Testing on baby teeth has showed that children with autism had higher levels of lead, and lower levels of nutrients zinc and manganese. Researchers were able to determine that the differences in metal uptake were most notable during the months just before and after the children were born, indicating heavy metal toxicity began in the womb. “We think autism begins very early, most likely in the womb, and research suggests that our environment can increase a child’s risk. A study of 100 children in Egypt showed that children with autism tested significantly higher for lead, mercury and aluminum compared to controls.
