New York to Track Residents’ Food Purchases and Place “Caps on Meat” Served by Public Institutions

Activist Post | May 17, 2023

New York City will begin tracking the carbon footprint of household food consumption and putting caps on how much red meat can be served in public institutions as part of a sweeping initiative to achieve a 33% reduction in carbon emissions from food by 2030.

Mayor Eric Adams and representatives from the Mayor’s Office of Food Policy and Mayor’s Office of Climate & Environmental Justice announced the new programs last month at a Brooklyn culinary center run by NYC Health + Hospitals, the city’s public healthcare system, just before Earth Day.

At the event, the Mayor’s Office -f Climate & Environmental Justice shared a new chart to be included in the city’s annual greenhouse gas inventory that publicly tracks the carbon footprint created by household food consumption, the Gothamist reported.

The city already produced emissions data from energy use, transportation and waste as part of the annual inventory. But the addition of household food consumption data is part of a partnership that London and New York launched with American Express, C40 Cities and EcoData lab, Commissioner Rohit Aggarwala from the NYC Department of Environmental Protection announced at the event.

Aggarwala — who founded Google smart city subsidiary Sidewalk Labs — celebrated the expanded data collection as forging “a new standard for what cities have to do” and a new way to shape policy.

Top 7 ways the gender-fluid liberals and cancel culture enthusiasts are wrecking the moral fiber of our youth

Image: Top 7 ways the gender-fluid liberals and cancel culture enthusiasts are wrecking the moral fiber of our youth

(Natural News) The total number of registered sex offenders in the USA is climbing fast. Currently, there are more than three-quarters of a million Americans who are listed on states’ sex offender registries, and with the Democrats keeping the southern border wide open for illegal immigrants, expect that number to skyrocket. Plus, Democrats and most liberals push for total acceptance of gay, tranny and gender “fluidity” promotions (and flaunting of it all) in all daycare centers, elementary schools, middle schools, high schools and even college. Anyone who opposes pushing gender-bender surgery and hormone-therapy drugs on kids and teens is considered by these liberals as “racists” and “bigots” and aggressive people who don’t “tolerate” differences.

According to the cancel culture movement, if a person doesn’t focus on sex, sexual partners and sexual identity 24/7/365, then they are intolerant to the “new norm,” and so they get banned and barred from social media platforms, and some people even get fired from their jobs for opposing it. It’s all propaganda that perverts the mind and scars the body, sometimes permanently, to the extent that the gender transitioning person suffers anxiety and depression, and considers suicide (and/or mass homicide).

Child abuse in America has risen to epidemic levels

Did you know that only about 1 in 10 children who are sexually abused ever let anyone know about it? While the tranny men do strip tease shows (in their thongs and fake boobs) for little kids at daycare centers and library book reading “clubs” (pun intended), the children are being exposed to adults who want them to be promiscuous (gay-curious) from as early as the toddler stage.

Brighteon.TV

As more illegal immigrants, especially young men, cross the border into America, there will be more and more human trafficking, including of children, who mostly get abused, molested, raped, sold and sometimes killed. Many will never report it, for fear of consequences, shame and guilt, fear of not being believed, or fear of burdening the family.

Then there are the “groomers.” Grooming is when sex offenders and sexual predators draw children into sexual relationships and situations by developing and/or maintaining this perverted relationship in secrecy. Grooming is becoming more “acceptable” among Democrats and Liberals, as they bring their own children to tranny strip tease shows disguised as equal rights demonstrations or “Drag Queen Story Hour.”

Many of these perverts do not have any interest in religion, ethics, morals, or even the law as it applies to protecting children from sexual predators. That’s why among the gender fluid masses it’s common to be atheist or a worshipper of Satan. These cults are often also grooming children to be queer and perverted, thinking only of sex, sexual partners and sexuality all day, like them.

The moral fiber of this country is being decayed by this cancel culture, Satan-worshipping crowd of misfits and gender-confused zombies. They have multiple victims (usually kids they know), and they continue the abusive cycle until they are arrested, reported, imprisoned, or stopped some other way. Some serial molesters have as many as 400 victims in their lifetime, according to statistical information.

Top 7 ways the cancel culture is wrecking the moral fiber of our youth

#1. Drag Queen Story Hour

#2. Gender-bender hormones and chemical castration drugs (puberty blockers)

#3. Sex “change” operations that can mutilate genitals, scar the patients, wreck libido, damage organs, cause infertility, lead to depression and suicide, etc.

#4. Children exposed to perverts and a lack of moral fortitude

#5. Child and human trafficking operations around the world, at the border and across America

#6. Destroying religion while propagating worship of Satan and witchcraft

#7. Dismantling the moral fiber, ethics and family values of our country

U.S. sees record migration influx as pandemic border restrictions lift

Washington Post | May 11, 2023

EL PASO — The Biden administration Thursday vowed that its border strategy would succeed over time despite a record influx of migrants across the U.S.-Mexico border as it lifts pandemic-era measures and overcrowding worsens in government facilities.

Illegal border crossings have topped 10,000 per day this week, the highest levels ever, as the Title 42 border policy expired at 11:59 p.m. Thursday. Thousands of migrants forded the Rio Grande into the Brownsville, Tex., area, or arrived elsewhere, including more than 800 miles away on the dusty strip of U.S. land between the riverbanks and the border wall east of downtown El Paso.

With Border Patrol stations and processing centers maxed out, officials authorized the release of migrants without court dates at locations where facilities exceeded 125 percent of their holding capacity or other thresholds were surpassed. But a federal judge stepped in late Thursday to block the release plan, granting a temporary restraining order sought by Florida’s attorney general.

Spike proteins in COVID-19 vaccines can cause BRAIN DAMAGE, neurosurgeon reveals

Image: Spike proteins in COVID-19 vaccines can cause BRAIN DAMAGE, neurosurgeon reveals

(Natural News) Retired American neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock recently shared his shocking discovery that the spike proteins, induced by the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine, can cause neurological damage.

“When there’s systemic inflammation or any kind of trauma occurs in the body, it produces inflammation and activation of the immune system. This sends a signal to the brain within minutes and starts activating the microglia, which is the inflammatory, cytotoxic cell in the brain,” Blaylock explained.

“When there is a stimulation of the immune system, the ramified microglia go to the primed microglia stage. The pseudopodia are retracted and it becomes a more rounded-looking cell. Inside the primed microglia, there is an intense upregulation of cytokine, chemokine and excitotoxin production, but they’re not released from the cell so there may be some minor immune reaction, but otherwise, there’s not much sign of a reaction.”

According to Blaylock, this happens after getting the first dose of the injection. He added that it is important to note that chemokines attract macrophages, or white blood cells, to the brain. A macrophage in the brain looks exactly like microglia and can also undergo priming.

As the second dose is injected months later, primed microglia become fully activated and will then release all the toxic components. “You get chronically activated microglia, [an] overactivated state and there’s a threefold higher inflammatory reaction than you’d normally get with microglial activation,” Blaylock said.

Brighteon.TV

He further explained that when one gets an infection and recovers from it, the microglia shift from the activated state back to the ramified state. In the ramified state, instead of releasing harmful chemicals the microglia release neurotrophins that repair the damage done during the activated state.

Studies: Spike protein alters neurological functions

Blaylock also cited several published papers that pointed to the harmful effects of the shots, particularly how spike protein can alter neurological functions. (Related: Ben Armstrong: There’s plenty of evidence that COVID-19 vaccines can damage the brain.)

In one study, researchers placed the spike protein in a cell and it formed abundant exosomes that not only contained the spike protein but also two microRNAs. Blaylock said: “The spike protein contained in the exosome was shown to cause a sharp decline in [an interferon regulating, self-controlled, system] IRE9 in microglia making them infinitely more destructive.”

Another study found that antibodies to only a fragment of the spike protein induced neuroinflammation and impaired episodic memory in mice. This, according to Blaylock, is also happening in humans who’ve had this injection – they’re having impaired memory.

“The brain has a special anti-inflammatory system built into it … and what this does is it down-regulates all the inflammatory responses,” Blaylock explained. “And so, what they found, is after immunization with the spike protein, it develops these immune reactions to the spike protein, just of that fragment, and there was a loss in episodic memory in those animals. The second injection is always worse.”

Another research on the mitochondrial effects showed that the spike protein increased microglia mitochondrial activity, producing extremely high levels of reactive oxygen and reactive nitrogen species. This makes the microglia more destructive than they normally would be.

The paper concluded that there was a 64 percent increase in the principal inflammatory component (inflammasome) in a cell. It also showed that the spike protein impaired the ability of the brain to tolerate inflammation and greatly enhanced the brain cytokine storm.

FOOD COLLAPSE INCOMING: Ongoing drought forces farmers to abandon wheat crops

Image: FOOD COLLAPSE INCOMING: Ongoing drought forces farmers to abandon wheat crops

(Natural News) The ongoing drought in large parts of the United States is forcing wheat farmers to abandon a portion of their crop at rates not seen in over a century.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), producers, especially in the U.S. Plains region, are expected to harvest only about 67 percent of their planted acres, the lowest harvest ratio since 1917. (Related: Food collapse incoming: Globalist war on nitrogen emissions putting entire global food supply at risk.)

The high rate of abandonment stemmed from years of freak weather patterns in the Great Plains that took their toll on American grainfields. Many wheat plants planted this winter were stunted by a lack of moisture, making many unable to produce the heads of grain that are harvested for their nutrients.

Farmers who are leaving many of their acres unharvested are filing crop insurance claims for failed acres or abandoning wheat altogether to plant something else.

Justin Gilpin, chief executive officer of the trade group Kansas Wheat, announced that his organization is about to take a tour of Kansas, the country’s top wheat-growing state, to allow analysts to take surveys of fields and make production estimates.

“We’ll see short wheat, thin strands, some wheat that looks really good and a lot of fields that aren’t going to be harvested,” he said.

Kansas, Texas wheat suffering greatly

All told, some 37.5 million acres were planted last fall, either with soft red or hard red winter wheat. The Agriculture Department’s estimate suggests that just 25.3 million of those planted acres of wheat have grown anything worth harvesting.

Brighteon.TV

Of the 67 percent of wheat that can be harvested, the USDA noted that just 28 percent of that crop has been rated to be in good-to-excellent condition.

The soft red winter wheat crop is used mainly as animal feed and for processed foods, while hard red winter wheat is used in baked goods. Hard red wheat also represents about 40 percent of total U.S. wheat production and can be grown either as a cash crop or a cover crop.

In Kansas, the top producer of hard red winter wheat, around 10 percent of the crop was abandoned. Meanwhile, in Texas, a whopping 65 percent of hard red wheat acres were abandoned.

Both abandonment rates are well above the historical averages of six percent for Kansas and 55 percent in Texas over the past 10 years. They are also well above the rate of abandonment predicted by agriculture analytics firm Gro Intelligence of eight percent in Kansas and 60 percent in Texas.

The punishing conditions the country’s hard red winter wheat have been in are underlined by the USDA’s crop conditions report. In Kansas, only 11 percent of the crop is in good-to-excellent condition, far below the 38 percent five-year average. Hard red winter wheat in Texas, Nebraska and Oklahoma aren’t much better at 20 percent, 12 percent and seven percent, respectively.

Wheat futures rising as analysts predict more trouble for crops

The USDA warned that the high rate of abandonment will drag American wheat supplies to levels lower than analysts were expecting. Levels are expected to fall to their lowest in 16 years.

This will keep domestic prices elevated and lead to more wheat imports from rival producers in countries like Canada and Argentina.

Concerns about tight U.S. wheat supplies and ongoing troubles in the Black Sea caused by the Russian special military operation in Ukraine are causing wheat futures to rise.

Futures for hard red winter wheat, the staple variety grown in drought-stricken states like Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas, surged by nearly seven percent following the release of the USDA’s data. This is the biggest intraday gain for the most-active contract since October 2022.

Booming Demand for Obesity Pill to Solve Junk Food Problem

wegovy obesity medication

  • The antiobesity injection Wegovy (semaglutide) has become so popular that, in early May 2023, Novo Nordisk announced it would cut the supply of starter doses for the U.S. market to “safeguard continuity of care” for existing patients

  • To maintain weight loss achieved on Wegovy, you must continue taking the drug indefinitely, or the weight will come back

  • The active ingredient in Wegovy, semaglutide, works by mimicking a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which targets areas of your brain that regulate appetite and food intake. It also lowers blood sugar and slows the passage of food through your gut

  • In addition to a long list of common side effects, including severe nausea and vomiting, Wegovy also comes with warnings for thyroid parafollicular cell (C-cell) tumors, pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, acute kidney injury, diabetic retinopathy and suicidal thinking and behavior

  • If we are ever going to level out or diminish obesity and obesity-related cancer rates, we must address the underlying problem, which is a preponderance of ultraprocessed foods in our diet. Many studies have linked ultraprocessed foods to obesity, obesity-related cancers and poor mental health. We need better food, not more medication

As of 2021, the U.S. obesity rate among adults over the age of 20 was 41.9%.

Unfortunately, people have been indoctrinated into thinking that “magic pills” are the answer, opposed to taking a long, hard look at your lifestyle, diet and eating habits.

Wegovy (semaglutide), given as a weekly self-injection, has become so popular that, in early May 2023, Novo Nordisk announced it would cut the supply of starter doses for the U.S. market to “safeguard continuity of care” for existing patients.

As reported by CNBC:

“Novo Nordisk reported forecast-beating first-quarter sales Thursday following a spike in demand for its blockbuster weight-loss drug … [Chief financial officer Karsten Munk] Knudsen said the company was ‘ramping up supply every day,’ and currently had two contract manufacturers working to boost output, with a third expected to come online in the second half of 2023.

He added that there were further plans to increase production in the coming years. ‘This is also a reflection of a very big market and a very big unmet need for safe and efficacious medication, and that’s where Wegovy comes in, being very efficacious and safe for patients [with obesity],’ he said.”

Wegovy was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in June 2021 for “chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight with at least one weight-related condition (such as high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol).”

The drug is indicated for patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 27 or greater who have at least one weight-related ailment, or in patients with a BMI of 30 or greater.

According to the FDA, the active ingredient in Wegovy, semaglutide, works by “mimicking a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) that targets areas of the brain that regulate appetite and food intake.”

GLP-1, which semaglutide mimicks, also lowers blood sugar and slows the passage of food through your gut.

Gastrointestinal side effects are so common, the dose must be gradually increased, from 0.25 milligrams to 2.4 mg over the course of 16 to 20 weeks.

In all, safety and efficacy have been studied in four 68-week trials involving a total of 2,600 patients who got the drug and 1,500 who got a placebo. In the largest placebo-controlled trial, nondiabetic patients who received Wegovy lost an average of 12.4% of their body weight compared to the placebo group.

In another trial, which enrolled adults with Type 2 diabetes, the average weight loss was 6.2% of their initial bodyweight, so clearly, diabetes can have a marked impact on the drug’s effectiveness.

As for side effects, the most common ones cited by the FDA are:

  • Severe nausea and vomiting

  • Diarrhea or constipation

  • Abdominal pain and distension

  • Indigestion, belching and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

  • Headache

  • Fatigue

  • Dizziness

  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) in patients with Type 2 diabetes

  • Gastroenteritis (intestinal infection) and flatulence

Wegovy also comes with warnings for:

  • Thyroid parafollicular cell (C-cell) tumors — For this reason, the drug should not be used by those with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)

  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) — The drug has not been studied in people with preexisting pancreatitis or a history of pancreatitis

  • Gallbladder problems, including gallstones

  • Low blood sugar

  • Acute kidney injury

  • Diabetic retinopathy (damage to your eye’s retina)

  • Increased heart rate

  • Suicidal thinking and behavior

Perhaps most importantly, to maintain your weight loss, you must keep taking Wegovy indefinitely. If you stop taking it, the pounds you’ve shed will come back. This explains why Novo Nordisk felt impelled to limit the availability of the drug for new patients, as they need to make sure those who are already on it can stay on it.

According to Novo Nordisk, “hundreds of thousands” of Americans are already on the drug,

but considering all the side effects, the warnings, and the fact that you have to take the drug for the rest of your life, how can anyone think that this is the answer to our obesity problem? So many things can go wrong here.

The crux of the problem is that this drug does nothing to address the root cause of the obesity. You’re merely fiddling with brain chemistry to artificially suppress appetite, potentially becoming suicidal in the process.

Meanwhile, research has shown that processed foods affect your brain in detrimental ways, resulting in anxiety, depression and cognitive decline.

So, basically, many are eating processed junk that dysregulates their brain, and then taking a drug that merely dysregulates their brain even further.

Now, when taking Wegovy, you’re supposed to follow a diet plan that stresses fresh whole foods and healthy fats.

Processed foods are supposed to be strictly limited. But how many patients actually follow that plan? If they did, they probably wouldn’t need the drug!

The obvious answer here is to simply ditch processed foods and give your brain and body the nutrition that it needs for optimal function and regulation. If you’re taking Wegovy and still eat processed foods, guess what? You’re basically doubling up on your risk of chronic diseases like cancer and mental problems. To me, that’s not a solution. It’s deepening a problem that, for most people, can be resolved through diet and lifestyle changes alone.

Taking a closer look at how processed foods affect mental health, here’s an excerpt from The New York Times:

“Roughly 60% of the calories in the average American diet

come from highly processed foods. We’ve known for decades that eating such packaged products — like some breakfast cereals, snack bars, frozen meals and virtually all packaged sweets, among many other things — is linked to unwelcome health outcomes, like an increased risk of diabetes, obesity and even cancer.

But more recent studies point to another major downside … They appear to have a significant impact on our minds, too. Research from the past 10 or so years has shown that the more ultraprocessed foods [UPF] a person eats, the higher the chances that they feel depressed and anxious …

In one 2022 study

of over 10,000 adults in the United States, the more UPFs participants ate, the more likely they were to report mild depression or feelings of anxiety. ‘There was a significant increase in mentally unhealthy days for those eating 60% or more of their calories from UPFs,’ Dr. Hecht, the study’s author, said …

New research has also found a connection between high UPF consumption and cognitive decline. A 2022 study

that followed nearly 11,000 Brazilian adults over a decade found a correlation between eating ultraprocessed foods and worse cognitive function (the ability to learn, remember, reason and solve problems).

‘While we have a natural decline in these abilities with age, we saw that this decline accelerated by 28% in people who consume more than 20% of their calories from UPFs,’ said Natalia Gomes Goncalves, a professor at the University of São Paulo Medical School and the lead author of the study.”

While details are still sketchy, it is reasonable to hypothesize that the reason ultraprocessed foods have such a detrimental impact on mental and physical health is because they are loaded with high fructose corn syrup, which has loads of unfiltered starch in addition to the sugars and, of course, seed oils. Both of these factors tend to increase serotonin in the gut, which increases inflammation and cortisol levels that impair mental health.

Additionally, chemical additives in ultraprocessed foods also have a negative impact on your gut microbiome. Poor gut microbiota, in turn, promotes chronic inflammation, which can trigger or worsen a host of ailments, including obesity and depression. Considering the importance of a healthy gut, doesn’t it seem beyond irrational to take a drug that causes severe gastrointestinal problems?

If we, as a society, are ever going to level out or diminish obesity and obesity-related cancer rates, we must address the elephant in the room, which is ultraprocessed foods. We cannot medicate ourselves out of these problems, especially considering that drugs like Wegovy come with a warning of thyroid cancer and must be taken for life or else the weight comes back.

Many studies have linked ultraprocessed foods to obesity and obesity-related cancers. One of the most recent, published in May 2023, analyzed “the association of food deserts and food swamps with obesity-related cancer mortality in the U.S.” As noted in this study:

“Obesity-related cancers account for 40% of all cancers in the US. Healthy food consumption is a modifiable factor shown to reduce obesity-related cancer mortality, but residing in areas with less access to grocery stores (food deserts) or higher access to fast food (food swamps) reduces healthy food access …

This cross-sectional ecologic study used U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Environment Atlas data from 2012, 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2020 and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention mortality data from 2010 to 2020. A total of 3038 U.S. counties or county equivalents with complete information on food environment scores and obesity-related cancer mortality data were included …

There was a 77% increased odds of having high obesity-related cancer mortality rates among U.S. counties or county equivalents with high food swamp scores …

The findings of this cross-sectional ecologic study suggest that policy makers, funding agencies, and community stakeholders should implement sustainable approaches to combating obesity and cancer and establishing access to healthier food, such as creating more walkable neighborhoods and community gardens.”

Meanwhile, the U.S. government is intentionally moving the food industry in the opposite direction, away from fresh, whole, natural foods and toward lab-grown meats and bioengineered plant foods.

It’s done in the name of “sustainability” and “food security,” but the real-world ramifications are not hard to predict. Replacing real food with ultraprocessed and genetically modified foods will devastate human health and reduce life expectancy.

Italy is one of the few countries that seems to have grasped this and is now seeking to ban lab-grown meat production, sale and consumption.

As noted by Italy’s Minister for Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, Francesco Lollobrigida, lab-grown foods “do not guarantee quality, well-being and the protection of our culture, our tradition.”

Indeed, synthetic meat, for example, is the epitome of ultraprocessed food,

and it’s naïve to think it won’t have health effects similar to other ultraprocessed foods. Obesity,

Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and depression are but a few of the conditions known to be promoted and exacerbated by an ultraprocessed food diet.

At the same time, the White House is promoting the Cancer Moonshot,

a program aimed at cutting cancer rates by 50% or more over the next 25 years. There’s no doubt in my mind that this program will fail, as it too is focused on biotechnology rather than creating a solid foundation for health through wholesome, unadulterated foods and the removal of chemical food additives.

CRISPR gene editing, for example, has been shown to trigger cancer. Cells whose genomes are successfully edited by CRISPR-Cas9 have carcinogenic potential, turning them into proverbial ticking time bombs. Yet gene editing is hailed as the answer to everything from food insecurity to chronic diseases like cancer. It’s as though science has completely disconnected from reality.

“If you’re struggling with excess weight or chronic disease, one of the foundational ‘treatment’ strategies you need to embrace is to eat real food.”

Ultimately, the answer to chronic disease rates, obesity and food insecurity lies not in a biotech-centered food system that is controlled from the top down, or in brain-altering drugs that suppress appetite. The only viable long-term answer is a decentralized food system that connects communities with farmers who grow real food in sustainable ways and distribute that food locally. We need better food, not more medicine.

The fact that “hundreds of thousands” of Americans are already relying on a drug that’s been on the market for less than two years is a sad testament to how underinformed people are when it comes to health basics.

If you’re struggling with excess weight or chronic disease, one of the foundational “treatment” strategies you need to embrace is to eat real food. A paper in Public Health Nutrition published in 2019 tells you how to identify ultraprocessed foods so that you can avoid them:

“Ultra-processed foods are defined within the NOVA classification system, which groups foods according to the extent and purpose of industrial processing.

Processes enabling the manufacture of ultra-processed foods include the fractioning of whole foods into substances, chemical modifications of these substances, assembly of unmodified and modified food substances, frequent use of cosmetic additives and sophisticated packaging …

Minimally processed foods, that together with unprocessed foods make up NOVA group 1, are unprocessed foods altered by industrial processes such as removal of inedible or unwanted parts, drying, crushing, grinding, fractioning, roasting, boiling, pasteurization, refrigeration, freezing, placing in containers, vacuum packaging, or non-alcoholic fermentation.

None of these processes add salt, sugar, oils or fats, or other food substances to the original food. Their main aim is to extend the life of [the food] … enabling their storage for longer use …

NOVA group 2 is of processed culinary ingredients. These are substances obtained directly from group 1 foods or from nature, like oils and fats, sugar and salt. They are created by industrial processes such as pressing, centrifuging, refining, extracting or mining, and their use is in the preparation, seasoning and cooking of group 1 foods.

NOVA group 3 is of processed foods. These are industrial products made by adding salt, sugar or other substance found in group 2 to group 1 foods, using preservation methods such as canning and bottling, and, in the case of breads and cheeses, using non-alcoholic fermentation. Food processing here aims to increase the durability of group 1 foods …

Ultra-processed foods are formulations of ingredients, mostly of exclusive industrial use, that result from a series of industrial processes (hence ‘ultra-processed’) …

A practical way to identify an ultra-processed product is to check to see if its list of ingredients contains at least one item characteristic of the NOVA ultra-processed food group, which is to say, either food substances never or rarely used in kitchens … or classes of additives designed to make the final product palatable or more appealing …

Ultra-processed foods include carbonated soft drinks; sweet or savory packaged snacks; chocolate, candies (confectionery); ice cream; mass-produced packaged breads and buns; margarines and other spreads; cookies (biscuits), pastries, cakes and cake mixes; breakfast ‘cereals’; pre-prepared pies and pasta and pizza dishes; poultry and fish ‘nuggets’ and ‘sticks’, sausages, burgers, hot dogs and other reconstituted meat products; powdered and packaged ‘instant’ soups, noodles and desserts; and many other products.”

Here’s a more detailed breakdown of ingredients to look out for:

  • Ingredients never or rarely used in kitchens:

    • High-fructose corn syrup and other added sugars, such as invert sugar, maltodextrin, dextrose and lactose

    • Hydrogenated or interesterified oils

    • Hydrolyzed proteins

    • Soy protein isolate

    • Gluten

    • Casein

  • Additives:

    • Natural or artificial flavors

    • Flavor enhancers

    • Colors

    • Emulsifiers

    • Emulsifying salts

    • Artificial sweeteners

    • Thickeners

    • Anti-foaming agents

    • Bulking agents

    • Carbonating agents

    • Foaming agents

    • Gelling and glazing agents

To these lists, I would add any food that contains vegetable oils or seed oils, such as corn oil, sunflower oil, canola oil, cottonseed oil, soybean oil, grapeseed and safflower oil.

Seed oils are commonly used in cooking, even home cooking, but if you want to shed weight and improve your health, they need to be strictly avoided, as they’re very high in omega-6 linoleic acid, which is a primary driver of chronic disease. To learn more, see “Linoleic Acid — The Most Destructive Ingredient in Your Diet.”
