(Neuroscience News) Researchers have developed a more accurate method of measuring bisphenol A (BPA) levels in humans and found that exposure to the endocrine-disrupting chemical is far higher than previously assumed.
(Russel Davis) Bisphenol A (BPA), a synthetic chemical widely used in manufacturing plastic products, has long been associated with a host of adverse health conditions. BPA is classified as an endocrine disruptor and is tied to various diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and abnormal liver function. Experts have looked into using chemical substitutes such as Fluorene-9-bisphenol (BHPF) in hopes of minimizing BPA exposure, but such a move proves to be futile according to new research.
(Anna Hunt) It’s common knowledge, these days, that the plastic ingredient bisphenol A, or BPA, can be harmful to your health. Although we don’t technically consume plastic, BPA present in food packaging can leach into our food and water. When consumed in trace amounts, it can affect hormone production, disrupt the endocrine system, and even lead to infertility.
Bisphenol-A (BPA), a chemical found in plastics that mimics the female hormone estrogen in the body, has been banned in baby bottles, sippy cups, and the lining of cans of formula since 2012 due to public outcry and toxicity research. Since then, ‘safer’ BPA alternatives have been used in products, but a new study adds onto growing evidence showing that BPA-free alternatives may not be as safe as consumers think.
In the study, BPA alternatives not only decreased sperm counts in mice, but the decrease led to less-viable eggs.
While more research is needed to determine if the findings can be replicated in humans, the authors believe BPA alternatives likely have similar effects in people.
BPA: A Dangerous, Ubiquitous Chemical
BPA has been used in food and beverage packaging since the 1960’s. The chemical is specifically used to make hard, clear plastic called polycarbonate that is found in the protective lining of some metal food and drink cans. BPA can leach into food from plastic containers, especially if they are old or damaged – including from being microwaved.
In fact, BPA is still so prevalent that detectable levels of the chemical were found in 93% of more than 2,500 urine samples taken from the U.S., according to data from the 2003-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). (Yeah, the data is a bit old.)
Despite the fact that BPA has been linked to everything from asthma to early puberty and breast cancer, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has only banned the substance in baby bottles, sippy cups, and infant formula packaging. It is still widely used in reusable water bottles, plastic plates, grocery receipts, canned goods, and even some dental sealants. 
The agency states on its website:
“Studies pursued by FDA’s National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR) have shown no effects of BPA from low-dose exposure.”
The problem is that because BPA is so ubiquitous, those low-dose exposures can add up over time.
There is a laundry list of BPA alternatives that manufacturers have developed in recent years: BPS, BPF, BPAF, BPZ, BPP, and BHPF, just to name a few.
All of these chemicals have one thing in common: They all have “BP” in their names. That is because they all share the same basic chemical structure of a bisphenol. Each new version only has slight differences.
The latest study shows that the common BPA replacements BPS, BPF, BPAF, and diphenyl sulphone can interfere with “the very, very, very, very earliest part of making eggs and sperm,” said researcher Patricia Hunt, a geneticist at Washington State University.
Both mice and humans normally receive 1 copy of genetic material from each parent, then splice together bits of each to form the chromosome they pass on to their children. Hunt and her colleagues found that BPA and its alternatives disrupt the process in a way that could eventually lead to lower sperm counts in males and poor egg quality in females. And those changes can be passed on to future generations.
Researchers are concerned about the effects of BPA alternatives in humans, which largely remain a mystery.
“They look a lot like BPA. It stands to reason that they’re going to behave a lot like BPA.”
Leonardo Trasande, director of the division of environmental pediatrics at NYU Langone Health, who was not involved in the research, agreed, adding:
“It speaks to the reality we need to regulate chemicals, not 1 by 1, but in a class – in a way that allows us to tackle compounds that function with similar structure.”
(Tracey Watson) For some time now, mothers have been made aware of the dangers of Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical used in many types of containers, including baby bottles. BPA is used to harden plastics, prevent contamination of foods, and stop cans from rusting. In recent years, several studies have confirmed that BPA affects endocrine function (hormonal balance) in animals and humans, and new moms have been warned to avoid baby bottles that contain this chemical and to take other steps like not boiling polycarbonate bottles or heating them in the microwave.
Bisphenol A, or BPA, is an endocrine disrupting chemical that is ubiquitous within our society. It was removed from baby bottles, sippy cups, and most cans of baby formula a number of years ago. But a recent study found that a lot of food packaging still contains the gender-bending substance.
Recently, the Center for Environmental Health tested more than 250 cans purchased at supermarkets and dollar stores for BPA in California, Idaho, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Virginia. Most of the cans were purchased at Kroger, Albertsons/Safeway, Dollar Tree and 99 Cents Only.
Nearly 40% of the containers were found to contain the chemical. And while that’s less than 2 years ago, when it was 67%, it’s not exactly a small amount. 
The study found that 36% of Albertson’s, and 33% of Kroger’s “private label” food cans tested positive for BPA.
Charles Margulis of the Center for Environmental Health said:
“It’s still much too high. We need to get it down to zero.” 
BPA is used in the lining of cans, and some research indicates that low levels of it can seep into food.
According to the FDA, the current levels of BPA in food are safe. However, California recently added the substance to its Proposition 65 list as a chemical known to cause reproductive toxicity.
“BPA is known to cause birth defects, and it’s also linked to breast cancer, obesity, and many other serious health problems.”
Those facing the greatest health risks from BPA exposure may be low-income citizens who often rely on canned foods. The study revealed that more than half of the cans purchased at 99 Cents Only contained BPA. Past studies show that low-come communities have higher levels of BPA in their bodies than the rest of the population. 
“In many areas, dollar stores are the only places can go for fruits and vegetables.” 
His advice is simple: buy fresh organic produce whenever possible.
BPA is a synthetic hormone which mimics the female hormone estrogen, earning the chemical its reputation as a “gender-bender.” It has been associated with infertility, breast and reproductive system changes, and early puberty. 
Aside from hormonal and reproductive problems, BPA may also cause obesity, diabetes, behavioral changes in children, and resistance to chemotherapy treatments.
How to Reduce BPA Exposure
It’s virtually impossible to completely avoid BPA, but there are things you can do to reduce your family’s exposure:
Purchase baby formula in plastic, glass, or other non-metal containers. Choose powdered formula whenever possible, since the packaging contains less BPA, and the powder is diluted with fresh water. If you must buy your baby liquid formula, look for brands sold in plastic or glass containers, or one’s that explicitly say “BPA Free.”
