary and lifestyle strategies to safeguard your health, starting with avoiding seed oils (also commonly referred to as vegetable oils). Examples of cooking oils to avoid include canola, corn, rapeseed, cottonseed and soybean oil.

The reason for this recommendation is these kinds of industrial seed oils contain high amounts of a harmful omega-6 fat called linoleic acid (LA).  LA is not dangerous in and of itself. The danger is really in the dosing. Most people consume up to 10 times more LA than they need, and the excessive amount is what causes the problem.

LA is referred to as an essential fat, which is true. You do need some. But it’s present in nearly all foods — including whole foods but processed foods and condiments in particular — so there’s virtually no way for you to become deficient.

In all likelihood, you’re getting far more than your body needs, and in excess, LA creates free radicals that cause oxidative stress and damage your DNA, cell membranes and mitochondria. In this way, they contribute to chronic degenerative diseases of all kinds and premature aging.

The best way to ensure your LA intake is within the safe range is to use a nutritional calculator such as Cronometer. Ideally, it is best to enter your food for the day before you actually eat it. The reason for this is quite simple: It’s impossible to delete the food once you have already eaten it, but you can easily delete it from your menu if you find something pushes you over the ideal limit.

Once you’ve entered the food for the day, go to the “Lipid” section on the lower left side of the Cronometer app. To find out how much LA is in your diet for that day, just note how many grams of omega-6 is present. About 90% of the omega-6 you eat is LA. You can also move your cursor over the omega-6 field and the program will rank the order your largest contributors of LA, and tell you how much is in each food.

As a general rule, anything over 10 grams of LA a day is likely to cause problems. The lower the better, but a reasonable goal for most people is to get your level below 5 grams per day. So, how do you cut seed oils out of your diet? Top culprits to minimize or eliminate include:

  • Vegetable oils or seed oils used in cooking

  • Processed foods, especially sauces, dressings and other condiments

  • All restaurant foods (not just fast food), as most will cook the food in seed oil, not butter or lard

  • Conventionally raised chicken and pork (both are high in LA due to being fed omega-6 grains1)

  • Most seeds and nuts (most, with the exception of macadamia nuts are loaded with LA)

  • Bread and other grain products

The next question then becomes, what do you replace these oils with? While I’m not a fan of avocado oil, fresh avocados are a great source of healthy fat as long as you limit them to one per day or less. Both olive oil and avocado oil, however, are problematic in that most of these oils are adulterated with cheap seed oils and/or have gone rancid.

It’s very difficult to find really high-quality, fresh, unadulterated olive and avocado oil. For example, a 2020 Food Control report2 found a vast majority of commercially available avocado oils labeled as “extra virgin” and “refined” were in fact adulterated and of poor quality; 82% were found to have gone rancid before their expiration date.3 The same goes for olive oil.

“For cooking, excellent substitutions include butter, tallow, ghee and organic coconut oil. Lard used to be fine, but virtually all commercial hogs for the past 50 years have been fed grains, which makes lard relatively high in LA.”

Still, even if you do find a good brand, I would limit the amount of olive oil or avocado oil to 1 tablespoon a day, as they can be high in LA. The total amount varies from brand to brand. In the case of olive oil, it could be as low as 3% or as high as 25%, depending on the type of olives used. Your best bet is to simply assume there’s LA in there and limit the amount you use each day.

For cooking, excellent substitutions include butter, tallow, ghee and organic coconut oil. Lard used to be fine, but virtually all commercial hogs for the past 50 years have been fed grains, which makes lard relatively high in LA.

Butter contains retinol (the active form of vitamin A), vitamin D, E and K2, antioxidants, minerals and iodine, all of which are important for health.4 About 20% of butterfat also consists of short- and medium-chain fatty acids, which are used right away for quick energy and therefore don’t contribute to fat levels in your blood. Therefore, a significant portion of the butter you consume is used immediately for energy — similar to a carbohydrate.

Chicken fat is lower on my list of cooking oils primarily because of the unhealthy diet chickens are fed. Conventional chickens are routinely fed genetically engineered grains loaded with glyphosate, so their fat will be negatively affected. The grains and corn are also loaded with LA, which will make the fat higher in LA. The same is true for pork, so when buying lard, make sure it’s from organically raised animals.

Chemical-dependent farming has depleted soils of many important minerals. While many are frantically concerned about the looming fertilizer shortage, there are very effective and efficient ways to grow food without synthetic fertilizers. The switch-over, however, does take time, so it’s not an immediate solution. But, in the long-term, if farmers do the right thing, we could actually improve our food production.

Soil depletion is the reason why many of us need to take nutritional supplements. This is particularly true if you’re eating a primarily plant-based diet. If you’re a vegan or vegetarian, you’re at high risk for vitamin B12 deficiency, which can have serious ramifications for your health, especially your neurological function. Low B12 can also lead to elevated homocysteine, which raises your risk for dementia and cardiovascular problems.

B12 is best taken either by injection or sublingually (under the tongue). You also want to make sure you’re taking methylcobalamin, not cyanocobalamin (which is the most commonly found B12). When taken sublingually (either by tablet or spray), it goes straight into your bloodstream.

If you take it as an oral supplement, you have to rely on a glycoprotein produced in your stomach called intrinsic factor, which binds to the B12 and shuttles it into the intestine to the end of the small intestine where it’s absorbed. As you get older, you lose the ability to produce intrinsic factor, making you more likely to suffer from B12 deficiency.

Another important nutrient is carnosine, a dipeptide (meaning it has two amino acids — beta alanine and histidine — and carnosine is found in meat. It’s really important for reducing oxidative stress, especially as it relates to LA.

LA is highly susceptible to oxidation, and as the fat oxidizes, it breaks down into harmful subcomponents such as advanced lipid oxidation end products (ALEs) and oxidized LA metabolites (OXLAMs). These ALEs and OXLAMs are what cause the damage.

Carnosine binds to ALEs like a magnet and acts as a sort of sacrificial sink. It’s a substitute target for this really profoundly damaging molecule. In this way, carnosine allows your body to excrete the ALEs from your body before they damage you.

However, taking a carnosine supplement is not a good idea. Not only is it expensive, but your body doesn’t break it down well. If you do opt for a supplement, I recommend taking beta alanine, as this precursor will help raise your carnosine level. The best way is to eat animal products. You typically won’t need a supplement if you eat sufficient amounts of animal proteins.

Carnitine is another important nutrient found in animal foods. It is especially useful for building muscle and facilitating fats into your mitochondria for energy production. A special type of carnitine called acetyl carnitine, taken in large amounts (1 to 2 grams a day), is very beneficial for your memory, and when used topically in your eyes, as an eye drop formulation, can help prevent cataracts.

Magnesium and copper deficiencies are also very common. Copper deficiency is particularly problematic as it contributes to high iron levels in your tissues, which is extremely potent oxidative stressor.

One of the best way to raise your copper level is to eat whole foods high in copper, acerola cherries being the classic example. The acerola cherry is high in tyrosinase, which is high in copper. Magnesium is also something that most people need these days.

Vegans and vegetarians can also run into problems through oxalates. Oxalate, also known as oxalic acid, is found in a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. While not harmful in and of itself — your liver actually produces oxalate naturally5 — oxalates can cause problems when they overaccumulate.

Overaccumulation can occur either from overconsumption, or because your body either absorbs exceptionally high amounts of soluble oxalates or overproduces oxalate (primary hyperoxaluria6), or if you excrete excessive amounts of urinary calcium (hypercalciuria7).8

An overaccumulation of oxalate in your kidneys can lead to the development of calcium oxalate kidney stones, the most common type of kidney stones.9 If you are predisposed to kidney stones or have calcium oxalate stones already, your doctor may recommend avoiding foods rich in oxalates, such as dark green vegetables (especially spinach and Swiss chard), bran, rhubarb, beets and beet greens, chocolate, nuts (especially almonds, cashews and peanuts), nut milks and nut butters.10 11

It can also be helpful to increase your calcium intake. While this may seem counterintuitive, seeing how calcium is the largest component of these stones, the answer to this paradox is that high dietary calcium actually blocks a chemical action that causes the formation of the stones in the first place.12 13

Oxalates can affect other organs and conditions as well. Examples include fibromyalgia, vulvodynia (vulvar pain)14 and chronic inflammation.15 Oxalate also impairs the absorption of nonheme iron and can lower your iron stores,16 needed for red blood cell formation.

What’s more, oxalates have the ability to chelate a number of toxic metals, including mercury and lead. Unfortunately, they do this by trapping the heavy metals in your tissues, which makes it difficult to eliminate them.17

Exercise is, of course, a foundational aspect of good health, but the type of exercise you do can make a big difference. I’ve been an avid exerciser since 1968, and for the first 40 years of my life I focused almost exclusively on cardiovascular exercise such as running.

I completely ignored resistance training. Now, as I’ve gotten older, reality has driven home the importance of building and maintaining muscle. An estimated 9 out of 10 Americans are metabolically inflexible, insulin resistant or both, which contributes to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, inflammation and arthritis, just to name a few.

One of the ways you can improve your metabolic flexibility is to have more muscle mass, because muscle is the biggest sink in your body for glucose (sugar). So, when you eat a meal, the receptors in the cells of your muscles, called GLUT4 receptors, absorb blood sugar, thereby lowering the level of sugar in your blood. Once inside your muscle, the blood sugar is converted to glycogen and stored for when your muscle needs it.

So, if you have enough muscle mass, you have built-in protection against high blood sugar and insulin spikes that cause insulin resistance and diabetes. You also need to be mindful of your LA intake, because high levels of LA are more damaging to metabolic flexibility than high levels of carbs.

What’s more, glutamine, a nonessential amino acid (meaning your body can generate it) is an important nutrient source for your immune cells, and the way your body generates glutamine is through muscle contraction. So, when you’re contracting skeletal muscle, you’re quite literally nourishing your immune system.

To build muscle, it’s really important to get enough protein in your diet, ideally animal protein. There are 20 amino acids and nine of them are essential, which means you have to get them from your diet, as your body cannot make them from other substrates. In particular, skeletal muscle requires branched-chain amino acids — leucine, isoleucine and valine.

Must you eat animal protein? No, but one of the problems with avoiding animal protein is that it is quite difficult to obtain enough complete essential amino acids, especially branched chained amino acids to stimulate the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), an important anabolic switch that is activated by about 3 grams of branched chain amino acids.

While there are plants that are high in protein, they’re not identical or even equivalent to animal protein in most cases. Certain micronutrients found in animal foods you simply cannot get from plants. This includes vitamin B12, vitamin A (retinol not beta-carotene), creatine, bioavailable iron, carnitine and carnosine, all of which are important for muscle growth and health in general.

To determine your personal protein requirement, Lyon recommends 1 gram of protein per pound of ideal body weight (the weight you would ideally be, not necessarily the weight you are now). Once you have that number, you can divide it by the number of meals you eat to get your per-meal quota which, for older adults should be around 30 to 50 grams per meal.

For reference, there’s approximately 7 grams of protein in each ounce of steak, so a 5-ounce steak would give you 35 grams of high-quality protein. For children, the average amount per meal is around 5 to 10 grams, while young adults typically can get away with 20 grams per meal.

For most normal-weight adults, 30 grams per meal is really the minimum you need to stimulate muscle protein synthesis. If you have a robust strength training program, you may need to go even higher. To make sure you’re getting enough protein in your meals, consider using Cronometer. That way, you’re not guessing.

Another core lifestyle strategy that will help optimize your health by making you metabolically flexible is time-restricted eating (TRE), a form of intermittent fasting. I believe TRE is best done 16 to 18 hours a day, every day, which is probably the sweet spot to optimize metabolic health if you are insulin resistant or metabolically inflexible.

This schedule will give you virtually all the same benefits as calorie restriction with respect to longevity benefits, but without any of the downsides, the primary one being compliance. However, if you are one of the one in 20 that is not insulin resistant than you don’t want to decrease your eating time to less than 8 hours per day.

Most people eat more or less continuously throughout each day, which will keep mTOR continuously activated. When you’re doing TRE, mTOR gets stimulated only once or twice a day, which is not a problem. mTOR is best activated twice a day in a pulsatile fashion. When you activate it continuously as most people do, it can lead to an increase in risk in diseases like cancer.

I prefer to do my workout in a fasted state, followed by an infrared sauna and swim, and then break my fast afterward. This will reduce the carbohydrate load in the muscles as they’re using up glucose during the workout. This, in turn, gives you the additional benefits of autophagy.

In addition, when muscle contracts, it releases myokines, which play a role in both lipolysis (the breakdown of fat) and glucose utilization, and when you train in a low-glycogen fasted state, myokine release is increased.

Dr. Paul Saladino trained at the University of Arizona with a focus on integrative medicine. He completed his residency in psychiatry at the University of Washington in 2019, and is a certified functional medicine practitioner through the Institute for Functional Medicine.

In this interview, Saladino discusses the surprising benefits of the carnivore diet, which is the topic of his book, “The Carnivore Code,” which is currently available for preorder.

I view him as one of the leading experts on the health benefits of an animal-based diet. Saladino takes it to the extreme, though, advocating a carnivore diet to the exclusion of all vegetables or plant materials, which may strike many as debatable.

The evidence he presents for it, however, is quite compelling. I don’t know anyone personally who has reviewed the literature more carefully and can put together a coherent argument for this strategy. (This is in part a side-effect of having gone through the basic medical sciences twice, as he went through medical school to be a physician’s assistant and later an M.D.)

Saladino is likely to challenge your beliefs in this interview. This is not meant to offend anyone. If you believe you should avoid animal foods for ethical reasons, that’s certainly your choice. If you’re struggling with health issues that a vegetarian diet has not been able to resolve, however, or perhaps even made your condition worse, you may want to listen to what he has to say.

In his book, Saladino states he’s going to bust nutritional dogma, which he does in spades. Saladino, who struggled with asthma and eczema, was actually a vegetarian and then a vegan for a time. It didn’t help. In fact, it made things worse.

His health problems didn’t resolve until he went on an exclusive carnivore diet, and he recounts the various twists and turns in his personal journey at the beginning of the interview. After hearing Jordan Peterson talk about the carnivore diet and how it improved his daughter’s autoimmune symptoms, Saladino was intrigued enough to look into it. The rest, as they say, is history.

“The more I thought about it and dug into it, I started to realize, maybe there’s something to this,” he says. “I’m at least going to try it. And so, the first time I tried it, within a few days, my mood changed, and my outlook on life got to be significantly better and more positive.

I thought, ‘There’s something to this.’ A few weeks later, the eczema had completely resolved and hasn’t come back since. I’ve been eating a carnivore diet for the last year and a half.

But there really was this sort of personal quest throughout to find out what the triggering food was, and it was just so striking for me to see the eczema go away when I cut out all plants — and then the added benefit.

The mental clarity, the psychological benefits were surprising. That kind of hooked me, and I thought, ‘OK. I need to just pour myself into this and understand this because this is going to help a lot of people, or it potentially could.'”

According to Saladino, there’s a clear ancestral history of eating an animal-based diet, which he details in the interview. In a nutshell, the evidence suggests we are descendants of omnivores, and that the increase in brain volume coincides with a transition to hunting for animal game and eating large amounts of animal foods.

Some vegetarian advocates have argued that it was tubers that caused our brains to grow. Saladino disagrees, noting that the levels of nitrogen and carbon in fossilized remains from 60,000 years ago are actually greater than those in hyenas, which suggests our ancestors were eating more animal protein than known carnivores.

He also points out genetic evidence suggesting Homo sapiens were not eating significant amounts of starch, as they developed a salivary amylase mutation.

“What we see now is that all living people on Earth have a salivary amylase duplication because we’re all descended from a Homo sapiens group that left Africa 80,000 years ago that appears to have had an amylase duplication,” Saladino says.

“So, they were eating more tubers 80,000 years ago. But up until that point, there’s no evidence for an amylase duplication, arguing strongly against the notion that we’ve been using tubers for any significant amount of nutrition.”

In the interview, Saladino also goes into the findings of Dr. Weston A. Price, a pioneering dentist who traveled the world to document the diets and health status of indigenous cultures. A big take-home point was that Price never found a culture that was thriving on plant foods alone.

“The other point I highlight in the book is that there were some instances where he could directly compare African tribes that were more plant heavy and tribes that were more animal heavy, and the tribes that ate more animals were stronger, taller and had better health than the tribes that ate more plants.

So, he had a direct comparison looking at the overall health, strength, virility of people in Africa in the 1930s and 1940s, and he saw that people who favored animal foods were doing much better than the people that favored plant foods,” Saladino says.

One of the most controversial issues relates to the health benefits and hazards of phytonutrients, i.e., plant-based nutrients. I was under the belief that phytonutrients were largely responsible for activating profoundly powerful pathways for longevity.

Saladino’s work caused me to seriously reevaluate my views on phytonutrient supplementation. As Saladino explains, phytoalexins are plant defense compounds that may be causing more harm than good. A corollary to this is the issue of xenohormesis, which Saladino covered in a November 5, 2019, podcast interview with David Sinclair, Ph.D.1

“I don’t think anyone debates that plants make defense chemicals,” Saladino says. “I just think we’re not familiar with how pervasive they are, and how many of the plants we eat contain thousands of them …

You could get really sick from the oxalates in rhubarb, for example. We’re aware that some plants are so toxic that they’re frankly poisonous. We could die [if we eat them]. Basically, every plant in nature is part of a delicate balance, a delicate exchange system with other animals.

And [plants have] had to develop plant defense chemicals — phytoalexins. I think the part of this that is so radical and challenges so many of our long-held beliefs … is that so many of the chemicals that we imagine to be phytonutrients or to be hormetics in plants are actually phytoalexins. They’re plant defense chemicals …

If I’m going to suggest a carnivore diet … one of the things that people often question is: What about all the nutrients in plants that I’m missing? And there’s a chapter in the book where I talk about the actual vitamins and minerals [found in animal foods] …

In terms of vitamins and minerals, you can get everything from animals. Animals are a better source of all the vitamins and minerals than plants. But then people say, ‘What about all the polyphenols and these phytonutrients?’ … And this is where we get into the realm of phytoalexins, the plant defense chemicals …

So many of these chemicals that people think of as beneficial are plant defense chemicals. The majority of polyphenols are plant defense chemicals … Resveratrol, for example … is a defense molecule. It’s produced in response to the botrytis fungus … Resveratrol is an oxidative stressor to the fungus organism and does other things negatively for the fungus …

Resveratrol … definitely does activate SIRT1, which appears to be a good thing, but it has other negative effects in the human body. Specifically, there’s a good amount of research on resveratrol suggesting that it affects hormonal metabolism negatively.

It decreases androgen precursor, specifically DHEA, leading to lower levels of DHEA and testosterone and other androgens. Many polyphenols do this in the flavonoid class of molecules … Curcumin is another one.

And I’ll clarify this briefly just so people understand my position. It’s not that I’m saying these molecules have no value in humans. It’s my urging, my suggestion when we’re thinking about these molecules, that we think about them like pharmaceuticals, because they really are.

Pharmaceuticals are really powerful and can be lifesaving molecules. But if I’m going to prescribe or recommend ibuprofen or metoprolol or a psychiatric drug to a patient, I’m always going to have a conversation about the potential side effects.

What we’ve forgotten about with these plant molecules is that they too … have side effects. Those side effects are what I’m calling attention to in ‘The Carnivore Diet.’ I think that for some people, plant molecules can have a medicinal value. But when we’re using them as food, every day, my concern is that we can be getting too much of a medicine and the side effects start to outweigh the benefits.

That is where I think the elimination of them becomes valuable for people, and the cutting out of all the plants can be a game changer in terms of inflammation and autoimmunity.”

In the interview, Saladino also offers a descriptive analogy that helps explain why plant nutrients aren’t necessarily necessary in human biochemistry. The biochemical difference between plants and animals can be likened to the operating systems of PC and Mac. While their apparent functions are the same, their operating systems are different and incompatible.

Your body has its own antioxidant system, which is different from that of plants. Your immune system is your primary defense, and you have innate and adaptive immunity. Plants do not have that. They only make molecules to defend against invaders.

The common belief is that plant molecules act as antioxidants in humans, but according to Saladino, plant molecules do not act as direct free radical scavengers in our body. They can trigger your antioxidant response system, however, which is hormesis.

“We have glutathione, we have the enzyme, superoxide dismutase, we have uric acid, we have vitamin E. We have molecules that do the free radical scavenging the human body,” Saladino says.

“What we’re talking about here is the movement of electrons … Unpaired electrons are free radicals. They run around the body and pull electrons off other molecules … We have our cellular police force at glutathione to go and say, ‘Hey, I’m going to give you an electron so you can calm down.’ That’s what glutathione does. That’s our antioxidant system.

Plants don’t do that. Plant molecules do not come into us and donate electrons. They’re the reverse. Because they’re plant defense molecules, they’re pro-oxidants. Plants and animals have different operating systems and the molecules don’t act in the same ways. The same is true of the vitamins and minerals in plants versus the vitamins and minerals in animals.”

Sinclair, a professor of genetics at Harvard whom I have previously interviewed, and others have advanced the concept of xenohormesis, which means molecules that are outside of us are good for us because they contain tiny amounts of poison.

Saladino’s problem with that theory has to do with the side effects. In the interview, he illustrates his objection using the example of sulforaphane, the primary glucosinolate in broccoli.

When an enzyme called myrosinase degrades glucoraphanin, it becomes sulforaphane, which acts as a pro-oxidant, not an antioxidant. By acting as a pro-oxidant, it triggers the antioxidant response system — the Nrf2 pathway. NRF2 is transcription factor that controls the activation and deactivation of genes.

It will activate genes such as glutathione peroxidase, involved in the antioxidant system. When NRF2 rises, glutathione rises, which is a good thing in the short term, as it decreases DNA damage. However, there is collateral damage.

“The side effects of this molecule are what people are missing,” Saladino says. “We don’t need sulforaphane to protect our DNA. We don’t need sulforaphane to have optimal antioxidant status.

We can do things like heat exposure and cold exposure and exercise, which can also turn on the antioxidant response system and increase our supply of glutathione and protect our DNA.

They don’t have any [deleterious] side effects. But sulforaphane has side effects … [When] sulforaphane circulates in your body, it can oxidize membranes of cells and create 4-HNE (4-Hydroxynonenal) [and] acrolein, which are products of oxidation.

These are lipid peroxides, which can be very damaging. It also interferes with the absorption of iodine and competes with iodine at the level of the thyroid … So xenohormesis, for me, the concept falls apart because of the side effects. We don’t need these things. There are no examples of plant molecules that I have seen.

Again, we’re all learning, but I am not convinced the plant molecules provide any net benefit. They don’t let us do anything we can’t otherwise do … and they have all the side effects which kind of drag us down.”

According to Saladino, animal foods are uniquely healthy for humans, and this is a topic he covers in great depth in chapter 8 of his book. One example is vitamin B12. Research cited in the book shows that B12 levels appear to be related to brain size, with low vitamin B12 equating to smaller brain volume.

“We know the brain size has been declining over the last 15,000 years,” Saladino says. “Certainly, when humans stopped hunting, they started farming more. Their B12 and many other nutrients went way down. And that’s a compelling hypothesis for this decline in brain size …

[B12] is critically important in the folate cycle. It’s needed to convert homocysteine to methionine and it’s needed to make succinyl-CoA for the Krebs cycle. It’s needed for all growth in our neurons. It’s really important.”

Saladino also covers “the three C’s,” which are entirely or close to entirely lacking in plant foods:

  • Creatine — Creatine, found only in animal food, not plants, is part of the phosphagen system in your muscles. It stores a phosphate item as creatine phosphate and donates that phosphate to ATP when it gets used up during intense exercise. It’s also part of your body’s energy metabolism.

“There are incredibly striking studies that I talk about in the book where vegetarians and vegans were supplemented with 5 grams of creatine per day, which is the amount of creatine in 1 pound of meat; invariably they had improvements in working memory, intelligence, decision-making tasks,” Saladino says.

  • Choline — Choline is important for the membranes of every cell in your body. It’s also been shown to protect against nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

  • Carnosine — Carnosine is important because of its ability to limit oxidative stress by preventing the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and advanced lipoxidation end products (ALEs), both of which correlate to aging in humans.

Carnosine is not present in plant foods, and in his book Saladino cites research showing vegetarians have higher levels of AGE formation in their bodies. There appear to be dozens of clinical conditions for which carnosine is useful.

This includes heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s. It’s also a precursor for histamine, and mitigates damage caused by ALEs, which are even more destructive than AGEs, and helps combat mitochondrial dysfunction, which is at the heart of aging and chronic disease.

Animal foods are also a good source of retinol vitamin A, which is better absorbed than beta carotene from plants, which must be converted into retinol. Many lack the enzyme required for this conversion, which means they cannot break down the beta carotene to make the active form of vitamin A.

“Again, this is the operating systems concept. Retinol vitamin A is not found in plants but is exclusively found in animals. Egg yolks and liver are very rich sources. We have to eat 20 times more beta carotene to get the equivalent biological value of a molecule of retinol.

To get the right amount of vitamin A, you have to eat something like close to a pound of sweet potatoes a day. And if you ate 3 pounds of broccoli earlier today to get your choline requirement, I don’t know how you’re going to eat another pound of sweet potatoes.

Sweet potatoes are also very high in oxalates, so it’s very misleading when people say you can get all the vitamin A you need from beta carotene. It’s pretty hard to actually … So, we have to get it from animal foods …”

Vitamin K is another example. Vitamin K1 is primarily found in plants while K2 — which seems to provide most of the benefits — is found in animal foods and fermented foods.

As noted by Saladino, research shows a clear correlation between higher K2 levels and lower incidence of cardiovascular disease. No such correlation exists for vitamin K1. Unfortunately, most nutrition calculators look only at K1, which is why many are under the mistaken belief that there is no vitamin K in animal foods.

“Any nutritionists or anyone that tells you there’s not enough vitamin K in animal foods is 100% wrong,” Saladino says, “because there’s actually more of the good type of vitamin K [i.e., vitamin K2] in animal foods that we can’t get other places.”

The same goes for vitamins E and C. Neither is properly measured in animal foods, thus leading to the mistaken belief that you need plant foods for these nutrients. However, Saladino presents ample evidence in his book showing meat and animal foods contain sufficient amounts of both vitamin E and C.

Importantly, Saladino has performed extensive blood testing on himself and others who are on an exclusive carnivore diet, showing consistently good results and no adverse biochemical consequences. He explains:

“We’ve looked at a lot of stuff. There’s individual variation. But I was just looking at one of my clients yesterday who was on a carnivore diet for months.

Her hs-CRP is 0.3. The F2-isoprostanes were very low, which is a marker of oxidative stress. There’s no evidence for DNA damage with 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine, et cetera. They’re incredibly insulin sensitive. There’s no damage to the kidneys. BUN is usually normal if people are getting adequate sodium … There’s no impairment in [blood] clotting.”

Another important side note relates to meal timing. If you’re eating a carnivore diet 18 hours a day, you’re probably going to run into problems — just as with any other diet. Saladino covers the importance of time-restricted eating in his book as well.

In the interview, Saladino also covers the common perception that fiber and plant foods are essential for a healthy microbiome, and the prevention of constipation and cancer. This being an unusually long interview, I cannot cover all the details in this article so, for more in-depth information, please listen to the interview in its entirety.

With regard to fiber and microbial diversity, Harvard researchers demonstrated that people eating an exclusive carnivore diet have the same alpha diversity of gut microbes as those eating an exclusive plant-based diet for one week. In fact, the carnivore diet increased beta diversity, which is another measure of diversity, so total diversity actually increased.

While the carnivore diet may benefit anyone, it appears particularly useful for those with autoimmune diseases.

“I can’t even tell you how many cases of psoriatic arthritis I’ve seen go away from it,” Saladino says. “There are multiple stories on my Instagram. I’ve posted lots of testimonials from people who had bad plaque psoriasis, fibromyalgia, eczema, asthma and lupus …

I can’t claim that the carnivore diet cures 100% of people, but it’s a really powerful intervention. I think for some people, there’s other things going on, GI dysbiosis or gut infections or heavy metal toxicity. Who knows? But it’s a pretty darn effective intervention.

Generally, this is what the book is about: ‘Hey, look, plants have toxins. Eating animal foods is safe. Don’t fear them. If you’re sick, if you’re not kicking as much bud as you want to, then try the carnivore diet, especially if you have an autoimmune disease.’

It’s incredible. I mean it totally resolved my autoimmune disease and I’ve seen it happen for people over and over and over. It’s pretty cool. I think it’s going to change medicine.”

Saladino even dispels the idea that plant-based diets are what makes Blue Zones, areas where people are known to be particularly long-lived, stand out. Blue Zones include Ikaria in Greece, Sardinia in Italy, Loma Linda in California, Okinawa, Japan and the Nicoya region of Costa Rica.

Crazy enough, these areas actually have the third highest consumption of meat per capita in the world, Saladino says. And they have the longest life expectancy. In the interview, Saladino delves into the specifics of each of these five areas, reviewing the local diets which, contrary to popular belief, are heavy on meat and animal foods.

“Probably the most interesting one is Loma Linda. There’s a big Seventh Day Adventist population there. Within the Seventh Day Adventist’s population, there are a number of things that are advocated for. They suggest avoidance of smoking and drinking, and they don’t believe in eating meat …

They believe that meat creates carnal desires in humans, which is probably true because it allows us to have healthy hormone levels, right? … They believe that if we eat a vegetarian diet, it will control our carnal desires, which it probably will because our hormones will tank in a negative way.

The Seventh Day Adventist region of California is a zone of longevity. They live about 7.3 years longer than the average Californian. But what’s so interesting is that the California Mormons also live seven-ish years longer than the general population, but they don’t shun meat at all.

So it’s probably not the shunning of meat … that’s leading to longevity. In the case of Loma Linda and the Mormons, what they have in common is that they don’t smoke, they don’t drink and they have a tight community. And that will be our takeaway from the blue zones eventually.”

Saladino also goes into more detail about healthy user bias and the problem with epidemiological studies (which are observational, not interventional, and therefore cannot determine causation), both of which have contributed to the belief system that plant-based diets are better than meat-based ones.

“There’s a great website that I referenced in the book, called spuriouscorrelations.com. I would encourage people to go to that website,” Saladino says.

“[It shows there’s] a very strong correlation between cheese consumption and death by getting tangled in the bed sheets and things like this … It’s just so silly. You can make correlations between anything that don’t have a causal relationship …

What we’re probably seeing is that people who eat more fruits and vegetables are also doing other healthy behaviors. And this is the takeaway from the Blue Zones too. People in Loma Linda live longer because they don’t smoke or drink. The Mormons live longer because they don’t smoke or drink.

The people who can do the exercise, be in the sun — those are healthy behaviors that are going to create longevity. But when it comes to diet, we really can’t tell because that’s a very complicated thing.

There’s one study in the book that really drives this point home. It’s called the UK Shoppers Study. They compared the standard mortality ratio of vegetarians to the general population. And the vegetarians live longer.

But then they compare the death rate of vegetarians to other people in the population who ate meat. They were omnivores, but these people did healthy behaviors. So, they were actually able to compare two groups of people who listen to health advice and do healthy behaviors, and they had equivalent death rates.

So it’s probably not the exclusion of meat that’s causing these health outcomes to look good. It’s the other things they do. This is healthy user bias …

So what do we do? We generate a hypothesis. We go back and we test the hypothesis. It’s just very hard to test that hypothesis because how do you do a study long enough where you’re giving some people more fruits and vegetables?

So, what has been done is a series of five studies that I talk about in the book where fruits and vegetables were removed from the diet. This is an interventional study … The other group ate like a pound and a half of vegetables a day … At the end of four weeks they looked at oxidative stress, inflammatory markers and markers of immune activation.

What did they see? They were completely the same between the two groups. Meaning that when we remove fruit and vegetables (these are fruit and vegetable depletion studies), there is no detriment. There’s no change. There’s no benefit to having them in there.”

I’ve only covered a portion of what we discuss in this interview, so if any of this has piqued your curiosity, please listen to the interview in its entirety. Saladino delves into many details that have not been covered in this text, including:

  • The issue of cholesterol

  • The impact of the carnivore diet on insulin sensitivity and heart disease

  • Why you don’t need to worry about excessive mTOR activation

He also discusses the importance of nose-to-tail eating as radically exemplified by Glenn Villeneuve of Life Below Zero in his recent 3.5-hour interview2 with Joe Rogan. A carnivore diet is not just eating steak. You should eat the whole animal. This includes animal fats, organ meats and collagen from bone and marrow, for example.

It’s also important to make sure the food is from grass fed and grass finished animals, opposed to factory farmed, as their diet differs tremendously, which in turn affects the nutrition you get from it.

A carnivore diet also is not exclusive to bovines. You can include seafood, eggs, chicken, turkey, pork and dairy, including goat and sheep milk. If you cannot stomach the idea of organ meats, there are ancestral supplements that contain freeze dried organ components.

“In terms of basic macros [macro nutrients], people can go to my website, carnivoremd.com. I’ve got a carnivore diet pyramid there which has a lot of this laid out that you can download. What I recommend for people is thinking about how much protein you want to get in a day.

We may differ a little bit on these recommendations. I generally recommend 0.8 to 1 gram of protein per pound of lean body weight, and then a reasonable amount of fat to go with that. Then some organ meats and eggs and a lot of salt.

I think it’s important to get a lot of good salt so the electrolytes don’t get out of whack. I go into detail about all of that in the book, in chapter 12 and chapter 13, and I’ve got meal plans and everything in there.

I recommend that people avoid [plant-based fats] when they’re doing a carnivore diet because of something called oleosins. Even in oil, we can find proteins that can be immunogenic. People could reintroduce these just like they would an elimination diet later.

But if you really want to see how your body does with no plant compounds at all, [then] you want to get rid of the all the plant oils because of oleosins … I really believe that animal fat is more nutritious in general for people.”

To get all the information Saladino discusses in this interview, and then some, be sure to pick up a copy of “The Carnivore Code.”

After 13 years with Evernote, I’m done

This is off my usual vaccine topic, but I’m sure there are lots of my readers who share my frustrations with Evernote.

The sync errors that have lasted 13 years and never been fixed are part of it. And when your notes have conflicts, they do NOTHING to help you resolve the conflicts.

Whenever I use the mobile app, I have to force quit the app and restart it to get it to sync. This should never be needed.

There was a time when Evernote was using a huge amount of background CPU doing nothing and when I complained the “experts” on the Community told me I don’t understand how modern software works. When you try to export your notebooks, you have to do it ONE AT A TIME. Are you kidding me?!?!

I would have left Evernote sooner if I had a way to export my files.

Recently I got so frustrated with yet another, “you have two notes with the same name” problem that I said I was done. I would find a better way and I would find a way to export my files intact.

I spent days on this and I found a solution that:

  1. can be used off-line and on-line

  2. is very flexible/powerful

  3. has WYSIWYG editing

  4. syncs notes on platforms as you type (like Google docs)

  5. never gives you conflict errors

  6. is very cheap

  7. is highly rated by experts

  8. Is easy to use

  9. Is a decision that I will never regret

It’s not Evernote and it’s not Notion (which doesn’t really work off-line which was the deal killer for me). It’s a product I’ve never heard of in my life until just a few days ago when I started researching all the alternatives.

As a special gift to my paying subscribers, I will explain what I switched to and how I was able to migrate all my Evernote notes without loss of any information. If you aren’t already a paying subscriber, you can subscribe for $5/mo or $50/yr and cancel at any time.

Public Letter to the Society of Jesus

 By Anna Von Reitz

You have been over-run from within.  Pope Francis, as a Jesuit, cannot give his ultimate allegiance to himself, except as Satan gives his ultimate allegiance only to himself. This is what the ego and the separation and the conflict of consciousness has always been about.
The logic of this is inexorable and unavoidable. And so are the apparent results.
Earth is the Garden of Heaven, and we are separated from it by The World.
Francis, caught in this existential conundrum, can only deceive, and the deceit results in fraud, which results in nullification and paralysis.
The Church cannot protect herself under such a circumstance and no man can serve two Masters.
Pope Benedict XVI gave the Seal of Saint Peter and the Keys to the Storehouse of the Lord to James Thomas McBride, and instructed him as the Regional PostMaster for North America, to open the storehouses for the comfort and survival of the living people.
James Thomas McBride did this to the best of his ability, but he was attacked by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) —another out of control private-for-profit corporation calling itself an “Agency” and being misdirected by unelected businessmen and hired bureaucrats.
They stole the Seal of Saint Peter.
They threw James Thomas McBride in jail.
They laughed at him and they prosecuted McBride, just as the Sanhedrin prosecuted Jesus on False Charges, and it is their fault that the Storehouse of the Lord is being plundered by evil men and commandeered for the use of evil.
We have reason to believe that the FBI is under the control of the Swiss Octagon Group and that the Seal of Saint Peter has been transferred to the Bank for International Settlements for use as a rubber stamp to okay the abuse of gold and other assets belonging to the Church and to living people who are the lawful heirs of these assets.
The Father of All Lies has simply lied about them and claimed that they voluntarily “waived their estates” so as to form unconscionable infant decedent estates while they were themselves still babies in their cradles.
This cruel subversion of trust and truth is the foundation that Satan would have the “New World” build itself upon.
So now you find the Church attacked on all sides, and even worse, you find that there is factual evidence that some of these attacks are justified.
Corruption of the Church’s administration has occurred and even the Pope’s Office has been twisted around out of all recognition or sense.
Francis Bergoglio was a chemist. He knew the Carbon Cycle.  There would be no plausible excuse for ignorance on his part, leading him to support the New Green Deal.  The only green on the table is USD and a new taxation scheme designed to inflict more senseless suffering on the people.
This, when Pope Benedict XVI has already directed that the people must be comforted and sustained, and ordered the opening of the Storehouse of the Lord?
It is your apparent duty to deal with the FBI and the Octagon Group and the Swiss Government and the Vatican Administration, and yes, with
Pope Francis, too, while the College of Cardinals and the Roman Curia must deal with the consequences of both their actions and inactions.
We, the international government of The United States, have asked for the dissolution and liquidation of numerous offending corporations, which have deeply indulged in unaccountable and horrific unlawful profiteering, resulting in the death, maiming, and misery of millions of innocent people.
The offending corporations have done this to profit themselves from sales of their products and services, and to advance a scandalous redefinition of living people as Genetically Modified Organisms, which these offending corporations claim to own as property via patents held on their genetically engineered bioweapon — a scrap of mRNA and adjunct agents disguised as a “vaccine”.
The presence and action of the Father of All Lies is apparent in all of this.
The Municipal Government of the United States acting as a parent corporation has participated in this genocide for a share of the profit and to save itself the cost of pensions and services owed to elderly retirees, and at the end of the day, all this is coming back on the Church and the Roman Curia.
As Defenders of the Church and of the Faith, you have no choice but to act and to act decisively in favor of Life and Truth, and to bring a swift and just end to the crimes and corporations responsible.

International Public Notice of Fraud and Treason

 By Anna Von Reitz

International Public Notice of Fraud and Treason

Issued 24th December 2022

We have now fully identified the circumstance under which this country has been operating for six generations.

In 1865 so-called “Carpetbagger Courts” were established along with ten new “Military Districts” overlaying eleven Southern States.

We know that these “Military Districts” have been expanded throughout The United States and used for nefarious purposes to misaddress the General Public under conditions of deliberate fraud, so as to promote racketeering and illegal confiscation of private property under False Pretenses ever since.

The continued occupation of our country by our own bought and paid for military, organized as a foreign mercenary force and acting under these spurious pretensions—- is a national and international scandal. So is the similar illegal occupation of most of western Europe and the former British Commonwealth under the same conditions of deceit and crime.

The Perpetrators found a way to use courts as Collection Agencies, and they have used these phony “executive courts” to promote illegal confiscation of private property for the benefit of the Occupation forces and their British Territorial Bosses — all based on an illegal Mercenary Conflict (aka “American Civil War”) that ended over 150 years ago.

The Vermin got away with it and have continued to get away with it, primarily because the people of this country have been asleep and ignorant concerning the nature of, and lack of authority of, the courts being used to perpetuate this scheme.

They have also been kept ignorant of the fact that the members of the Bar Association are part of the British King’s “civilian militia”.

There are, typically, only four kinds of courts in operation in this country at this time: the above-mentioned military district courts, administrative courts which are supposed to be limited to addressing government employees, maritime courts concerned with commercial business contracts, and Admiralty Courts concerned with acts of war and mayhem and rescue on the High Seas and  Navigable Inland Waterways.

The people making up the General Public and populace of this country are not, customarily or in practice, supposed to be addressed by any these courts described above, because: (1) we aren’t combatants in any  war; (2) we aren’t government corporation employees; (3) we aren’t incorporated entities; (4) we aren’t on the High Seas or Navigable Inland Waterways.

The military maintaining the fraudulent and illegal occupation of our country, has used the quasi-military Civil War-Era Carpet-Bagger court system to promote illegal confiscation of private property.  This court system seeks to maintain itself as an “executive court” permitted by their Commander-in-Chief, who is not occupying the American Government Office.  He is simply the Chief Executive of a commercial services corporation in the business of providing us with “defense services”—-and doing a damned poor job of it.

You will note that the first assault against  life and liberty and property rights is always addressed to a Municipal CORPORATION owned and operated by the British Crown, that is, to a CORPORATION which is merely named after living Americans without their knowledge or consensual agreement.

You will also note from reading the attached articles that this PERSON is addressed under Maritime Law and that you contract with the foreign maritime court by entering their “ship” and thereby accepting their flag.

Until very recently these courts were all flying an “Executive Flag” never adopted by or approved by any United States or American Congress.  This gold-fringed monstrosity known merely as the “National Colors” was being flown in all these foreign quasi-military courts as purported Fair Notice to the Public of what was being done to subvert justice in this country.

Every US, INC. and USA, Inc. corporation “President” since 1925 has allowed and promoted this treason and abuse against their Employers, the people of this country, as these commercial corporations have continued to wage war— economic war — against the peaceful and clueless General Public.

This has all been done by the British Government and the British Crown in collusion with the Municipal Government of Washington, DC, and it has all been prosecuted based on the “Fourteenth [By-Law] Amendment” to the USA Corporation’s 1868 charter, deceptively called “The Constitution for the United States of America” —- Incorporated, that is — adopted by the British Territorial District of Columbia Citizenry in 1868.

Not us. Them.

The 1868 Corporation went bankrupt in 1907 and has been defunct for over a hundred years, yet millions of Americans have been prosecuted under the “authority” of this corporate drivel and deceit.

Our war flag, the flag of the united States adopted as shown in Revised United States Statutes-at-Large 1791, 1792, has the same general appearance as the British Territorial war flag described under their Federal Title IV, Sections 1 and 2.

The Title IV Flag was described and set apart as a specific proportional representation of our flag for the use of our British Territorial Subcontractors when they exercise our delegated powers under their specific Constitution.

Thus, you will see that our American flag is denoted as “the flag of the united States” with a small “u” on the word “united” throughout, and the British Territorial flag is described as the “the flag of the United States” — meaning the Title IV Flag, with a capital “U” on the word “United” throughout.

There are two actual flags denoting different authorities, one representing the American Government, the other representing the British Territorial Government acting under contract to exercise our delegated authority under The Constitution of the United States of America.

Without us, they don’t have a flag, and without us, they don’t have any land or soil, either.  They are simply what their actions show that they are— criminals without a flag and without a country. As a result, their obedience to their service contracts and use permits is an obligatory and unavoidable condition for their continued political existence and all Principals responsible for this Mess are hereby fully informed.

Notice to Agents is Notice to Principals; Notice to Principals is Notice to Agents.

The British Territorial Officers responsible for this gross misadministration and criminal Breach of Trust are the United States Secretary of State and his franchise counterparts the State-of-State Secretaries of State stationed in and “residing” in each of our States of the Union.

They are joined in the Rogues Gallery of criminal malfeasance by the United States Attorney Generals and Inspector Generals of the United States.  All these Officers acting under the Naval Agency and Distribution Act of the British Parliament have committed both fraud and treason against their loyal Employers, the American People, for the better part of 150 years.

These Undeclared Foreign Agents  have gotten away with pillaging, illegal confiscation, impersonation, inland piracy, conspiracy against the Constitutions, kidnapping, unlawful conversion and worse —with no consequence, simply because they kept their mouths shut and embarked on their rampage under cover of a “cloak of secrecy” and non-disclosure, preying upon their trusting Employers like so many wolves in sheep’s clothing.

And now, this circumstance must come to an end and our liens against the American Bar Association and the International Bar Association and the Principals responsible for their charters are in effect.

The Legal Presumptions created by their corporate Fourteenth [By-Law] Amendment are hereby Noticed as Error and long overturned by bankruptcy.

Every Bar Attorney is operating as an “Esquire” — a member of the British King’s “civilian militia”,  and is an Undeclared Foreign Agent; the vast majority of them are in violation of the Foreign Agent Registration Act, having no right or reason to address any member of the American General Public.

All military officers holding commissions in the United States Armed Forces and all those holding commissions in the American Armed Forces are hereby forewarned, held liable, and placed under Supreme Command to take action and bring a prompt, equitable, and peaceful end to the aforementioned trespasses of these courts, their Undeclared Foreign Agents, the abuses of our flags and of their own foreign corporation offices to promote fraud and illegal acts against the General Public of this country.

This circumstance is well-within the meaning of protecting us and our property against “all Enemies, both foreign and domestic.”

The United States Secretary of State and his State-of-State Secretary of State counterparts are similarly acting in foreign and undisclosed capacities and are failing to recognize the political standing of average Americans and they are thereby allowing and promoting Crimes of State against our people and our country as a whole.

This entire Mess must be cleaned up with no further attacks or presumptions of any form of “war” seeking to validate them.

The American People have been at peace since 1814.  We are at peace now and we are flying our peacetime flag.  No other Legal Presumptions against us may be entertained by any Office or Officer of any level of the Federal Government or their associated State-of-State franchises.

Any corporation caught being engaged in or promoting unlawful activities will be summarily liquidated under the Public Law or otherwise liquidated by the responsible foreign Principals.

All Admiralty Courts are hereby provided with Notice of Fraud and Piracy.

All Admiralty Court Officers including the JAG Officers currently occupying the Provost Marshal’s Office are empowered and instructed to arrest and prosecute members of the Bar Association caught operating unauthorized courts on our soil, impersonating Americans, and pillaging Public Trusts.

All Bar Association Members are required to register as Foreign Agents, including those that are active in State-of-State franchise capacities and running enfranchised County Courts, as all of these are merely local franchises of the parent Federal Corporations.

Counselors of Law operating or serving Article III Courts are not subject to registration.

The above circumstances present very serious issues of public mis-administration and corruption in this country and throughout many other countries worldwide.

Any individual or corporation supporting or promoting or further tolerating the presumptions and practices described above, is a criminal by definition, acting in violation of the Treaties owed to Americans and against the Constitutions implementing them.

Whereupon we establish this International Public Notice of Fraud and Treason and present it to The Department of the Federal Treasury within the Bank for International Settlements and to the other people and governments and corporations throughout the world for the purpose of establishing ownership and liability related to our assets and contracts.

We object to our assets being used for the purpose of illegal commercial warring against us or any other people.

We object to the continued false Legal Pretenses seeking to deprive us of our assets and control of our assets based on meaningless, unauthorized, non-consensual and unconscionable implied contracting processes.

We object to any claim that we are not now present and accounted for among the living governments and corporate Principals of the world.

We object to any claim that our assets, individual, national, or corporate, have been abandoned.

We object to any misuse of the endowment of Saint Germain granted to this country in the name of our unincorporated Federation of States,  for purposes of immorality, war, crime, continued deceit, or pay-offs to incompetent and crooked international banks.

We object to any misuse or abuse of our military, our sons and daughters, who have been conscripted and who have contracted to serve under conditions of non-disclosure and purposeful deceit.

We object to any use of our military for criminal purposes, for occupation of our land and soil, or for long-term occupation of any other countries’ land and soil.  As our service contracts make clear, our military exists for the defense of our country, including our international borders, and no other purpose at all.

We object to any lying, cheating, thieving, or coercion that our Federal Subcontractors have employed “in our names” to disadvantage other countries, undermine their political processes, or damage their economies.

We object to any presumption by the Popes or the British King that we are in “interregnum” or “absent” simply because we have not called our States into Session for a long time.

The American People have properly identified their provenance and exercised their political birthrights and reclaimed all reversionary trust interest in their individual estates; they have recorded their identities and political status on the Public Record and brought forward their republican state assemblies and have herein and also otherwise served Notice on the United States Secretary of State and the United States Attorney General and the Inspector General of the United States, of these facts.

No Agency including the Department of Justice nor the Department of the Federal Treasury within the Bank of International Settlements has any authority or ability to gainsay our authority as the American Government operating our States of the Union as our unincorporated Federation of States doing business as The United States of America in international jurisdiction.  We, not they, hold the authority to act on behalf of this country in international jurisdiction and we, not they, retain all interest in the land and sea assets of this country. No separation of the formerly delegated powers can be presumed, as all such powers have returned to us by Operation of Law, upon the dissolution and/or incompetence of the former Federal Republic and Confederation of States.

We object to all international Agents, Agencies, and Trustees presuming to act on our behalf or on the behalf of other Americans, without any credible fully disclosed authorization from us and our States of the Union.

Merry Christmas! Santa is The First Conspiracy (of the nice kind) Kids Encounter

Merry Christmas, my dear readers. Stay healthy and successful in the new year!

I enjoyed your company tremendously. I hope that we will not run out of things to discuss. Thank you for your Christmas presents to me (subscriptions from the post yesterday). I am very grateful to each of you who subscribed to the paid version — even if for just a month – and I hope to write something that will interest you next year. I am grateful for everyone’s company here.

Christmas is when families get together and celebrate being close to each other. Kids anxiously await presents. Even the official agency of the US Department of Defense, NORAD, is tracking Santa in real-time.

Tomorrow morning, the kids will wake up relieved that Santa has made it to their home through the chimney and left presents for them! Kids are excited that their letters to Santa were acted upon, and the parents are taking pictures and smiling at each other knowingly.

It is a good custom in every way!

My family, even though both of us parents originally came from a country where Santa Claus was called Grandfather Frost and showed up on New Year, had our kids born in the USA, and always had Santa visit us on Christmas.

One year, I remember asking my older son quietly, “what do you know about Santa.” “Santa is fake,” was his answer.

I told him nicely to keep his mouth shut and not tell the younger son. When doubts surfaced in the younger one, I remember telling both that Santa only brings presents to those who believe in Santa.

That kept the game going for a few more years, which brought us many happy moments. Letters to Santa were written, with make and model numbers of things desired, etc. We, the parents, passed the letters to Santa and the kids received the requested goods. Did my children sincerely believe in Santa when making those requests, or just pretended to believe? Every year, it seemed more and more like they were pretending.

That was quite some years ago, but last year I started having second thoughts about this whole thing. Is there some hidden cultural element here that needs to be explored?

  1. Adults pretend that something exists that does not exist.

  2. The industry makes plenty of money.

  3. Kids are taught to pretend to believe in Santa to receive presents.

  4. Everybody is happy.

The third point is very important. As adults, many of us pretend to believe in things or values we do not necessarily believe in: to receive job promotions, be admitted to certain inside groups, etc. If pretending to believe is too painful, we at least keep our mouths shut and let other people signal their virtue.

It is much easier for grownups to do that if we were taught to do so in childhood.

Humans are social. We cannot coexist peacefully if we express every thought at every moment or never pretend to believe in something to get along, and so on. I get it. At what age did we learn these social graces in the first place? Quite early! What helped many of us learn these social ropes is showing belief in Santa and receiving presents for displaying such belief.

Adults, together with the industry, pretending that Santa is real, display the element of group pretense inherent in conspiracies. The kids, after a certain age, pretend to believe in Santa to receive rewards. Many winks and nods are exchanged, especially in families with kids of different ages.

We are taught that conspiracies must be sinister. Some are. However, the perpetrators of conspiracies usually think of themselves as the good guys and consider their pretenses necessary to achieve important goals and save humanity from something. The Santa conspiracy is very nice and healthful, but it also involves a secret agreement of adults to tell kids something that is not exactly true.

Santa is always the first conspiracy (the pleasant kind) kids encounter. It is, fortunately, a very loving and healthy custom that harms nobody. Still, it also teaches kids to go along with conspiracies peacefully, show “pretend belief” in Santa past the age of doubt, and receive presents in exchange for such pretenses.

The “Santa conspiracy” is also good for those kids who will grow up as skeptics and critical thinkers. Their early experience teaches them that just because all adults keep saying that “Santa is real” does not make Santa real.

Children learn that things that do not make sense, such as the idea that Santa would know the desired toy’s make and model number for all kids of the world, are not necessarily true simply because all adults say so. So, the Santa experience is especially useful for forming future critical thinkers.

I hope to have grandkids someday. If that happens, I would gladly contribute to making their winter days happier and will talk about Santa, and would secretly bring wrapped presents, track Santa via NORAD with them, and so on. And yet, we need to understand that this custom has a lot of social implications for children growing up to be adults:

  • It conditions people to function in a society where pretending to believe in something is a crucial part of fitting in.

  • It teaches us that just because everyone keeps saying “XXX is real” does not make it real.

Christmas is also a way for good families to celebrate being families and enjoy being together.

What do you think?

Merry Christmas!
