McDonald’s Announces Key Plans to Curb Antibiotic Use in Beef Supply

One of the top causes of antibiotic resistance is the use of the medicines in livestock. Many factory farms feed animals antibiotics to prevent disease and promote growth. Yet, despite countless warnings that the practice fuels drug-resistant superbugs, it continues to be a serious problem. Thankfully, establishments such as McDonald’s claims to finally be taking more action against widespread antibiotic use.

In recent years, the poultry industry has made some progress in reducing unnecessary antibiotic use. In 2015, McDonald’s announced a plan to prohibit its chicken farmers from using antibiotics considered important to human health, and many other food chains soon followed, including Wendy’s., as well as KFC. In December, McDonald’s took its efforts to reduce the use of medically-important antibiotics in livestock to the next level when the company announced plans to reduce the use of antibiotics in cows that are part of the fast-food company’s global beef supply.


Bruce Feinberg, a senior director at McDonald’s Corp., who oversees global quality systems for protein and dairy products, called the plan “probably the most ambitious project that McDonald’s has ever taken on.”

McDonald’s said it will measure antibiotic use in its top 10 beef markets, including the U.S., Brazil, and New Zealand. The company will then set targets for reduction by the end of 2020. It will start reporting its progress in meeting those targets in 2022. [1] [2]

Environmentalists are more than happy to see McDonald’s taking action against the overuse of antibiotics in farm animals. [1]

In a statement, Lena Brook, interim director of food and agriculture at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), wrote:

“McDonald’s is the first major burger chain to announce a comprehensive antibiotic use reduction policy for all beef sold by its restaurants – and the largest, by far.”


According to the NRDC, some 40% of medically-important antibiotics sold in the livestock sector in the U.S. are used in the beef industry. By comparison, just 6% goes to the poultry industry. That, the NRDC says, is why “addressing overuse in beef production is critical to combat drug resistance.”

It’s tougher to remove medically-important antibiotics from livestock than it is to remove them from poultry because cattle live longer than chickens and have more chances to fall ill. [3]

Bob Smith, an Oklahoma-based cattle veterinarian for Veterinary Research and Consulting Services, explained that cattle farmers face unique challenges in reducing antibiotic use while also keeping their animals healthy, as there are few good alternatives to the medicines.

“We will need those medically important antibiotics in meat production for a long, long time. We want to use those wisely.”

But someone has to get the ball rolling, and it might as well be a monstrosity of a company like McDonald’s.


Keith Kenny, McDonald’s global vice president for sustainability, said in a statement: [2]

“McDonald’s believes antibiotic-resistance is a critical public health issue and we take seriously our unique position to use our scale for good to continue to address this challenge.”

In October, McDonald’s received a failing grade in the Chain Action Report. Produced by the Center for Food Safety (CFS), Consumer Reports (CR), Food Animal Concerns Trust (FACT), U.S. PIRG Education Fund (USPEF), Friends of the Earth (FOE), and NRDC. The report rated the top 25 fast-food chains’ antibiotic policies.

USPEF, who has been pressuring McDonald’s to phase routine antibiotic use out of its meat supply for more than 3 years, applauded the fast-food chain’s commitment.

Matthew Wellington, the consumer group’s antibiotics program director, remarked:

“The Golden Arches just raised the bar for responsible antibiotic use in meat production. McDonald’s new commitment is a promising step forward that will help preserve antibiotics for the future and that’s something we should all be happy about.”


As the biggest beef buyer to pledge to reduce antibiotic use in cattle, McDonald’s could set a new benchmark for livestock producers and other fast-food chains alike. [3]

David Wallinga, a senior health adviser for the NRDC, said:

“McDonald’s iconic position and the fact that they’re the largest single global purchaser of beef make it hugely important.”

While McDonald’s is in no way a healthy place to eat, the chain has been making strides in recent years to make their food a bit less … er, toxic? In addition to banning antibiotics in its chicken supply, the company said in 2014 that it would not be sourcing genetically modified (GM) Simplot potatoes, which are engineered to brown slower and bruise less easily than non-GMO potatoes.

Then, in 2015, McDonald’s said it would replace the high-fructose corn syrup in their hamburger buns with regular sugar, and ditch preservatives in its McNuggets, pork sausage patties, omelet-style eggs, and scrambled eggs.

Breastfed Babies Have Fewer Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria in Their Guts

Infants who are breastfed for at least 6 months have fewer antibiotic-resistant bacteria in their guts, likely because the sugars in breast milk feed “good bacteria,” which prevents the proliferation of harmful microbes, a new study shows.

It’s an important benefit of breastfeeding, as antibiotic-resistant superbugs are increasing worldwide, fueling fears that modern medicine could be wiped out if new treatments aren’t soon developed.

Researchers from Helsinki University analyzed the genes of 16 mothers and their babies over 8 months. The team sequenced the DNA of a total of 96 samples, including breast milk and feces, from the mothers and their infants.

Some Interesting Findings

Babies that were breastfed for at least 6 months had less antibiotic-resistant bacteria in their guts, compared with babies who were not breastfeed.

Lead study author Katariina Pärnäne said:

“The results suggest that early termination of breastfeeding might have negative health effects for infants … due to an increased resistance potential of the gut microbiota against certain antibiotics.”

The study also showed that mothers who received antibiotics during delivery had babies with a greater number of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in their guts. The effect was still noticeable 6 months after birth. [2]

Additionally, researchers found that breast milk contains antibiotic-resistant bacteria that gets passed on to infants via breastfeeding. Yet, breastfeeding still reduced the number of resistant bugs in the bellies of infants, suggesting that breastfeeding helps cancel out any “bad” microbes a mom might pass along. In fact, only some of the resistant bacteria the team found in infants originated from their mothers. The majority came from the environment and other people.

Pärnänen said:

“As a general rule, it could be said that all breastfeeding is for the better.

The positive effect of breastfeeding was identifiable also in infants who were given formula in addition to breast milk. Partial breastfeeding already seemed to reduce the quantity of bacteria resistant to antibiotics. Another finding was that nursing should be continued for at least the first six months of a child’s life or even longer.

We have already known that breastfeeding is all in all healthy and good for the baby, but we now discovered that it also reduces the number of bacteria resistant to antibiotics.”

Breastfeeding Provides Numerous Benefits

Breastfeeding has been shown time and time again to have a slew of benefits for babies, which is why the World Health Organization (WHO) urges mothers to breastfeed for at least 6 months.

Hugely, the practice strengthens infants’ immune systems, boosting the ability to fight infections and disease throughout childhood. In fact, the United Nations (UN) has said that if all mothers globally started solely breastfeeding their babies, it could slash the death rate for children under 5 by 13%. [3]

Despite the mountains of evidence showing the breastfeeding benefits both mother and baby, the United States has been reluctant to advise women to do so. Over the summer, U.S. delegates who gathered in Geneva for the United Nations-affiliated World Health Assembly refused to approve a resolution encouraging women to breastfeed.

American officials sought to remove language from the resolution calling on governments to “protect, promote, and support breastfeeding,” as well as another passage that called on lawmakers to stop promoting certain food products that health experts have deemed detrimental to young children.

A showdown ensued, threats were lobbed, and in the end Russia stepped in to sponsor the resolution in place of the U.S.

A Health and Human Services spokesperson said at the time:

“The resolution as originally drafted placed unnecessary hurdles for mothers seeking to provide nutrition to their children. We recognize not all women are able to breastfeed for a variety of reasons. These women should have the choice and access to alternatives for the health of their babies, and not be stigmatized for the ways in which they are able to do so.”

However, attendees suspect there was a different reason behind the U.S.’s refusal to sign onto the resolution: the baby food industry. Lobbyists from the $70 billion industry were present at the meeting, and the intensity of the Trump administration’s opposition to the resolution shocked public health officials and foreign diplomats who were accustomed to the Obama administration’s support for WHO’s longstanding policy of encouraging breastfeeding.

Infectious Bacteria Stealthily Avoid Antibiotics Through “Hibernation”

The term “superbug” refers to bacteria that have become resistant to the antibiotics normally used to get rid of them. Now, a new study suggests that the term is more fitting than scientists previously realized. It turns out that these infectious bacteria stealthily “hibernate” during antibiotic treatment, which further prevents the medications from killing the bugs. [1]

Almost all infectious bacteria develop some antibiotic-resistant traits, so a substantial fraction of bacteria survive a course of antibiotics. But a small number of bacteria, including some of the world’s most dangerous pathogens, can resist antibiotics without needing these traits.

A small portion of pathogenic bacteria can survive a course of antibiotics by lying dormant until the danger passes. They simply hibernate, according to researchers from the University of Copenhagen. Once a person finishes taking their medication, these bacteria “wake up” and go back to being nasty, disease-causing bugs.

Professor Kenn Gerdes of the University of Copenhagen’s Department of Biology said:

“We studied E. coli bacteria from urinary tract infections that had been treated with antibiotics and were supposedly under control. In time, the bacteria re-awoke and began to spread once again.”

Antibiotics typically work by targeting a bacteria cell’s ability to grow, which means that a hibernating bacterium remains untouched by the drugs. It is not technically resistant.

Gerdes explained:

“It is temporarily tolerant because it stops growing, which allows it to survive the effects of an antibiotic.”

It’s still a mystery why some bacteria go into a dormant stage while others don’t, considering hibernating bacteria share the same genetic characteristics as other bacteria in a given population.

“Antibiotics are usually directed at the bacterial growth processes. Genetically, these bacteria have all the same features of the other bacteria in the population. It is rare and affects only 1 in 10,000 to 1 million cells. That makes it hard to investigate.” [2]

The researchers found that an enzyme in dormant bacteria is responsible for putting bacteria into a dormant state, which allows them to avoid being attacked. But right now it’s anyone’s guess as to why this enzyme gets triggered in the rare bacterium. [1]

Gerdes said:

“The discovery of this enzyme is a good foundation for the future development of a substance capable of combatting dormant bacteria cells.”

Much more research – and funding – is needed to understand why some bacteria become dormant, but it will hopefully lead to more effective antibiotics in the future.

Gerdes said:

“The enzyme triggers a ‘survival program’ that almost all disease-causing bacteria deploy to survive in the wild and resist antibiotics in the body. Developing an antibiotic that targets this general program would be a major advance.”

The study is published in the journal Science Signaling.

New “Nightmare” Bacteria has Been Popping up Around the U.S.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said earlier this year that more than 200 rare “nightmare” antibiotic-resistant genes were found during testing in 2017.

Dr. Anne Schuchat, principal deputy director of the CDC, expressed shock at the findings, saying:

“I was surprised by the numbers we found. Two million Americans get infections from antibiotic resistance, and 23,000 die from those infections each year.”

The authors write in the report that the bacteria haven’t spread widely, but they found a variety of resistant germs in every state.

The agency tested for 2 of the most well-known superbugs: carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), and carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CRPA) bacteria. [2]

What the CDC Testing Found

The CDC tested 5,776 isolates of antibiotic-resistant germs from hospitals and nursing homes and discovered that about 1 in 4 had a gene that helped spread its resistance, while 221 bacteria contained “an especially rare resistance gene,” according to Schuchat.

Follow-up screening revealed that nearly 1 in every 10 contacts also tested positive. Those individuals had “silent” infections. Schuchat explained this means that “the unusual resistance has spread to other patients and could have continued spreading if left undetected.” It’s anyone’s guess as to how frequently asymptomatic patients spread the disease to uninfected people. The rare genes were discovered in isolates gathered in 27 states from infection samples, including pneumonia, bloodstream infections, and urinary tract infections (UTIs). [1]

Doctors and scientists are working to halt the spread of antibiotic-resistant superbugs before they even start, comparing them to a rapidly-consuming wildfire that’s difficult to bring under control. [3]

As part of the effort, the CDC recently established the Antibiotic Resistance Laboratory Network (ARLN), which consists of labs across the country that test patients’ samples for highly resistant-bacteria and track antibiotic-resistant bugs as they pop up.

Fortunately, Schuchat said, the CDC’s aggressive strategy to identify, track, and contain the germs has been largely successful and appears to have stopped their spread.

The agency’s strategy involves rapidly identifying superbugs at facilities, assessing those facilities for gaps in infection control, screening other patients to identify any “silent” carriers, and continuing these steps until they can put on lock on further transmission of the germs.

A mathematical model utilized by the scientists shows that implementing this strategy could prevent as many as 1,600 new CRE infections in 3 years. That’s a 76% drop in cases.

Schuchat said:

“We need to do more, and we need to do it faster and earlier with each new antibiotic-resistance threat.”

Yes, some very big claims are being made here, and when we have been told for so many years that diseases are only prevented by vaccines, this may be incredulous to believe.

We can look at history and see how people lived back in the 1700 – 1900’s, when they did die very young. Many infants died at birth and those that did survive, often did not make it to adulthood.

Regarding small pox, it’s interesting to know that London’s first public green, Victoria Park, was developed due to fears diseases would start spreading out from the slums (where the inhabitants did not get much fresh air) to the areas where the wealthy lived.  “A park would diminish the annual deaths by several thousands, and add several years to the lives of the entire population,” claimed sanitary reformer William Farr.

I don’t think anyone would deny, that those poor, cramped and dirty living conditions would not have been at all ‘healthy’.

Oregano oil is also a mucolytic, and is brilliant at breaking up mucous, which is one of the most annoying afflictions of having a cold or flu.  It therefore helps clear sinuses and breaks up the mucous – rather than suppressing it – in a chest cough.

I have personally had phenomenal results with using oregano oil this flu season and I was one of the very few people who I know of, who simply did not get the flu or even a bad cold.  The trick is taking the right kind and taking it often throughout those days where you feel like something is kicking in.  If the symptoms crop up again, then continue to take the oil until the symptoms goes away.

Travel Vaccines Not Needed When Oregano Oil Keeps Tropical Diseases At Bay

Many people who don’t vaccinate themselves or their children in first world countries, often do so when they are travelling to third world countries, thinking that this is their only guarantee of not succumbing to disease when they are travelling.  Travel vaccines are often given alongside several other types and this can be a very big knock to the immune system, and if anything could make one more susceptible to illness whilst away.

However, if you took wild oregano oil daily, it may be excellent for keeping you resistant to illness.  Wild oregano oil is also very good for treating diarrhoea and keeping food poisoning at bay. It has been shown to destroy e.coli, strep and salmonella. The FDA even published research in the Journal Of Food Protection (1999)

Oregano Oil  Is Anti-malarial 

Malaria is a huge issue globally.  It is estimated that approximately 212 million cases of malaria, with close to 430,000 deaths occurred in 2015, with African countries suffering the most.  Common treatment for malaria is with very strong drugs to kill the parasite that mosquito’s can carry. These drugs have risks,  (including causing heart issues and death) and patients are recommended to be screened (some should have blood tests) before treatment but it’s highly unlikely this is being done throughout the third world, so it may be a fair question to ask, could these drugs be causing deaths in numbers greater than what we are told?  You can also experience bad side effects from anti-malarial drugs. They are also being linked to causing depression.

It’s interesting to know that Oregano oil and it’s compounds showed anti-malarial qualities, which makes sense because it’s a proven anti-parasitic substance.   For malaria, neem oil also has shown impressive results in the treatment of malaria.

In the third world, treatment for malaria is often with nothing, or with the malarial drugs.  However, perhaps it would be much more effective, cheaper and less risky to use some of these natural oils that have far more of a positive effect with less side effects.

Beware Oregano Oil Is Not Always Good Quality

There are many brands of oregano oil, but sadly they are not always what you pay for. Many are now being grown with GMO method, it is believed up to 30% of oils on the market are, so you really have to source a wild crafted brand.  There are some studies showing that oregano oil can harm the stomach, liver and heart, but this was  NOT from a genuine, wild, edible source of oregano oil.  Anything that is not 100% from nature is not the kind you should use.

Myths Regarding Infant Use Of Wild Oregano Oil

Unfortunately there are myths floating around the internet often even by herbalists and naturopaths, that oregano oil can’t be used on children under the age of 7. This is only partly true, in that it’s all about the type and quality of oil that is used.  If an essential oil is not pure, has been produced with GMO methods, then of course, it is not safe for children to use. However, if it is a true edible spice oil, like that of oreganol p73, then it is highly recommended to be used for many illnesses, even on babies 6 months and up.

I asked world-renowned oregano pioneer Dr Cass Ingram, if he felt that children under the age of 7 should not use oregano oil:

The spice oil oregano, the true wild spice-source, high-mountain grown, is safe for all ages and is surely safe for both topical use and in tiny amounts internal use for one year-olds-plus. It has been used, traditionally, in Turkey for respiratory in children for centuries.

As long the original Oreganol P73 is used, it is acceptable, safe, and is listed by the federal government, US, as GRAS (generally recognised as safe).

I hope that clears up the rumour that oregano oil should not be used in children. I feel that many children are missing out on its amazing benefits because of this rumour.

It’s important to also remember, that we have a medical system that says its recommended to give children many doses of antibiotics, regular doses of Tylenol, and of course, that its okay to give many multiple doses of toxic vaccines at once.  They never discuss the long-term effects of these on our children.

Remember: there have been NO deaths from effects of oregano oil so I hope that this puts the use of it on infants and children into perspective.

Guide:  How To Use Oregano Oil 

It’s vital to know how to use the oil for it to be its most effective. Here is a guide, written by Dr Cass Ingram for you to follow:

Children – Age 6 months – 2 years

  • 1 drop of wild crafted oregano oil in milk or juice, once a day (kids may not like the taste, in this case try other methods as listed below)
  • can be used like this for 1 – 10 days, but do NOT exceed 10 days of use
  • for children with chest congestion, cold or fever, rub oil of oregano on the bottom of the feet at bedtime.  Cover feet with socks (2-3 drops per foot)

Children – Age 2 – 5 years

  • 1 drop of oregano oil in milk or juice (or can be mixed with honey on a spoon to cover the taste) once per day with a meal.
  • kids over the age of 2 can use this for more than 10 days
  • kids with cold or fever, rub oregano oil on bottom of feet at bedtime, 4 drops per foot.
  • for chest congestion, cold or fever rub 3 drops of oregano oil and 3 drops of rosemary oil to a teaspoon of carrier oil and rub over the chest and throat area. Be careful child does not rub the oil into their eyes. It can sting!

Children – Age 6 – 10 years

  • 1-3 drops of oregano oil in juice once per day, can be used for any number of days.
  • for cold or fever, rub 3 drops of oregano oil on bottom of feet at bedtime
  • for chest congestion, cold or fever,  rub 3-5 drops of oregano oil with 3-5 drops of rosemary into a teaspoon of carrier oil and rub over chest and throat area.

Children – Age 10 years and older

  • 2 drops of oregano oil in juice or under the tongue, 3 times a day
  • for chest congestion cold or fever rub oregano oil under the feet chest and throat area (5 drops of oregano oil & 5 drops of rosemary oil with 1 teaspoon of carrier oil)

I make my own rubbing oil that I use on both of my children, as a preventive and also when they are suffering from colds etc. I use it at least twice a day when they are ill. Because of the strong smell of oregano oil, it is a good idea to add other organic essential oils like lavender to make the scent much more pleasant to children.  As stated previously, be very careful of your children getting any oil on their fingers as they can then put in their eyes which will burn.

Adults can use higher doses for themselves, and I would consult the book The Cure Is In The Cupboard for recommendations of how much to use.
