New Moon In Capricorn: Power Struggles, Intensity & Renewal

We are having a New Moon in Capricorn on January 13th throughout most of the world and on the night of the 12th in Central to Western North America. This is initiating a 29.5 day lunar cycle and new wave of energy for the coming month; however, the astrological configurations mentioned in this article will be more prominent over the following two weeks. This cycle will include a Full Moon in Leo on January 28th/29th.

Capricorn season began on the December 21st solstice, just over three weeks prior to this lunation, and will end on January 19th/20th when Aquarius season begins. However, this New Moon will carry some of the Capricorn energies into the earlier part of Aquarius season.

This is a good period of working with and co-creating with the energies of this sign. Capricorn is associated with structure, ambitions, achieving goals, mastery, business, career, social status, responsibilities, duty, authority, governance, and hard work. It is cautious, worldly, conservative, and pragmatic. As an Earth sign, it has the qualities of practicality, reliability, solidity and being grounded. This element is very much orientated around the physical and material world. Negatively, Capricorn energy can be too serious, cynical, cold, controlling, and unrelenting.

New Moon Conjunct Pluto

This New Moon is aligned with Pluto which is also in Capricorn. This energy can be strong willed, focused, calculated, strategic, secretive, transformational, probing, deep, regenerating, sexual, cleansing, purging, and evolutionary. It can also be destructive, heavy, controlling, intense, subversive, obsessive, compulsive, jealous, power seeking, authoritarian, abusive, violent, manipulative, and dark.

Pluto rules investments, taboos, transmutation, hidden matters, repressed feelings, shadows, psychoanalysis, and the underworld. It is associated with power struggles, conspiracies, viruses, death, fears as well as fearlessness. This Plutonian energy will be strongly felt during the New Moon and in the two days following it, but it will still affect the entire Lunar Cycle.

Pluto has been in Capricorn since 2008 and will be there until 2024. Collectively, this is a period of major changes affecting government, financial structures, and business in a big way. This has been more obvious in recent years as Saturn, the Lunar South Node, and Jupiter have all joined Pluto in the same sign. This will continue to be a big theme over the remaining years of Pluto in Capricorn and beyond. We also recently had a Great Conjunction in Aquarius on December 21st which also reflects changes affecting society in a big way over a long period.

This Lunar Cycle can really trigger the collective impact of this energy especially considering the current landscape. To learn more about all of this, I recommend reading my Pluto in Capricorn article from 2017 here and my more recent Great Conjunction article here.

Mars Conjunct Uranus In Taurus Square Jupiter & Saturn in Aquarius

The action oriented Mars recently changed signs into Taurus on January 6th/7th and has since been approaching Uranus, the planet of surprises and rebellion, in the same sign. They are both applying squares to Saturn and Jupiter in Aquarius which are still in close proximity with each other.

During this New Moon, from January 12th-14th, Mars is in a square with Saturn which is the first exact aspect made between these four planets. Our actions can be faced with obstacles, delays, resistance, or limitations. Conflicts around boundaries or restrictions can play out. Doing tasks may require extra patience and caution.

As this is finishing, Jupiter will be going into an exact square with Uranus from January 14th to the 19th. This energy can be freedom seeking, rebellious, scattered, idealistic, or even risk taking. It could be good for exploring, learning, education, or expansiveness around things that are new to us, unconventional, technological, scientific, progressive, or metaphysical.

Mars then makes its exact conjunction with Uranus from the 19th to the 21st while it is finishing its square Jupiter. It can really crank up the energies mentioned above and this energy can also be impulsive, erratic, experimental, disruptive, surprising, irritable, and quick tempered.

From the 21st until the 24th, Mars will then be in exact square with Jupiter. We may feel like doing things in a big way but it’s important to be cautious around what we do because we can more easily apply ourselves in a way that is overextending, overestimating, or overlooking of important things. Conflicts around beliefs, opinions, judgements, and principles can play out.

During the later part of this period, the Sun will be in a conjunction with Saturn from the 23rd to 24th. This can have a serious tone, and perhaps the need to be realistic, cautious, orderly, disciplined, committed, or responsible, may come up. Following this, the Sun will be making aspects to Jupiter, Uranus, and Mars in the last week of January and into the first few days of February which can trigger some of the energies mentioned earlier in this section.

The combination of all of these planets in close proximity to aspects with each other throughout January can be good for applying ourselves in new ways that are congruent with changes that are happening personally or collectively. However, it can also be a time of anger, impulsiveness, and rebelliousness towards obstacles, restrictions, opinions, beliefs, authority figures, as well as other recent or upcoming developments, circumstances, or changes.

Venus Square Chiron &  Trine Uranus, Mercury Entering pre-Retrograde Shadow

Venus in Capricorn is in a square with Chiron in Aries at the time of this New Moon and in the day leading up to it.  This can bring up wounds, blockages, negative patterns, or can reflect themes around healing, holistic perception, or perhaps solutions when it comes to love, our social life, friends, pleasures, values, or monetary issues.

Venus is also in a trine with Uranus in Taurus which is strongest in the day and half following this New Moon. It can bring a new, stimulating, unusual, exciting, inspiring, liberating, unexpected, or unique energy around our relations with others.  This can also reflect surprises, positive changes, or freeing type of developments around financial matters. In some cases it can be good for exploring new ways of making money that can be innovative, online, metaphysical, or technologically oriented.

On January 15th, Mercury in Aquarius will be entering the shadow period of its retrograde that will be beginning on January 30th/31st and last until February 20th/21st. It can increasingly start to feel like it’s retrograde during these weeks leading up to it as delays, technological/mechanical problems, mistakes, miscommunications, misunderstandings, or other complications can be more probable than in the previous six weeks.

Certain developments, interactions, connections, or issues that occur at this time can be connected to how this retrograde will affect us in February through its adjusting and perceptive changing qualities. There can be something we are not seeing clearly that needs to unfold throughout the upcoming retrograde and post-retrograde process. I will be writing a separate article on this, you can join my mailing list here to ensure that you receive it.

Making Intentions & Things To Consider

What changes do you need to make when it comes to your ambitions, career, structures, or business matters? What can you do to make your profession more congruent with a changing world? What are you fighting for and what can you do to be more calculated, effective, and persuasive? What kind of strategies can you employ to help you achieve your goals? Do you need to be more innovative when it comes to making money? What area of your life is calling for some sort of purging, cleansing, empowerment, and/or transformation?

These are just some examples of what to consider or focus your intentions on at this time. However, it is good to reflect on anything else that is coming up for you. It is generally best to make any intentions within the first 24 hours following a New Moon. The exact moment it will occur is 5:00am Universal Time on January 13th. Blue Moon In Taurus: Surprises & Obstacles

We are having a Full Moon in Taurus on October 31st for the majority of the world, and in the early hours of November 1st in New Zealand and some Australian time zones. It will appear the brightest on the night of the 30th for most of the Americas, and on the night of the 31st elsewhere. This is the peak of the Lunar cycle that began with  New Moon In Libra on October 16th/17th, as some of the themes of that lunation are still in effect.

This is the second Full Moon of October for the majority of the world, making it a calendar ‘Blue Moon’.  Although it is not super rare, it is still something that only happens every 2-3 years or every30 Full Moons on average. We associate Blue Moons with rare occurrences and happenings, hence the phrase ‘once in a Blue Moon’. I personally find this to have some truth to it  and I would expect this to be the case for this one considering the planetary configurations.

The energies of a Full Moon are strongest in the days surrounding it yet its astrological configurations also play a part over the following two weeks. You may start to see its themes slowly build up after the New Moon prior.

Full Moons are a period in which we feel a push-pull between two opposing signs, in this case being the Moon in Taurus and the Sun in Scorpio. It can play out as either a conflict, an integration, or some sort of dynamic playing out between the energies of both signs. The Moon reflects the expression of feeling and emotion while the Sun reflects the expression of ego and conscious self.

We may feel this opposition happening individually within us and/or we can also experience it play out around us with some people (or circumstances) expressing the Taurus side and others expressing the Scorpio side. In some cases, Full Moons can also reflect/trigger some sort of change or release.

Taurus is an Earth sign ruled by Venus. It is associated with values, worth, the material world, sensuality, money, food/substances, security, beauty, art, and nature. It is physically oriented, practical, thorough, and realistic. It is like a rock; slow, grounded, and solid. Negatively, Taurus energy can be lazy, habitual, greedy, possessive, stubborn, materialistic, overly self-indulgent, and very slow.

Scorpio is a Water sign traditionally ruled by Mars and associated with Pluto. It is about power, transformation, intensity, sexuality, passion, regeneration, hidden matters, depth, as well as shared or owed resources and money. It is emotionally oriented, intuitive, primal, complex, calculated, mysterious, and is associated with shadows and the unconscious. Negatively Scorpio energy can be vengeful, manipulative, compulsive, obsessive, and fearful.

Full Moon Conjunct Uranus

This Full Moon is aligned with Uranus which brings a whole other dynamic to the equation which can also override some of the Taurean themes of stability, routine, and rigidity. Uranus is unpredictable and can bring surprises, shake ups, breakthroughs, sudden happenings, rebellion, and sometimes even accidents.

It is revolutionary, innovative, scientific, metaphysical, non-conforming, awakening, insightful, exciting, and bring new experiences. Uranus is associated with originality, freedom, change, and revolution. It can also reflect losses and separations.

The unusualness or Uranian energy coincides well with ‘Blue Moon’ themes and can be viewed as a planetary representation of a Blue Moon experience. The Uranian themes mentioned here may also be in conflict with the Scorpio themes/energies mentioned in the previous section.

Taurus Ruler Venus in Libra, Opposite Chiron

Venus, the ruler of this Full Moon, is in its other home sign Libra at this time. When placed here there can be an emphasis on balance, equality, harmony, diplomacy, compromising, beauty, and art when it comes to love, relationships, social matters, values,  pleasures, finances, and aesthetics.

It is moving towards an opposition to Chiron in Aries, which is strongest on November 1st. Our wounds, pain, blockages, or negative patterns can come up in/through our social or romantic interactions. Imbalances or complications around integration can also play out in our relationships. Insecurities around beauty, appearance, likeability, or attractiveness, may be triggered. Issues around values or finances may be a theme as well.

The best way to utilize this period is to reflect on these areas from a personal development and self-growth perspective. Whatever comes up at this time can be trying to show us something about ourselves, or others, that can be improved upon.

Mercury Going Direct Soon, Mars Near End of Retrograde, Jupiter Conjunct Pluto

Mercury has been retrograde since October 13th/14th, in Scorpio and Libra, which will be ending on November 3rd/4th. It will slowly begin to move forward again over the following days and gradually pick up speed throughout much of November. From November 6th onward into the subsequent weeks, we can begin to have more clarity and a better sense of how to proceed in certain areas of our lives that have been affected by the retrograde.

As Mercury transitions its motion, it will be in  Libra and in a square with Saturn while close to the benefic star Spica. This echoes similar themes and energies of the previous New Moon. This can reflect obstacles, complications, restrictions, struggles, and emphasizes the stopped energy of a stationary Mercury. However its conjunction with Spica can also reflect fortunate circumstances as well, which can be coinciding with the Saturnian energy mentioned.

Mars in Aries is in its final two weeks of being retrograde which began in the 2nd week of September. It will go stationary direct on November 13th/14th. At this time and on the days before and after, we can expect Mars energies to be really strong in some ways. Anger, aggression, passion, or sexual expression, can be amplified.

We may feel like we have to take some sort of action, but potentially can be faced with things preventing that due to the stationary position. We may also feel a build up of pent up energy that may need to get released over the following weeks, reflective of Mars gradually picking up speed in forward motion.

As Mars is in its stationary and transitioning phase, Jupiter will make its final conjunction with Pluto in Capricorn. This energy will be present from November 5th-19th and peak from November 10th-16th. It can be a time of revealing hidden matters, shadows, and darkness. Jupiter’s expansiveness can affect Pluto themes and energies such as fear, abuse, revenge, power dynamics, transformation, destruction, death, rebirth, sexual desire, or obsessions. For some people, this can manifest as financial benefit.

I recently did a video talking about the upcoming US election and mentioned how this energy ties into it. You can watch it below.

Things To Consider

Do you feel like you need to make a radical change in an area of your life? Is there anything you need to liberate yourself from? How can you better tap into your authenticity? Is there anything that you want to experiment with? What has come up for you in recent weeks, especially from October 24th-26th? How should you take that into consideration in figuring out how you need to proceed? What are your true values and how do they differ or mesh with the values of others in your life? What are your relationships showing you about what needs to be improved upon?

These are just some examples of themes that could come up during this period; however, there may be other variations of this energy playing out as well.  If you wish to do any sort of intentional release connected to what has come up at this Full Moon, it is best to do so anytime over the two weeks following when it is waning. The exact moment of this Full Moon is at 2:49pm Universal Time on October 31st. You can click here to see what that is in your time zone.

New Moon In Libra: Seeking Balance

We are having a New Moon in Libra on October 16th throughout most of the world and in the morning of the 17th in the East. This is initiating a 29.5 day lunar cycle and new wave of energy for the coming month; however, the astrological configurations mentioned in this article will be more prominent over the following two weeks. This cycle will include a Full Moon in Taurus on October 31st/November 1st.

This New Moon occurs days after we have reached the halfway point of Mars’ retrograde in Aries which concludes mid-November. It is also days after Mercury began its retrograde which is currently in Scorpio and moving backwards into Libra before it moves forward again post November 3rd. Both of these planets being retrograde at the same time reflects a period of significant adjustments pertaining to how we express these planets, the signs they are in, and how they are configured to our individual astrological blueprints (natal chart).

Generally Mars retrogrades are a period in which the circumstances, developments, and our inner guidance is helping to facilitate a shift in how we apply ourselves and take action in specific areas of our lives. This is something that happens approximately every two years, which is less frequent and usually more significant than Mercury’s retrogrades. I wrote separate articles for each of them, you can read more about Mars Retrograde here and Mercury Retrograde here.

Libra season began on September 22nd/23rd, just over three weeks prior to this Lunation, and will end on October 22nd/23rd when Scorpio season begins. However, this New Moon (along with other planets) will still carry some of its Libra themes into the first week of Scorpio season prior to the Full Moon.

This is a good period of working with and co-creating with the energies of this sign. As an Air sign, Libra is socially and mentally oriented. Ruled by Venus, it is associated with relating, relationships, charm, harmony, compromising, art, creativity, and aesthetics. There is a big focus on others. Libra is also diplomatic as it seeks to find balance, equality, fairness, and common ground.

Negatively, Libra can be overly codependent, passive aggressive, superficial, insincere,  indecisive, vain, and judgemental. Although this sign is about politeness and harmony, retaliation can be triggered when imbalance and unfairness is perceived. Libra is also associated with people-pleasing which can have either positive or negative implications.

New Moon Aligned With Spica, In A Hard T-Square Pattern

This New Moon has an interesting mix of energies. It is tightly aligned with the fixed star Spica which is known to be the most benefic and fortunate star. However, it can be tricky to interpret how a star’s energy can manifest, especially in this case considering other astrological factors that are quite different.

Like Libra, Spica is connected to art and creativity, but also has spiritual, scientific, and inventive qualities. It is associated with harvest season and represents the ‘gifts of harvest’, both metaphorically and literally. However, it can also reflect unfruitfulness (depending on other variables) and injustice to innocence according to legendary astrologer Vivian Robson.

This New Moon is opposite Mars Retrograde in Aries which are both in a T-square with Jupiter, Pluto, and Saturn in Capricorn. The Sun has been in an opposition with Mars in the week before this New Moon (peaking on the 13th/14th) which has been a significant part of the Mars retrograde process in influencing how we assert ourselves.

However, this energy is also configured into this New Moon and can play out as conflicts (internally or externally with others), impulsiveness, aggression, anger, competitiveness, or sexual tension. Mars in Aries wants to assert individuality, ego, personal needs, and self identity while the New Moon in Libra is looking for consideration, common ground, diplomacy, equality, and fairness.

This opposition in a square to Jupiter, Pluto, and Saturn in Capricorn can reflect power struggles, obstacles, and issues pertaining to beliefs, opinions, and perspectives. Saturn has the most power as it is strongly placed in its home sign (ruling Jupiter and Pluto) as the Sun and Moon are also moving towards a square (strong on the 18th/19th) with it while separating from the aspects to the other planets in this configuration. This calls for a need to be realistic, cautious, practical, disciplined, structured, or orderly. The combination of this and all the retrograde energy can call for some sort of refinement.

Venus Opposing Neptune, Trine Planets In Capricorn, and Square The Lunar Nodes

The ruler of this New Moon, Venus, has been in Virgo in the previous two weeks and will be there until October 27th/28th. Venus ruled areas of values, love, relationships, friends, social life, pleasures, money, aesthetics, beauty, art, taste, sensuality, desires, and attractiveness can be expressed in ways that are practical, conscientious, discerning, picky, detailed, organized, analytical, health oriented, productive, efficient, adaptable, or fault finding/surfacing.

At the time of this New Moon, Venus is moving towards an opposition to Neptune and trine to Jupiter which have been in a sextile over the previous weeks. This energy is strong from October 18th-19th and can be good for creative or artistic efforts as well as social interactions that have spiritual, compassionate, broad, or philosophical themes. It can also reflect expansiveness, growth, morals, optimism, idealism, along with confusion, deception, escapism, and delusion affecting Venus areas of life (as mentioned in above paragraph).

Mars retrograde will also be in a square with Jupiter at that time which could also reflect conflicts around beliefs, opinions, and judgements. Excessiveness, overconfidence, and spreading ourselves out too much can also play out. Mercury retrograde will be moving towards an opposition to Uranus (peaks 19th/20th) which can make it harder to focus and can bring disruption, changes to plans, and perhaps communication problems.

Venus approaches a square to the Lunar Nodes on October 20th/21st. We may be reflecting on the past and future, or perhaps at a crossroads, when it comes to relationships and values. Venus is then in a trine with Pluto (October 21st/22nd) which can bring an empowering, deep, intense, or insightful energy to things associated with Venus. Following this, it moves to a trine with Saturn (October 24th/25th) which can have a committing, strengthening, supportive, responsible, practical, or stabilizing effect on these areas.

Making Intentions & Things To Consider

What can you do to improve how you relate with others? Is there a need to compromise, find common ground, or achieve fairness and equality? What has come up for you in the week leading up to this New Moon? Should you change the way you assert your needs or individuality? Are circumstances in your life pushing you to think differently about something? What can you learn from any obstacles that have been coming up in your life? Is there anything that needs to be restrained?

These are just some examples of what to consider or focus your intentions on at this time. However, it is good to reflect on anything else that is coming up for you. It is generally best to make any intentions within the first 24 hours following a New Moon. The exact moment it will occur is 7:31pm Universal Time on October 16th. You can click here to see what that is in your time zone.

Mercury Retrograde In Scorpio & Libra: Aligning Shared Values

Mercury begins another retrograde process on October 13th/14th  which will last until Nov 3rd/4th. This is when it appears to be moving backwards from our earth based vantage point due to the positioning of the Earth and Mercury in each of their orbits around the Sun. This one is occurring primarily in Scorpio and partially in Libra.

In the weeks (and especially days) leading up to it, it can already start to feel like a retrograde and some of its themes can get seeded. This happens because Mercury slows down (again from our vantage point) and travels in the part of sky it will be returning to after the retrograde begins. This is known as the ‘pre-shadow’ period which began on September 23rd/24th.

This retrograde is happening while Mars is also retrograde which began on September 9th/10th and will last until November 13th/14th. The retrogrades of these planets along with Venus are much more significant and noticeable then those of all the other planets which have further orbits. This is because they are less frequent and are classified as ‘personal’ or ‘inner’ planets. When retrograde they are in a sign (or two signs) for a significantly extended amount of time in comparison to the signs before or after.

Both of these retrogrades reflect a period of adjustments pertaining to their own energies and those of the signs they are in. However, they are both connected as they are happening simultaneously and Mercury is in Scorpio which is a sign that is traditionally ruled by Mars. Another interesting thing is that Mercury begins this retrograde during the peak, or halfway point, of Mars Retrograde when it opposes the Sun. To learn more about this Mars retrograde, I recommend reading my article about it here.

If you have read my previous Mercury Retrograde articles, the remainder of this section and the following one are nearly the same and you can skip to the third section if you don’t want to re-read all the general themes associated with these periods. The other parts are more specific to this edition of it.

Mercury retrograde is known for the problematic effects it often has on communication technology, transactions, motor vehicles, anything with moving parts, and commuting in general. Some people even get headaches near the beginning of it. We could experience some challenges, misunderstandings, and errors around our communications, numbers/details, and commerce, as well as changes, cancellations, or delays in our schedules.

Sometimes these issues could occur when we are excessively analytical without tuning into our internal guidance. Depending on how we flow with it and other variables, we may not always experience these surface level inconveniences, or they could just be minor irritants.

Mercury Retrograde can also be a good time to revisit or redo tasks, projects, ideas, or anything else that was initiated in the past. It can give us a different perspective or shift in thinking that can help us to approach these things in ways we wouldn’t have done before. This may also be a period of reconnecting with old friends, family, lovers, or others we haven’t seen in a while. When we reconnect with people during a retrograde, it can help to facilitate a shift in the relationship. In some cases, issues from the past can come up which may need to be hashed out.

The Deeper Purpose of Mercury Retrograde

Ultimately, Mercury Retrograde is a time for us to recalibrate and adjust specific areas of our lives as well as how we apply our minds towards these issues. It is a period in which we may receive important insights and see things in a new light. In most cases, it can be mildly transformational, but in some cases it can facilitate more major transformations depending on how it corresponds to your personal astrological chart.

During and following the retrograde, certain areas of our lives can go through changes or shifts, or we can experience a re-orientation of some sort which influences how we proceed over the coming months or in some cases, it can have a more long-term significance. In the three weeks afterwards, known as the ‘post-shadow’ period, we move forward with some sort of new awareness, adjustment, as well as new ideas and thoughts that have been seeded which will develop and become more defined as time progresses.

Certain things that have come up specifically in the two weeks leading up to the start of the retrograde could determine where this energy could play out. It is also possible that there could have been changes or developments at that time which may go through a sorting-out process or shift in dynamics during the actual retrograde and in the two weeks following. There could be unknown variables, either positive or negative, that were either unseen or hadn’t been conceived yet, which may become apparent over the coming month.

The sign(s) and element(s) in which Mercury retrograde travels in shows the energy we are re-orienting ourselves with. More importantly, if you are familiar with your natal astrology chart, then your house(s) or any planetary placements being affected will show more specifically which areas of life you will be experiencing its energy in. For the astrologically literate, it begins at 11’40 degrees of Scorpio and will retrograde back to 25’54 degrees of Libra before turning forward again.

Occurring Mostly In Scorpio & Partially In Libra,  The Final of a Series In Water Signs

Mercury Retrograde always happens in primarily one element for 1-2 years. This is the sixth and final one of a series occurring in water signs which began in early 2019. The water element is about emotion, feelings, sensitivity, compassion, intuition, and fluidity. This period is about re-aligning ourselves with these qualities and expressing them in new or revamped ways.

With this retrograde primarily in Scorpio, we may experience or process re-orientations, adjustments, developments, circumstances, or reflect on themes connected to shadows, fears, sexuality, mysteries,  obsessions, esoteric practices, use of power, alchemy, conspiracies, taboo subjects, death, suspicions, secrets, investigating, research, depth, regeneration, or the pursuit of mastery. Psychotherapy, psychology, astrology, tarot, and wicca, are examples of practices that may come up at this time.

This can be a great period to do any sort of ‘shadow work’ to help us on our path to achieving wholeness and greater self-awareness. Scorpio is about going deep which can be a key to facilitate emotional healing at this time. Sometimes we encounter crisis to help to push us towards some sort of transformation and this can be one of the ways this retrograde may be experienced.

Scorpio is also associated with debt, taxes, investments, credit, inheritance, loans, mortgages, and anything to do with shared or other people’s resources. In our relationships or other types of partnerships, themes around shared values or shared worth may also come up.

Scorpio can also be about purging and releasing. This can play out when it comes to our physical belongings or obligations. Emotionally or psychologically, it could have to do with overcoming negative patterns or attachments through deep understanding or discovering and healing the root cause. When it comes to our physical body, it could be about cleansing through dietary changes or modalities such as colon hydrotherapy, which can help with emotional healing as well.

Libra themes will also play a part in this retrograde, yet not as prominent as Scorpio. We can experience re-orientations around relationships, relating, diplomacy, and finding common ground. Libra is associated with balance, fairness, equality, peace, harmony, compromising, looking at different sides, and consideration of others. Themes connected to aesthetics, design, art, and creativity may also play out.

Mercury Retrograde Significant Dates

Below are some of the dates and information for some of the major astrological configurations during this retrograde.

*The dates below are based on the Americas. The further East you are located, you may need to consider it as the next day.

Oct 13th/14th Mercury Retrograde Begins at 1:05am Universal Time During Peak of Mars Retrograde. Jupiter is also sextile Neptune

The common Mercury retrograde themes and complications may come up strongly at this time and in recent days leading up to this. You may get some sort of indication of how it may be playing out for you over the next month based on how you feel or what transpires. It’s possible that certain things that happen at this time, which may seem insignificant, can somehow be connected to how this retrograde process will affect you.

This is the peak of Mars retrograde as it opposes the Sun. The potentials of frustrations, conflicts, and fights will be higher however we may also feel this within ourselves. Generally speaking, the Mars retrograde period is a time to help facilitate a shift in how we apply ourselves as well as how we express assertion, action, anger, aggression, or sexuality. These themes can come up more strongly during this period.

Jupiter is in a sextile with Neptune for much of October, but peaks in the days surrounding Mercury beginning its retrograde. This can help to soften the potential of intensity and conflicts that can happen at this time. It can be expansive, explorative, educational, philosophical, and ambitious in a creative, artistic, spiritual, mystical, idealistic, or compassionate way. With Jupiter being in the Earth sign of Capricorn, many people can experience this around ambitions, career, business, or practical matters. This energy can also be good for visual media efforts. Capricorn can help bring groundedness, practicality, and realism to this idealistic combination of these planets.

Oct 19th/20th Mercury Retrograde Opposite Uranus, Mars Square Jupiter, Venus Trine Jupiter

This is a period in which we may have to be more flexible as the potentials of changes and disruptions can be more strongly at this time. We may have to contend with surprises, inconsistencies, or impulsiveness which may be an inconvenience. The need to break free or separate from something may come up. Rebellious communication can also occur and it can be harder to focus. We should keep in mind that we may not be seeing things clearly or thoroughly so it’s good to be cautious if possible.

We may have to change the way we think about something or take a unique approach. However, for some people this can also be one of the more insightful periods of the retrograde. This energy has been present since before the retrograde began but is stronger and more noticeable at this time.

Mars retrograde is in a square with Jupiter which could reflect conflicts around beliefs, opinions, judgements, or perspectives. This can also contribute to scatteredness or excessiveness. Venus is in a trine with Jupiter (stronger earlier in the day) which can reflect optimism, expansiveness, growth, or fortunate circumstances around relations, love, financial matters, values, pleasures, or anything aesthetic related.

Oct 24th-26th Mercury Retrograde Conjunct the Sun (Inferior Conjunction)

This is the halfway point of Mercury retrograde, known as the ‘inferior conjunction,’ which is when it returns to the Sun. This can be a period of increased insights, and the themes or circumstances pertaining to how this retrograde is affecting you may come up more during this period.

Complications and frustrations can also be stronger at this time depending on your circumstances or how you are applying yourself. This may also be a period of ridding yourself of certain thoughts, ideas, perceptions, old interests, expectations, or other things that are not serving you while the potential for new ones may be seeded.

Oct 31st – Nov 7th Mercury Retrograde Square Saturn as it transitions from Retrograde to Direct

This can be a time of obstacles, delays, limitations, and restrictions as Mercury squares Saturn while it is slowing down and changing motion on November 3rd. This energy can be sobering and communications can have a pessimistic tone. Issues may come up that require realism, discipline, structure, orderliness, practicality, and caution.

Nov 3rd/4th Mercury transitions from Retrograde to Direct

Mercury will slowly begin to move forward from Nov 3rd/4th  onward. The areas of our lives that have been affected by this retrograde will start to become more clear and things will fall into place more easily as we progress into the coming days and weeks, but more so after November 7th and especially after November 13th. As Mercury gradually picks up speed, we can move forward in the areas of life that have been affected. However, usually the first few days after it ends can still feel like it is retrograde as complications may occur due to Mercury’s stationary position and in this case, its square with Saturn. It’s usually best to wait until at least 3 days afterwards before finalizing decisions, agreements, etc.

In the following weeks as Mercury is in its post retrograde shadow (until November 19th), Jupiter will be in a conjunction with Pluto that entire time but peaks as Mars ends its retrograde on November 13th/14th.  This is an energy that can be further revealing of Plutonian issues of shadows, abuse, hidden matters, and darkness. The first conjunction of Jupiter-Pluto happened in late March and early April, when there was a lot of conspiracy information coming out and also widespread fear which is associated with Pluto. It can also be transformative, empowering, and a time of tremendous growth depending on what we are doing.

As Mars slowly begins to move forward following November 13th/14th, we may feel like we are ready to proceed in different ways based on what has transpired in the first half of the month. We can begin to feel more assertive, bold, courageous, and direct. Things can move along with less obstacles and challenges in comparison to the previous months.

New Moon In Cancer: Emotional Needs & Limitations

We are having a New Moon in Cancer on July 20th/21st, depending on where you are located in the world. This is initiating a 29.5-day Lunar cycle and a new wave of energy for the coming month, however, its themes will be strongest over the following 2 weeks. This cycle will peak with a Full Moon in Aquarius on August 3rd/4th.

This New Moon is the second consecutive one in Cancer, with the previous one being a Solar Eclipse on the Solstice a month earlier. This usually doesn’t happen unless the first one occurs at the beginning of a sign on the cusp. In that case the following New Moon will occur at the end of the sign, also on the cusp. This is because the Lunar Cycle is slightly shorter than the amount of days that the Sun is in a sign and therefore consecutive New Moons are gradually shifting to an earlier position of the next sign.

This is also the first regular lunation after three back to back eclipses, however, the energies of these previous eclipses will still play out over the coming months as part of the backdrop of the other astrological configurations. You can read more about them here if you haven’t already.

Mercury Retrograde (also in Cancer) recently ended on July 12th as we are in the post-shadow until July 26th along with Venus’ post-shadow concluding on July 29th. These recent months have been a time of adjustments in certain areas of life connected to these energies and now we are in the conclusion phase of this process. You can read more about these retrogrades here.

New Moon In Cancer Opposite Saturn In Capricorn

We have been in Cancer season for nearly a month, however, this New Moon is going to extend its themes into the following Leo season. As a water sign, Cancer is associated with emotion, feelings, and intuition. It is about nurturing, sensitivity, bonding, family, domestic life, security, comforts, and nostalgia. It is instinctual and protective yet can also be insecure, smothering, subjective, clingy, overly emotional, and attached to the past.

This New Moon tightly opposes Saturn in Capricorn which is close to Pluto and Jupiter. At worst, these coming weeks can be a period of obstacles, blocks, and limitations. We may feel inhibited or restrained in some way. However, this energy can push us to be realistic, disciplined, and cautious. Issues pertaining to power dynamics, hidden matters, obsessions, or shadow qualities may come up or may need to be dealt with. We may also experience a push-pull between responsibilities and emotional needs or perhaps a need to integrate both.

Jupiter Sextile Neptune, Mars Going Into Pre-Retrograde Shadow Period

Jupiter is making its 2nd of three exact sextiles to Neptune that are happening in 2020. This one is strongest from July 22nd-August 2nd. The first one happened in mid-late February and the final will be in October. This can be expansive, explorative, educational, and philosophical, towards creativity, art, or spirituality. This can also be a period of increased compassion and idealism, however, considering the Saturnian energy realism is also at play at this time.

Mars has been in its own sign Aries since June 27th/28th and will be there until January 6th/7th. Usually Mars is in a sign for approximately 2 months, however, it will be going retrograde from September until November which is why it will have an extended stay in its sign. It is currently slowing down and will enter its pre-retrograde shadow period five days following this New Moon.

Some of the themes of this upcoming retrograde can start to become seeded from July 25th onward. We may feel more driven or aggravated than usual and as we get closer to the retrograde itself, frustrations and conflicts can increase. Ultimately this process will help to create adjustments in how we express Mars/Aries energies such as assertiveness, action, initiation, drive, anger, aggressiveness, fighting, sexuality, and male energy.  I will be writing a separate article on this retrograde as we get closer to it, join my mailing list here to ensure that you receive it.

Comet ‘NEOWISE’ Reaching Closest Point To Earth

Many of you have probably heard by now of a comet named ‘NEOWISE’ which has been seen from Earth with the naked eye throughout much of July. It is predicted that it will be visible until at least July 25th but potentially up until mid-August. NEOWISE was discovered on March 27th, 2020 and will not reappear for another 6800 years. It is the brightest one since Hale-Bopp in 1996-1997 which was much brighter than this one.

In Astrology comets aren’t widely factored as much as planets or other heavenly bodies are. This is partially because most comets take thousands of years to reappear (due to their wide orbit) and modern day astronomers usually discover them shortly before they become visible to the naked eye. Due to this our knowledge of the effects of specific comets are limited or non-existent. With the exception of Halley’s Comet, we cannot foresee them coming (like we do planets) until they come closer to Earth and get picked up by telescopes or other equipment.

According to Rod Chang, ancient astrologers observed that some comets reflected major natural disasters, man-made complications/disorders, events triggering fear, or the death/fall of a monarch/leader in the year/s in which they appear. It has also been observed that comets coincide with release or liberation from some form of oppression as well as major innovations that have a big impact on the world. Much of this makes sense with everything that has been happening this year which has been reflective of other astrological energies as well.

NEOWISE is only visible from the Northern Hemisphere and can be seen shortly after Sunset, weather pending. It will reach its closest point to Earth on July 23rd, shortly after the New Moon when the sky is darkest due to lack of moonlight. Its peak visibility will occur while it is in the sign of Leo and will also cross over the star Regulus on July 25th/26th (not yet determined if it will be visible then). These factors could potentially reflect the fall or death of a leader/monarch as observed during past comets in history.

Making Intentions & Things To Consider

What changes have occurred recently around home, family, or other aspects of your domestic life, and how should you proceed going forward?  Do you feel the need to express more of your emotional side? What have these past few weeks shown you regarding your relationships and their dynamics? Are there any responsibilities or commitments that you need to address?

These are just some examples of what to consider or focus your intentions on at this time. However, it is good to reflect on anything else that is coming up for you. It is generally best to make any intentions within the first 24 hours following a New Moon. The exact moment it will occur is 5:33pm Universal Time on July 20th, or the 21st for those in the Eastern part of the world. You can click here to see what that is in your time zone.

Mercury Retrograde In Cancer: Remodeling Security

Mercury begins another retrograde process on June 18th which will last until July 12th. This one is occurring completely in Cancer. In the weeks (and especially days) leading up to it, it can already start to feel like a retrograde and some of its themes can get seeded. This is because Mercury slows down from our vantage point on Earth and travels in the part of sky it will be returning to after the retrograde begins. This is known as the ‘pre-shadow’ period which began on June 2nd.

This retrograde is happening during eclipse season. It follows a Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius on June 5th/6th, it’s three days before a Solar Eclipse (also in Cancer), and then we’ll have another Lunar Eclipse (in Capricorn) on July 4th/5th. This retrograde also begins while Venus is in the last week of its retrograde

All of this happening in the same period indicates a time of readjustments and shifts in specific areas of our lives connected to these signs as well as how it all corresponds to our individual birth charts. You can read my latest Eclipse and Venus Retrograde articles here and join my mailing list to ensure that you receive my next eclipse article and other future content.

If you have read my previous Mercury Retrograde articles, the first two sections of this article are nearly the same and you can skip to the third section if you don’t want to re-read all the general themes associated with these periods. The other sections are more specific to this edition of it.

We may also feel more challenged when we are excessively analytical without tuning into our internal guidance.

For the astrologically literate, it begins at 14’46 degrees of Cancer and will retrograde back to 5’30 degrees of the same sign before turning forward again.

Occurring In Cancer As Part of a Series in Water Signs

Mercury Retrograde always happens in primarily one element for 1-2 years. This is the fifth of a series occurring in water signs, with the final one happening in the Fall of 2020. The water element is about emotion, feelings, sensitivity, compassion, intuition, and fluidity. This period is about re-aligning ourselves with these qualities and expressing them in new or revamped ways.

This one is primarily a reorientation around Cancerian energies and themes which is about security, family, home/domestic life, comforts, maternal nature, nurturing, caregiving, empathy, bonding and emotional connections with others. It is also associated with nostalgia and holding on to memories, especially those that are comforting. Cancer energy is also instinctual and protective yet can also be easily offended, moody, manipulative, vulnerable, insecure, smothering, too subjective, clingy, overly emotional, and attached to the past.

Mercury Retrograde Significant Dates

Below are some of the dates and information for some of the major astrological configurations during this retrograde.

*The dates below are based on the Americas. The further East you are located, you may need to consider it as the next day.

June 17th/18th Mercury begins its retrograde at 4:59 am Universal Time (June 18th).

Mercury retrograde themes and complications may come up strongly at this time and in recent days leading up to this. You may get some sort of indication of the things that may be playing out for you over the next month based on how you feel or what transpires. It’s possible that certain things that happen at this time, which may seem insignificant, can somehow be connected to how this retrograde process will affect you.

June 21st Solar Eclipse In Cancer

This is a powerful annular eclipse happening on the Solstice and in the same sign as the retrograde, putting an exclamation mark on Cancerian themes. This will be the final of a series of eclipses in Cancer which have been occurring since summer 2018, yet its energies will reflect the following 6 months. I will be writing a separate article on this eclipse, join my mailing list here to ensure that you receive it.

June 25th Venus ends its retrograde and goes direct.

Venus has been retrograde in Cancer’s neighboring sign Gemini since mid-May with its themes beginning in April during its pre-shadow period. From this point onward we can begin to move forward in different ways pertaining to Venus areas such as love, relationships, values, social dynamics, finances, creative/artistic interests, or things that are aesthetic related.

However, with Mercury being the ruler of Venus’s current position in Gemini, and considering that the Mercury pre-retrograde shadow began during a significant period of Venus’ retrograde, it is possible that this Mercury retrograde (lasting until July 12th) can extend some of its themes. Both Mercury and Venus will conclude their post-retrograde shadow in late July and by that point things will have more clarity and forward momentum around certain issues that have been playing out since April.

June 29th-July 2nd Mercury Retrograde Conjunct the Sun in aspect with Uranus and Chiron, Jupiter also conjunct Pluto

The aspects with Chiron and Uranus can reflect originality, inventiveness, and creativity. Communications, thoughts, and realizations can be stimulating and have themes that are holistic, bridging, healing, or pertaining to achieving wholeness. However, pains and issues connected to wounds and blockages can also come up.

Jupiter is also in an exact conjunction with Pluto which is peaking at this time, yet this energy has been prominent since June 19th until July 10th. This is the 2nd of a series of three Jupiter-Pluto conjunctions happening this year. The first one began in the second half of March when it was strong until mid April and the 3rd (final) conjunction will be in November.

This energy can bring hidden matters to light and it can be a time of acquiring deeper understandings and perspectives. Issues pertaining to abuse, control, power dynamics can surface. This combined with the inferior conjunction can also have a transformational theme for certain people.

July 4th/5th Lunar Eclipse In Capricorn

This will be the final eclipse in Capricorn as part of a series we’ve been experiencing for the last year and a half. The effects of this eclipse will also influence the following months. I will be writing a separate article on this. Join my mailing list here to ensure that you receive it.

July 7th-9th Mercury Retrograde square Mars

This can be one of the more annoying periods of this retrograde. Conflicts, arguments, irritability, and impatience can occur more easily during this time. We need to be a little extra cautious during this period to minimize the risk of saying things incorrectly or making impulsive decisions that we may regret later.

July 12th Mercury transitions from Retrograde to Direct

Mercury will slowly begin to move forward from July 12th onward. The areas of our lives that have been affected by this retrograde will start to become more clear and things will fall into place more easily as we progress into the coming days and weeks. As Mercury gradually picks up speed, we can move forward in the areas of life that have been affected. However, usually the first few days after it ends can still feel like its retrograde, as complications may occur due to Mercury’s stationary position. It’s usually best to wait until at least 3 days afterwards before finalizing decisions, agreements, etc.

Later on around August 17th/18th and/or in the days following, there may be even more clarity around certain things that have been seeded during this retrograde. From there, things may develop further with a better perception, or circumstances may indicate lack of sufficiency, not what was anticipated, or that something needs to change.

Lunar Eclipse In Sagittarius: Restless Perplexity

We are having a Full Moon Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius on June 5th peaking at 7:25pm Universal Time which will be on the 6th in the Eastern part of the world. It will be a penumbral eclipse which only has a slight shade on the Moon dimming it’s brightness. These ones are harder to notice and can be mistaken for a regular Full Moon. It will be visible (weather permitting) wherever it will be nighttime in part or all of its duration. This includes most of Europe, most of Asia, all of Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Eastern parts of South America.

This is the first of three eclipses occurring back to back, with this one followed by a more powerful annular Solar Eclipse in Cancer on June 20th/21st and another penumbral Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn on July 4th/5th. This one is also the first of a series of Eclipses occurring in the Gemini-Sagittarius axis which we will be experiencing until late 2021. The following two eclipses will be the final ones in the Cancer/Capricorn polarity which began in summer 2018.

Eclipses reflect evolutionary changes in specific areas of our lives which can play out over the following 6 months and can begin up to 6 weeks prior. However, they are also part of a 1.5-2 year process in which the Lunar Nodes and most Eclipses are in the same signs. The changes that occur are connected to the sign they are in, the planets they are configured to, and how this all lines up with our individual astrological blueprint.

Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius Opposite Sun in Gemini, Jupiter in Capricorn

We have recently begun a process in which we are experiencing a collective recalibration in how Gemini and Sagittarius energies are expressed. This started in early May when the Lunar nodes entered these signs followed by Venus going retrograde in Gemini. However, this eclipse and others later in the year will crank it up more so and these themes will play out until early 2022.

This eclipse puts an emphasis on Sagittarius which is where the South Node is. This indicates changes and developments associated with this sign that can have a decreasing effect in how its energies are expressed, however, negative expressions of this sign can also come up more so to bring it to our attention. Sagittarius energies and aspects of life can be more constructive when they are expressed towards a Gemini focal point.

Sagittarius is associated with beliefs, philosophies, morals, righteousness, travel, exploration, and perspectives based on experience. It is associated with media, marketing, and education. Sagittarius energy can be excessive, blunt, egotistical, argumentative, fanatical, opinionated, preachy, unrealistic, disregarding of consequences, and have a ‘know-it-all’ complex.

Sagittarius and its ruler Jupiter are associated with expansion, idealism, and optimism. However, with the South Node in Sagittarius and Jupiter in the Saturnian sign of Capricorn, this is a time of being realistic, cautious, and practical. Jupiter is also moving towards a 2nd conjunction with Pluto (both retrograde) which can be transformative, destructive, and purging of the old.

This Full Moon Eclipse is opposite the Sun in Gemini which is where the North Node is. Over the next few years there is an emphasis on increase and growth around the themes/energies of this sign. Gemini is associated with facts, communication, articulation, learning, different viewpoints, neighbors, neighborhood, close friends, siblings, extended family, and our local environment.

As mentioned above, Sagittarius expressions will be more conducive within a balance of Gemini being the focal point. We are already seeing this play out. For example,  education (Sagittarius) is being done from home on devices/apps (Gemini). International travel (Sagittarius) has been minimized, but shorter trips with our country/state/province will be okay (Gemini).

Lunar Eclipse Opposite Sun conjunct Venus Retrograde

This eclipse is happening in opposition to Venus retrograde. We are in a time of reorientation around Venus ruled areas such as relationships, love, social dynamics, values, pleasures, creativity, and finances. This energy is factored into the other mentioned themes of this eclipse which can play out until the Fall.

In the days leading up to this eclipse, Venus joined the Sun in its ‘inferior conjunction’. This can reflect a shift in dynamics and/or insights.. It can be a time in which certain circumstances can be pushing us to renew or let go of some aspects of how we express or engage in Venus areas of life.

Lunar Eclipse Square Mars and Neptune

This configuration is also in a square with Mars which could have begun to play out in the five days prior. This can reflect conflicts, restlessness, arguments, competitiveness, or some sort of passionate engagement with others. For some, this energy can also be creatively or romantically stimulating. However, the Sun has been approaching a square with Mars since after the last New Moon which has been a building up of intense energy.

Mars in Pisces moving towards a conjunction with Neptune can make it confusing and it can be hard to focus our action.  Although this energy is good for applying ourselves spiritually, artistically, imaginatively, sacrificially, or compassionately, this can also reflect inconsideration of boundaries, impracticality, escapism, and asserting ourselves in a delusional or confused way. This is connected to the long term backdrop of this eclipse, but will be strongest from June 11th-14th.

Mercury in Pre-Retrograde Shadow, Sextile Uranus and Square Chiron

Mercury, the ruler of Gemini, entered its pre-retrograde shadow period on June 2nd and will be going retrograde on June 18th until July 12th. It is happening in Cancer, beginning days before a powerful Solar Eclipse in the same sign.

With Mercury being in the next sign from Venus retrograde, and ruling it as well, this can reflect the next stage of some of the themes that have come up. Keep in mind when making decisions over these coming weeks that some of the things playing out will lead to a change in dynamics or shift in perspective later in the month or in July. As Mercury increasingly slows down prior to June 18th we can also begin to experience some of the common Mercury retrograde complications.

At the time of this eclipse Mercury is in a tight square with Chiron and sextile to Uranus. Thoughts and communications can be insightful, innovative, and revolutionary. This can be good for creative solutions, realizations and bringing wholeness to a situation. Our wounds can be triggered more easily but this can ultimately push us towards healing.  .

Things To Consider

What has come up for you in the ten days leading up to this eclipse? What do you feel like you need to change or release? What are your relationships and social dynamics showing you? What aspects of your beliefs might be wrong? Is there something about the media or perspectives that you are consuming that you feel is not serving you? Are you clear about what you are fighting for or fighting against? Is there something that you may be confused about?

These are just some examples of what can be playing out for you but not limited to these either. Keep in mind that the themes of this specific eclipse will play out until the Fall and the Gemini-Sagittarius nodal themes will play out until early 2022.  It is best to try to tune into this energy as it happens and pay attention to your feelings to help you in decisions you need to make in the future.

The two weeks following this eclipse can be a good time to initiate any sort of releasing process if you feel necessary. The eclipse begins at 5:46pm Universal Time on June 5th with it peaking at 7:25pm and finishing at 9:04pm. The Moon begins to wane after 7:13pm. You can click here to see when the peak will be in your time zone.
