ARMED GUARDS now escorting delivery drivers in crime-ridden California – NaturalNews.com

Rising crime in the Golden State has prompted companies to deploy armed guards alongside delivery drivers.

According to NBC Bay Area, one company – Core Mart – kickstarted the trend by hiring armed security to accompany drivers making deliveries. This comes as delivery drivers in the South Bay say they are increasingly worried about becoming the targets of robbery.

The San Jose Police Department (SJPD) said it saw a slight increase in the robbery of delivery trucks two years ago, but noted that it hasn’t seen a spike in such incidents lately. NBC Bay Area reached out to Core Mart’s parent company, but it declined to explain why the armed guards are deployed.

Flavio Lopez, an employee of another delivery company, expressed his desire for a guard or at least a second person to help monitor goods. While he hasn’t been robbed, Lopez has had run-ins downtown. “Stuff you [got to] deal with downtown; it is what it is,” he told NBC Bay Area.

Darrell Cortez, a retired SJPD officer who now works in corporate and retail security, noted that if one company was using the guards, others in the industry would likely follow suit and adopt the strategy.

“Unfortunately, this is what society has become now with armed guards guarding merchandise from the retailer – because there seems to be a sense of lawlessness in our society,” he remarked.

“It’s very unfortunate. You and I pay for it. The consumer pays for it on the backend because prices increase, because the merchandise is going out the door and no one is stopping the bad guys because of the threat of violence.”

ZeroHedge‘s Tyler Durden commented on the development, sarcastically noting that California “sounds like a wonderful place to do business.”

“Things have gotten so utopian in the state of California [that] delivery drivers are being accompanied by armed guards due to ‘crime concerns’ while out making deliveries – which means that somewhere in a board room, it likely made more financial sense to pay for all new security staff than it did to continue to allow drivers to get robbed (and inventory lost) as was happening prior.” (Related: Organized retail crime, not just shoplifting, is surging across the U.S. with dangerous and costly consequences.)

Delivery trucks prone to being robbed

Crimes targeting delivery trucks and their drivers aren’t isolated to California. In January, two instances of truck thefts were reported in Memphis.

The first instance involved the armed robbery of a FedEx truck, where four men clad in all-black and wearing ski masks took several packages from it. The second instance happened hours after the FedEx truck was targeted. In the same manner, three men wearing all-black stole packages from a UPS delivery truck.

Long-distance trucker Robert Kwasniewski also recounted his experience of being victimized while just trying to stop at a gas station in Bluff City. The incident, he told Action News 5, made him wary of stopping in Memphis.

“[I] open the door to get out, and I see a guy run from the back of my trailer with a box in his hands,” said Kwasniewski. “I’m like, ‘Man, what are [you all] doing?”

“It’s a shame and it is scary, but I am not coming through Memphis anymore and I’m not even going to stop. [This] puts us … truck drivers in a bad position because coming from Michigan going west, you exactly run out of time right on the border, right before you get to Arkansas you are going to run out of time.”

Former Biden advisor claims First Amendment is OUT OF CONTROL – NaturalNews.com

A former advisor to the Biden administration has claimed that the First Amendment, which protects freedom of speech, is out of control.

Tim Wu, former special assistant for technology and competition policy to President Joe Biden, made this claim in a July 2 op-ed published in the New York Times. The piece, titled “The First Amendment is Out of Control,” took a “somewhat innovative” route to argue against free speech, according to independent journalist Didi Rankovic.

Wu painstakingly framed the potential abuse of the First Amendment by Big Tech as a concern, citing the latest U.S. Supreme Court ruling regarding Texas and Florida laws as an example. Rankovic added that despite the former advisor’s attempt to make his message seem unbiased, his piece actually does the opposite.

The op-ed argues that the First Amendment is an obstacle for the government to protect citizens, ostensibly for being invoked as a tool to restrain censorship. But Rankovic countered: “In the same vein, contrary to the sentiment of this ‘essay,’ the [First Amendment] is there not to protect ‘national security’ – nor does free speech undermine that, in a democracy.”

“When the government colludes with mighty entities like major social platforms, the First Amendment becomes the primary recourse to defend speech now expressed in public square forums forged though the pervasiveness of the internet. This means that the First Amendment, designed to protect citizens from government citizenship, is doing its job,” the independent journalist continued.

According to Rankovic, Wu also expressed dislike over the First Amendment’s use to counter age verification laws that undermine privacy and security, such as California’s Age-Appropriate Design Code.

“Meanwhile, many believe that attacks on this speech-protecting constitutional amendment are what’s actually out of control these days,” Rankovic ultimately remarked. “As has lately become the norm with the First Amendment detractors: This is lots of words, most of them empty, some dramatic, but overall, free speech-unfriendly.”

Ban on TikTok could lead to ban on other “disliked” apps

Rankovic also mentioned the proposed ban on the Chinese video sharing app TikTok, which has been kept at bay the the First Amendment.

“You don’t like TikTok? Let’s just ban it. But the pesky First Amendment stands in the way of that? What Wu ignores here is that the bill that allows banning TikTok is so ambiguous it can be used to get rid of other, for whatever reason, ‘disliked’ apps.” (Related: TikTok ban bill could lead to broader surveillance and censorship by the U.S. government.)

A separate piece on Reclaim The Net by journalist Dan Freith expounded on the repercussions of this ban, noting that “it extends beyond TikTok.” Freith continued that “the existence of other platforms for short-form video content doesn’t negate the issue of the government eliminating a speech platform.”

“ByteDance or TikTok-operated websites, desktop apps, mobile apps or VR [virtual reality] apps automatically fall under both definitions, but that doesn’t mean that those definitions could be applied to other apps or websites in the future. Additionally, the scope widens to potentially include almost any social or content-sharing platform, desktop app, mobile app or VR app with over one million monthly active users.”

Freith added that the enforcement of any ban would require the government to convincingly demonstrate that such action is essential for a compelling government interest and is the least restrictive way to achieve that interest. He cited one case in Montana that involved a federal district court stopping a TikTok ban. The decision in the said case was based on the assessment that the ban might not withstand even intermediate scrutiny – highlighting constitutional challenges to such prohibitions.

Open invitation for CORRUPTION: FDA tells staff leaving for pharma jobs that they can work BEHIND THE SCENES to influence the agency – NaturalNews.com

Open invitation for CORRUPTION: FDA tells staff leaving for pharma jobs that they can work BEHIND THE SCENES to influence the agency

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) encourages staffers departing for pharmaceutical industry jobs that they can work behind the scenes to influence the regulator’s decision-making.

The British Medical Journal (BMJ) disclosed this in a July 1 feature penned by its senior editor Peter Doshi. He cited an internal email obtained by the publication through a Freedom of Information request. The said email was sent to departing staffer Dr. Doran Fink, who reviewed Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines while at the FDA and accepted a job at COVID-19 vaccine manufacturer Moderna.

According to the correspondence, U.S. law prohibits some forms of lobbying contact between former FDA staffers who leave to join the private sector. However, the same law doesn’t prohibit former employees from “other activities, including working ‘behind the scenes.'”

Doshi, also an associate professor of pharmaceutical health services research at the University of Maryland‘s School of Pharmacy, said the FDA’s ethics program staff emailed the information to Fink as he was completing his exit requirements. The guidance seems to be part of the standard boilerplate advice sent to employees, and has been included on an FDA web page detailing post-employment restrictions since June 2017.

Doshi told the Defender he was surprised to see “just how proactive FDA is at informing departing employees of their ability to work behind the scenes post-FDA.” He continued: “I was even more surprised to learn that the phrase ‘behind-the-scenes assistance’ actually appears in U.S. regulations.”

U.S. law prohibits direct lobbying, but allows indirect contact

While U.S. law forbids direct lobbying between former regulatory staff and federal agencies, it allows indirect contact. But Doshi remarked that he is “yet to hear an argument for how this serves the public interest.”

He also mentioned in the BMJ report that Fink wasn’t the only one who received an email, as former staffer Dr. Jaya Goswami was also sent the message. Goswami served as a medical officer in the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research from March 2020 to June 2022.

During her time at the FDA, Goswami was responsible for evaluating whether the clinical data for Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine met regulatory standards for approval. Just like Fink, she joined Moderna as its director of clinical development in infectious diseases after the FDA stint.

Craig Holman, a government affairs lobbyist for the consumer advocacy nonprofit Public Citizen, said the legal ability to work “behind the scenes” is woven into federal regulations. This, he added, highlights a critical loophole in U.S. revolving door policy. Holman also described this legally sanctioned revolving door between U.S. regulators and the industries they regulate as “the most pernicious influence-peddling scheme available to wealthy special interests.”

“So, people will leave government service and can immediately start doing influence peddling and lobbying. They can even run a lobbying campaign, as long as they don’t actually pick up the telephone and make the contact with their former officials. That’s exactly the advice that’s being given here,” said Holman.

“The prospects of lucrative private employment after public service can influence official actions by regulators. And the inside connection within the regulatory agency by [the person leaving federal service to work for industry] gives the business community a strong advantage over influencing upcoming regulatory actions.”

Diana Zuckerman, president of the nonprofit National Center for Health Research, also expressed surprise by the FDA’s advice on behind-the-scenes work. She also voiced concern about how proactive the FDA was in providing behind-the-scenes work information to workers as they leave federal service.

“I had this vision that they actually had meaningful restrictions on what people could do for at least a year [after federal service], said Zuckerman, a regulatory policy analyst with decades of experience.

“I just think that this is the key to the revolving door. It’s one thing to know it happens, and it’s another thing to know that the FDA ethics folks are saying, ‘Don’t worry, you can do this.'”

Discount homeware chain Big Lots warns of BANKRUPTCY filing, triggering fears of mass closures – NaturalNews.com

Discount homeware chain Big Lots warns of BANKRUPTCY filing, triggering fears of mass closures

A discount homeware store chain in the U.S. has considered filing for bankruptcy protection, sparking fears of mass store closures.

Columbus, Ohio-based Big Lots, which boasts of almost 1,400 stores across the country, is the latest to warn of money problems. The company has told financial regulators that it many not be able to continue as a “going concern.” Big Lots has seen its earnings fall consistently for each of the past 10 quarters, losing $132 million in the first three months of 2024 alone.

In a recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Big Lots said the losses so far this year – on top of further losses in 2022 and 2023 – meant it had used up most of its spare cash. Retailers need money in the bank to cover the cost of stock. According to company executives, Big Lots “expects to experience further operating losses and expects to experience difficulty remaining in compliance” with credit agreements later this year.

The SEC filing also stated that the company has tried to cut costs, boost customer spending, and get cheaper credit. But these steps might not be enough, raising “substantial doubt about the company’s ability to continue as a going concern.”

Big Lots was founded in 1967 by Sol Shenk. It was one of the first types of store known as close-out, which meant it sold goods that were nearly out of date in the case of food or not the current season for fashion and homeware. The chain grew over the years to include stores operating under several names including Mac Frugal’s Bargains, Closeouts and Pic ‘N’ Save.

In 2023, Big Lost closed down 52 stores – which was followed by 13 store closures this year. But the discount homeware retailer isn’t alone, as other discount retailers are feeling the pinch. They are even more exposed to Americans cutting back on spending than stores that attract middle-class shoppers.

Lower-income customers have been cutting back after two and a half years of punishing price rises. This led to Big Lots looking for fresh financing in February, according to Bloomberg News.

Big Lots managers: Stores keep on getting stuff nobody wants to buy

But some managers of Big Lots stores are not surprised. They have complained that company’s top management in Ohio keep on sending truckloads of products that customers don’t want. Some of them have taken to the Reddit discussion platform to air out their complaints.

“In the last month, we received four of the largest trucks we have seen all year and triple the amount we normally get,” one wrote. “The warehouse is pretty much full to capacity and none of [it] is selling.”

Another posted: “Isn’t that the weirdest thing? So much stuff, but none of it is what people want. Perhaps instead of blowing our budget on cheap garbage nobody wants, corporate will look into what’s popular and will only buy that.'”

These problems for Big Lots come amid a widespread “retail apocalypse,” which is seeing brick-and-mortar stores struggle to combat rampant theft and increasingly tight margins. There have been almost 2,600 store closures so far in 2024.

Walmart recently closed three of its under-performing locations, while Rite Aid said it is shutting 27 pharmacies. Dollar stores have been hit hard too, with 99 Cents Only announcing in April it would shutter all 371 of its locations across California, Texas, Arizona and Nevada. 2 Astronauts onboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft are stranded in space – NaturalNews.com

Two astronauts onboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft are currently stranded in space.

U.S. astronauts Sunita “Suni” Williams and Barry “Butch” Wilmore have now spent more than a month in the International Space Station (ISS) as engineers work out the problems with Starliner. The two astronauts were only supposed to be on a short test flight to the ISS.

After two trips to the launchpad that ended in scrubs because of technical difficulties, such as a helium leak in the spacecraft’s propulsion system, Wilmore, 61, and Williams, 58, finally launched onboard Starliner on June 5 for what was supposed to be an eight-day mission to the ISS.

Wilmore and Williams flew to space as the first members aboard the Starliner on a 25-hour flight to the ISS.

Williams is the pilot for the flight while Wilmore is the mission’s commander. While the spacecraft is usually autonomous, the crew used the hand controller to point and aim the spacecraft for at least two hours of free-flight demonstrations.

The two astronauts successfully docked their spacecraft, nicknamed Calypso, with the ISS on June 6. They joined a crew of seven astronauts who were already onboard.

However, an announcement from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) revealed that Wilmore and Williams won’t be back on Earth until sometime in July at the earliest.

The pair’s return has been postponed to give engineers more time to troubleshoot two hardware problems that emerged on the spacecraft after launch. (Related: NASA’s historic Mars helicopter Ingenuity may have crash-landed, ending its three-year mission on Red Planet.)

NASA claims that the astronauts are safe even though they are “temporarily marooned” on the orbital outpost.

Leroy Chiao, a former NASA astronaut who spent more than half a year at the ISS from 2004 to 2005, suggested that Calypso’s technical issues “seem fairly minor.” Chiao added that both Wilmore and Williams can stay onboard the ISS “almost indefinitely if needed, so they are in no danger.”

Aside from the previously known helium leak, controllers discovered that the spacecraft’s propulsion system had sprung four more during Calypso’s flight to the ISS mission.

The inert gas is used to push propellant to the spacecraft’s reaction control system (RCS) thrusters, which are crucial for small, fine-tuned maneuvers. In addition, losing enough helium could render them useless.

While Calypso approached the ISS, five of its 28 RCS thrusters failed. The reasons remain unclear but are believed to be unrelated to the helium leak.

Wilmore and Williams discuss their mission in a live address from the ISS

Wilmore and Williams talked about the crew flight test mission in a live address from the ISS held on July 10.

NASA said the Starliner aircraft is now “cleared for return to Earth in case of an emergency on the space station.” The agency added that the ISS can easily accommodate an extended stay by Wilmore and Williams.

However, Calypso is not equipped for an extended stay on its first crewed flight.

Chiao explained that Calypso is only formally certified to dock at the station for 45 days. This means that unless it is recertified, Calypso “could only stay at ISS for a couple more weeks.” Eventually, the spacecraft would exceed this limit on the afternoon of July 20 if it remains docked to the ISS by that time.

But reports suggest that if this happens, several backup systems could be activated to help extend Calypso’s stay up to 72 days.
