Google receives request from federal authorities for identities of people who watched “certain YouTube videos”

Federal authorities are asking Google to identify who watched “certain YouTube videos” between Jan. 1 and 8, 2023.

This is according to unsealed court documents viewed by media outlets, which found that federal investigators in the United States are asking for the names, addresses, telephone and other relevant user activity, and even their IP addresses. (Related: White House forced YouTube to censor COVID-19 “misinformation,” internal documents reveal.)

The demand for information comes as part of an investigation into a YouTube account going by the name “elonmuskwhm.” Authorities believe elonmuskwhm is selling bitcoin for cash and is therefore breaking money laundering laws as well as running an unlicensed money transmitting business.

As part of the investigation, undercover agents reportedly sent links to YouTube tutorials that covered everything from mapping via drones and augmented reality software to elonmuskwhm. The federal investigators then asked Google to provide details on who had viewed these videos. Some of the videos received more than 30,000 views.

“There is reason to believe that these records would be relevant and material to an ongoing criminal investigation, including by providing identification information about the perpetrators,” said the federal authorities in their request to the tech giant.

Authorities increasingly demanding sensitive personal information from tech companies like Google

According to the documents viewed by media outlets, a court granted the federal government’s request for information. However, the court did ask Google to not publicize the request.

It is unclear if Google complied with the court order and handed over all or some of the data the authorities were asking for.

The investigation over elonmuskwhm is not the first time Google received a request from authorities for data. In another incident, authorities asked the Big Tech company for a list of accounts that “viewed and/or interacted” with eight YouTube livestreams.

Law enforcement agencies asked for the information upon learning that they were being watched by thousands of people after they began investigating an area in Portsmouth, Maine, following a report that an explosive was placed inside a trash can.

One of those livestreams was posted by the “Boston and Maine Live” account, which has over 130,000 subscribers. Law enforcement agencies warned that the live streams caused police departments in other parts of the country to also receive fake bomb threats. It is also unclear whether Google complied with the request for information.

A Google spokesperson said in a statement to media outlets that the company follows a “rigorous process” to protect the privacy of its users. But critics and privacy advocates have rightly pointed out that government agencies are easily able to sidestep any actual safeguards and are using their power to obtain sensitive information on people who just happened to watch specific YouTube videos and are not in any way doing anything illegal.

“What we watch online can reveal deeply sensitive information about us – our politics, our passions, our religious beliefs and much more,” said John Davisson, senior counsel at the Electronic Privacy Information Center. “It’s fair to expect that law enforcement won’t have access to that information without probable cause. This order turns that assumption on its head.”

Israeli settlers capitalize on conflict to erect ILLEGAL West Bank outposts –

According to a recent report by Al-Jazeera, Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank have significantly increased their construction of illegal outposts and roads between October and January.

The report, based on data collected by activists and corroborated with satellite imagery by Al-Jazeera‘s verification unit, Sanad, reveals the establishment of at least 15 illegal outposts, and 18 illegal roads, along with numerous fences and roadblocks. (Related: “Great Israeli Real Estate Event” sparks outrage after illegally advertising properties that are on track to be confiscated from besieged West Bank.)

The expansion of Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank, currently numbering around 700,000, is a growing concern. Many settlers reside in settlements deemed illegal under international law, although considered legal under Israeli law. Typically, new settlements on Palestinian land begin as illegal outposts, which are later retroactively authorized by Israeli courts once the settler population grows.

The rate of outpost construction has surged since the commencement of the conflict in Gaza on Oct. 7. Mauricio Lapchik, an activist with Peace Now, noted: “When there is conflict, settlers exploit the situation to establish more outposts.”

Satellite imagery illustrates settlers pushing deeper into Palestinian territory, constructing roads exclusively for Jewish Israelis. These developments fragment Palestinian communities, restricting their movement and access to agricultural lands.

Moreover, the escalation in outpost and road construction has coincided with increased settler attacks aimed at displacing Palestinians.

Since Oct. 7, the United Nations (UN) has documented 573 settler attacks in the West Bank, with Israeli forces accompanying settlers in half of these incidents. Settler violence has resulted in the deaths of at least nine Palestinians, while Israeli forces have killed 382 individuals.

Alarming incidents, such as the arrival of armed settlers in the village of Wadi al-Siq shortly after Oct. 7, demonstrate the escalating tensions.

Settlers, accompanied by police, engaged in destructive actions, causing fear and displacement among Palestinian residents like Abu Bashar, who lamented the loss of their land.

Since Israel initiated a severe bombing campaign in Gaza on Oct. 7 in response to a deadly Hamas attack, incidents of settler violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem have surged, more than doubling from an average of three to eight incidents per day, according to the UN.

This escalation in settler attacks has compelled hundreds of Palestinians to flee their homes over the past three weeks amid the Israeli bombardment of Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of more than 9,500 people.

Who exactly are the settlers?

Settlers are Israeli citizens who reside on privately owned Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. The vast majority of settlements have been constructed, either wholly or partially, on private Palestinian land.

Currently, over 700,000 settlers, constituting 10 percent of Israel’s nearly seven million population, inhabit 150 settlements and 128 outposts scattered across the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Authorized by the Israeli government, settlements differ from outposts, which are constructed without governmental authorization and can range in size from small shanties housing a few individuals to communities accommodating up to 400 people.

Motivations for settling in the occupied territories vary, with some drawn for religious reasons while others are attracted by a comparatively lower cost of living and financial incentives provided by the government. Notably, one-third of all settlers are ultra-Orthodox Jews.

A significant portion of Israeli Jews residing in the West Bank believe that the construction of settlements enhances the security of the country. This perspective asserts that settlements serve as a buffer for Israel’s national security by limiting the movement of Palestinians and undermining the feasibility of a Palestinian state.

However, some factions within the Israeli left argue that settlement expansion undermines the two-state solution and, consequently, Israel’s prospects for peace.

Trudeau’s EV mandate could COLLAPSE Canada’s power grid, study concludes –

The proposed federal mandate of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s administration to only allow electric vehicle (EV) sales would bring about immense chaos and threaten to collapse Canada’s power grids.

“Requiring all new vehicle sales in Canada to be electric in just 11 years means the provinces need to substantially increase their power generation capabilities and adding the equivalent of 10 new mega-dams or 13 new gas plants in such a short timeline isn’t realistic or feasible,” said G. Cornelis van Kooten, a Fraser Institute senior fellow and author of “Failure to Charge: A Critical Look at Canada’s EV Policy.”

“Canadians need to know just how much additional electricity is going to be required in order to meet Ottawa’s electric vehicle mandate, because its impact on the provinces – and taxpayers and rate payers – will be significant.”

Van Kooten’s detailed analysis of the imminent EV mandate was released last March 14.

He estimated that national electric generation would need to go up by 15.3 percent in 11 years to meet the 2035 target. According to van Kooten, this would mean constructing no less than 10 new mega hydro dams nationwide, or at least 13 new average-sized gas plants.

For those driving the so-called “green” power, that would mean some 5,000 new wind turbines, which all must still be supported by natural gas peaker plants due to their unreliability when the wind is not blowing.

“The real-world situation is not as easy as merely replacing current ICE [internal combustion engine] vehicles with EVs, and there are many obstacles to be overcome on the path of electrifying the personal vehicle fleets within Canada,” van Kooten said.

“The type of electricity that goes into the grid would also be a big consideration when switching over to EVs, as jurisdictions will need to increase their electricity production capabilities with green sources that meet the additional hourly load requirements and can be employed quickly to balance intermittent renewable energy sources.”

Van Kooten’s study looks at how much extra electricity will be needed in all of Canada’s largest provinces, namely Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec, to meet the 2035 EV mandate.

Canada to ban sale of gas-powered cars by 2035

Canada plans to prohibit the sale of new gasoline-powered cars by 2035, while the European Union (EU) also has an EV mandate all set for the same year.

Canadian Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault declared just before Christmas the “Electric Vehicle Availability Standard,” which mandates that all new cars and trucks be electric by 2035. (Related: Canadian electric truck owner describes his EV experience as a frustrating SCAM.)

This plan would in effect prevent the sale of new gasoline- or diesel-only powered vehicles after that year.

The fact is that electric cars, which cost thousands more to make and buy, are unsuitable for Canada’s cold climate, provide poor range and long charging times (particularly in cold weather), have batteries that take enormous resources to make, and are hard to recycle.

Furthermore, many Canadian authorities are already struggling with electricity demand challenges.

For example, Albertans were recently warned by the provincial government to conserve their electricity use to avoid possible blackouts as the province had encountered unparalleled electricity demand because of extreme cold temperatures.

Moreover, British Columbia and Manitoba were recently forced to import electricity from other provinces to meet electricity demand as a result of a serious drought in western Canada.

The latest report on grid reliability in North America found Ontario at an “elevated risk” for power outages.

Quebec Energy Minister Pierre Fitzgibbon stated recently the province doesn’t have sufficient electricity to satisfy all the corporations wanting to perform industrial projects.

The forthcoming EV rush, without adequate increases in electricity generation capacity, is destined to worsen grid reliability issues.

Adding to that intricacy are the federal government’s recent Clean Electricity Regulations, which push provinces to move away from using fossil fuels like natural gas and oil in electricity generation.

These regulations force provinces such as Ontario and Alberta, which do not heavily depend on hydropower, to resort to renewable energy sources to meet the rising electricity demand. However, renewable energy like wind and solar are irregular sources of power. Meaning, they are not always available and need backup capacity, raising the cost of electricity generation.

Tech startup working on building a robot that uses AI-powered “brain” –

Artificial intelligence and robotics startup Physical Intelligence is working on bringing AI to the physical world through a robot with a brain.

Over the past 15 years or so, AI systems that work entirely in software have grown far more sophisticated than their moving counterparts. Non-AI-powered robots, meanwhile, can easily manufacture anything in factories and clean up after people at home but only carry out a relatively small range of tasks compared to the increasingly general nature of AI-powered chatbots.

In a move to bridge the gap between artificial intelligence and the physical world, Physical Intelligence has emerged with $70 million in seed funding. The company, founded by a team of renowned robotics and AI experts, aims to develop foundation models and learning algorithms that can power a wide range of robots and physically-actuated devices.

The massive investment – from big names including OpenAI and Sequoia Capital – reflects the immense potential the financial world see in Physical Intelligence’s vision to create a universal robot model that can bring AI to the physical world and enable other kinds of robots to perform tasks across various applications. (Related: Tech firms developing and deploying AI that can deceptively MIMIC HUMAN BEHAVIOR.)

Formed this year by a team of robotics and AI experts, the company plans to create software that can add high-level intelligence to a wide variety of robots and machines. Or, as co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Karol Hausman puts it in Physical Intelligence’s first public interview since founding the company: “We aim to bring AI to the physical world with a universal model that can power any robot or any physical device basically for any application.”

Physical Intelligence’s thesis is that the time is right for a new approach to building robotics AI models. The company looks to merge the techniques used to build language models with its own techniques for controlling and instructing machines. The end goal would be to create an AI that works as a type of general-purpose robotics system.

Physical Intelligence among a growing number of startups working on general robotics

Hausman spent the last few years as a scientist working on robotics at Google. His fellow co-founders include Sergey Levine, who has done pioneering robotics work as a professor at the University of California, Berkeley; Chelsea Finn, a professor at Stanford University; Brian Ichter, a former Google research scientist; and Lachy Groom, a former executive at the payments company Stripe and prominent tech investor.

Physical Intelligence wants to develop software that can be applied across many types of robotics. To do this, it has set to work creating its own AI model designed to bring basic human abilities to machines.

“I think it’s really cool what people are building with humanoids,” Groom said. “But what fundamentally makes humans interesting is the brain, not our hardware. We are the ultimate generalists.”

Efforts to improve the software that powers robots have been going on for decades. Notably, a company called Willow Garage, formed in 2006, spent several years trying to build a type of general-purpose software that could be shared across robots and give them a unified set of basic functions. While its software was picked up by several companies and robotics developers, Willow Garage’s work did not lead to a huge leap forward in robotic intelligence, and the company wound down its operations in 2014.

Other companies like Rethink Robotics tried to build systems that could learn to do jobs by copying movements shown to them by humans. Some startups have recently implemented AI that uses repetition to teach robotic arms to pick up objects and perform tasks similar to those done by humans in warehouses.

Other companies have begun building androids designed to mimic human movements. One of these startups, Figure AI, was able to raise $675 million to help it build robots to work in logistics and manufacturing facilities. Notable investors include Jeff Bezos, Microsoft, OpenAI and Nvidia.

Physical Intelligence faces stiff competition from some of these companies, especially Figure AI and electric vehicle giant Tesla. They are also either researching or manufacturing androids and working on general-purpose robotics software.

“Realistically, I think we are going to need a long and very serious research effort to make this happen,” says Levine. “But there are enough signs that the biggest obstacles to use robots in the real world are now solvable.”
