Mercury Retrograde In Aquarius: Social Adjustments

Mercury began another retrograde process on January 30th/31st which will last until Feb 20th/21st. This is when it appears to be moving backwards from our earth based vantage point due to the positioning of the Earth and Mercury in each of their orbits around the Sun. This one is occurring completely in Aquarius.

In the weeks (and especially days) leading up to it, it can already start to feel like a retrograde and some of its themes can get seeded. This happens because Mercury slows down (again from our vantage point) and travels in the part of sky it will be returning to after the retrograde begins. This is known as the ‘pre-shadow’ period which began on January 15th.

If you have read my previous Mercury Retrograde articles, the remainder of this section and the following one are nearly the same. You can skip to the third section and beyond if you don’t want to re-read all the general themes associated with these periods. Those other parts are more specific to this edition of it.

Mercury retrograde is known for the problematic effects it often has on communication technology, transactions, motor vehicles, anything with moving parts, and commuting in general. Some people even get headaches near the beginning of it. We could experience some challenges, misunderstandings, and errors around our communications, numbers/details, and commerce, as well as changes, cancellations, or delays in our schedules.

Sometimes these issues could occur when we are excessively analytical without tuning into our internal guidance. Depending on how we flow with it and other variables, we may not always experience these surface level inconveniences, or they could just be minor irritants.

Mercury Retrograde can also be a good time to revisit or redo tasks, projects, ideas, or anything else that was initiated in the past. It can give us a different perspective or shift in thinking that can help us to approach these things in ways we wouldn’t have done before. This may also be a period of reconnecting with old friends, family, lovers, or others we haven’t seen in a while. When we reconnect with people during a retrograde, it sometimes can help to facilitate a shift in the relationship. In some cases, issues from the past can come up which may need to be hashed out.

The Deeper Purpose of Mercury Retrograde

Ultimately, Mercury Retrograde is a time for us to recalibrate and adjust specific areas of our lives as well as how we apply our minds towards these issues. It is a period in which we may receive important insights and see things in a new light. In most cases, it can be mildly transformational, but in some cases it can facilitate more major transformations depending on how it corresponds to your personal astrological chart.

During and following the retrograde, certain areas of our lives can go through changes or shifts, or we can experience a re-orientation of some sort which influences how we proceed over the coming months or in some cases, it can have a more long-term significance. In the three weeks afterwards, known as the ‘post-shadow’ period, we move forward with some sort of new awareness, adjustment, as well as new ideas and thoughts that have been seeded which will develop and become more defined as time progresses.

Certain things that have come up specifically in the weeks leading up to the start of the retrograde could determine where this energy could play out. It is also possible that there could have been changes or developments at that time which may go through a sorting-out process or shift in dynamics during the actual retrograde and in the two weeks following. There could be unknown variables, either positive or negative, that were either unseen or hadn’t been conceived yet, which may become apparent over the coming month.

The sign(s) and element(s) in which Mercury retrograde travels in shows the energy we are re-orienting ourselves with. More importantly, if you are familiar with your natal astrology chart, then your house(s) or any planetary placements being affected will show more specifically which areas of life you will be experiencing its energy in. For the astrologically literate, it begins at 26’29 degrees of Aquarius and will retrograde back to 11’01 degrees of the same sign before turning forward again.

Occurring In Aquarius, The First of a Series Primarily in Air Signs

Mercury Retrograde always happens in primarily one element for 1-2 years. This is the first of a series that is mainly occurring in Air signs which will last until Fall 2022. The Air element is about intellect, objectivity, the mind, communication, and social aspects of life. This period is about re-aligning ourselves with these qualities if necessary and expressing them in new or revamped ways.

With this retrograde in Aquarius, we may experience or apply re-orientations, adjustments, developments, circumstances, or reflect on themes connected to friends/acquaintances, groups/teams, the collective, humanitarianism, the global community, activism, equality, social networks, the internet, and originality. This sign is about the future as well as the innovation and utilization of all things pertaining to science and technology. Aquarius is also associated with both rationality and idealism. It is about freedom and free-thinking.

Aquarius’ Traditional Ruler Saturn Square Its Modern Ruler Uranus

During this retrograde, Aquarius’ traditional ruler Saturn (also in Aquarius) will be in a tense square aspect with its modern ruler (or sub-ruler) Uranus in Taurus. This will be strong from February 7th-24th, with it making its exact aspect on the 17th/18th. However, this energy will be a major part of the astrological backdrop throughout this next year as they will be in exact square again in June and next December/January when these energies will peak again.

Personally, after many years of observation and practice, I currently use traditional rulers as the main rulers in my astrological delineation work. However, Uranus definitely represents many qualities of Aquarius that are contradictory to Saturn and therefore it is clearly a representative of that sign as well, yet I see it as different from being a ‘Ruler’.

Uranus represents the freedom seeking, revolutionary, rebelling, progressive, reforming, idealistic, unconventional, technological, inventive, futuristic, and scientific qualities of Aquarius. Saturn represents the seriousness, aloofness, social/communal/collective structures, rational, and fixed/rigid qualities of the sign.

Although Aquarius energy is evolutionary and open minded (reflected by Uranus), it can also be unyielding (reflected by Saturn) when it comes to viewpoints outside of what it has already determined to be truth, fact, or what is best. This is the Aquarian paradox which is something we have been seeing play out collectively in the political landscape.

Outside of the overlapping Aquarian themes mentioned, Saturn is also traditional, conservative, and cautious. It rules commitments, maturity, responsibilities,  limitations, restrictions, the status quo,  and structures in general. It is about patience, practicality, discipline, and boundaries.

This is a period in which Uranus themes (as mentioned) will be at odds with Saturn themes (as mentioned). This can play out as ‘old versus new’, ‘restrictions versus freedom’, ‘the status quo versus revolution’, ‘commitments/responsibilities versus liberation’,  or ‘elder versus youth’. This can also be a time of integrating Saturn and Uranus such as applying new, technological, scientific, or metaphysical approaches to help us with our work. However this energy plays out, it will somehow play a role in the adjustments occurring in our lives (and collectively) reflected by the Mercury retrograde process.

Mercury Retrograde Significant Dates

Below are some of the dates and information for some of the major astrological configurations during this retrograde.

*The dates below are based on the Americas. The further East you are located, you may need to consider it as the next day.

Jan 30th/31st  Mercury retrograde begins at Jan 30th 3:51pm Universal Time

The common Mercury retrograde themes and complications may come up strongly at this time and in recent days leading up to this. You may get some sort of indication of how it may be playing out for you over the next month based on how you feel or what transpires. It’s possible that certain things that happen at this time, which may seem insignificant, can somehow be connected to how this retrograde process will affect you.

Feb 8th/9th  Mercury Retrograde Conjunct the Sun (Inferior Conjunction)

This is the halfway point of Mercury retrograde, known as the ‘inferior conjunction,’ which is when it returns to the Sun. This can be a period of increased insights, and the themes or circumstances pertaining to how this retrograde is affecting you may come up more during this period.

Complications and frustrations can also be stronger at this time depending on your circumstances or how you are applying yourself. This may also be a period of ridding yourself of certain thoughts, ideas, perceptions, old interests, expectations, or other things that are not serving you while the potential for new ones may be seeded.

Feb 9th-11th Mercury Retrograde Square Mars, overlapping with Venus conjunct Jupiter

In some ways, this can be one of the more annoying periods of this retrograde. Conflicts, arguments, irritability, and impatience can occur more easily during this time. We need to be a little extra cautious during this period to minimize the risk of saying things incorrectly or making impulsive decisions that we may regret later.

However, as the aspect between Mercury and Mars separates we will also experience conjunction between Venus and Jupiter (also in Aquarius) which will be strongest on February 10th/11th. This can be expansive, optimistic, fortunate, or educational when it comes to our social life, matters of love, pleasures, finances, creativity, or things pertaining to aesthetics or beauty. However this can also be a time of overindulging or overspending money/resources.

Feb 12th/13th Mercury Retrograde Conjunct Venus

This can be a good time for connecting with others socially as interactions can be pleasant. Considering the retrograde, it can be good for catching up with others that we haven’t connected with in a long time and resolving any issues if there are any. Addressing financial or relationship matters can also come up. In some cases revisiting any creative effort or aesthetic adjustment could make sense as well. Mercury will be in between Venus and Jupiter and therefore some of Mercury conjunct Jupiter themes (mentioned above) may play out as well.

Feb 14th/15th Mercury Retrograde Conjunct Jupiter

This can be a very mind opening period, perhaps lucky and expansive. It can be good for revisiting perspectives, media, or something educational related. Considering the ‘big picture’ is a strong theme now with perhaps a shift in perception or some sort of re-thinking about it. Some people may receive positive news at this time. We may have big ideas but it’s wise to wait until at least 3 days after  the retrograde ends before beginning to really move forward with anything. Mercury will be in between Venus and Jupiter and therefore some of Mercury conjunct Jupiter themes (mentioned in Feb 9th-11th paragraph) may play out as well.

Feb 17th/18th Peak of Saturn Square Uranus (although strong throughout February)

Check “Aquarius’ Traditional Ruler Saturn Square Its Modern Ruler Uranus” section in earlier part of this article.

Feb 20th/21st Mercury Ends Retrograde and Goes Stationary Direct

Mercury will slowly begin to move forward from February 20th/21st onward. The areas of our lives that have been affected by this retrograde will start to become more clear and things will fall into place more easily as we progress into the coming days and weeks. As Mercury gradually picks up speed, we can move forward in the areas of life that have been affected. However, usually the first few days after it ends can still feel like it is retrograde as complications may occur due to Mercury’s stationary position. It’s usually best to wait until at least 3 days afterwards before finalizing decisions, agreements, etc.

Nearly 2 months later, at April 18th/19th and/or in the days following, there may be even more clarity around certain things that have been seeded during this specific retrograde. From there, things may develop further with a better perception, or circumstances may indicate lack of sufficiency, not what was anticipated, or that something needs to change.

Mercury Retrograde In Cancer: Remodeling Security

Mercury begins another retrograde process on June 18th which will last until July 12th. This one is occurring completely in Cancer. In the weeks (and especially days) leading up to it, it can already start to feel like a retrograde and some of its themes can get seeded. This is because Mercury slows down from our vantage point on Earth and travels in the part of sky it will be returning to after the retrograde begins. This is known as the ‘pre-shadow’ period which began on June 2nd.

This retrograde is happening during eclipse season. It follows a Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius on June 5th/6th, it’s three days before a Solar Eclipse (also in Cancer), and then we’ll have another Lunar Eclipse (in Capricorn) on July 4th/5th. This retrograde also begins while Venus is in the last week of its retrograde

All of this happening in the same period indicates a time of readjustments and shifts in specific areas of our lives connected to these signs as well as how it all corresponds to our individual birth charts. You can read my latest Eclipse and Venus Retrograde articles here and join my mailing list to ensure that you receive my next eclipse article and other future content.

For the astrologically literate, it begins at 14’46 degrees of Cancer and will retrograde back to 5’30 degrees of the same sign before turning forward again.

Occurring In Cancer As Part of a Series in Water Signs

Mercury Retrograde always happens in primarily one element for 1-2 years. This is the fifth of a series occurring in water signs, with the final one happening in the Fall of 2020. The water element is about emotion, feelings, sensitivity, compassion, intuition, and fluidity. This period is about re-aligning ourselves with these qualities and expressing them in new or revamped ways.

This one is primarily a reorientation around Cancerian energies and themes which is about security, family, home/domestic life, comforts, maternal nature, nurturing, caregiving, empathy, bonding and emotional connections with others. It is also associated with nostalgia and holding on to memories, especially those that are comforting. Cancer energy is also instinctual and protective yet can also be easily offended, moody, manipulative, vulnerable, insecure, smothering, too subjective, clingy, overly emotional, and attached to the past.

Mercury Retrograde Significant Dates

Below are some of the dates and information for some of the major astrological configurations during this retrograde.

*The dates below are based on the Americas. The further East you are located, you may need to consider it as the next day.

June 17th/18th Mercury begins its retrograde at 4:59 am Universal Time (June 18th).

Mercury retrograde themes and complications may come up strongly at this time and in recent days leading up to this. You may get some sort of indication of the things that may be playing out for you over the next month based on how you feel or what transpires. It’s possible that certain things that happen at this time, which may seem insignificant, can somehow be connected to how this retrograde process will affect you.

June 21st Solar Eclipse In Cancer

This is a powerful annular eclipse happening on the Solstice and in the same sign as the retrograde, putting an exclamation mark on Cancerian themes. This will be the final of a series of eclipses in Cancer which have been occurring since summer 2018, yet its energies will reflect the following 6 months. I will be writing a separate article on this eclipse, join my mailing list here to ensure that you receive it.

June 25th Venus ends its retrograde and goes direct.

Venus has been retrograde in Cancer’s neighboring sign Gemini since mid-May with its themes beginning in April during its pre-shadow period. From this point onward we can begin to move forward in different ways pertaining to Venus areas such as love, relationships, values, social dynamics, finances, creative/artistic interests, or things that are aesthetic related.

However, with Mercury being the ruler of Venus’s current position in Gemini, and considering that the Mercury pre-retrograde shadow began during a significant period of Venus’ retrograde, it is possible that this Mercury retrograde (lasting until July 12th) can extend some of its themes. Both Mercury and Venus will conclude their post-retrograde shadow in late July and by that point things will have more clarity and forward momentum around certain issues that have been playing out since April.

June 29th-July 2nd Mercury Retrograde Conjunct the Sun in aspect with Uranus and Chiron, Jupiter also conjunct Pluto

The aspects with Chiron and Uranus can reflect originality, inventiveness, and creativity. Communications, thoughts, and realizations can be stimulating and have themes that are holistic, bridging, healing, or pertaining to achieving wholeness. However, pains and issues connected to wounds and blockages can also come up.

Jupiter is also in an exact conjunction with Pluto which is peaking at this time, yet this energy has been prominent since June 19th until July 10th. This is the 2nd of a series of three Jupiter-Pluto conjunctions happening this year. The first one began in the second half of March when it was strong until mid April and the 3rd (final) conjunction will be in November.

This energy can bring hidden matters to light and it can be a time of acquiring deeper understandings and perspectives. Issues pertaining to abuse, control, power dynamics can surface. This combined with the inferior conjunction can also have a transformational theme for certain people.

July 4th/5th Lunar Eclipse In Capricorn

This will be the final eclipse in Capricorn as part of a series we’ve been experiencing for the last year and a half. The effects of this eclipse will also influence the following months. I will be writing a separate article on this. Join my mailing list here to ensure that you receive it.

July 7th-9th Mercury Retrograde square Mars

This can be one of the more annoying periods of this retrograde. Conflicts, arguments, irritability, and impatience can occur more easily during this time. We need to be a little extra cautious during this period to minimize the risk of saying things incorrectly or making impulsive decisions that we may regret later.

July 12th Mercury transitions from Retrograde to Direct

Mercury will slowly begin to move forward from July 12th onward. The areas of our lives that have been affected by this retrograde will start to become more clear and things will fall into place more easily as we progress into the coming days and weeks. As Mercury gradually picks up speed, we can move forward in the areas of life that have been affected. However, usually the first few days after it ends can still feel like its retrograde, as complications may occur due to Mercury’s stationary position. It’s usually best to wait until at least 3 days afterwards before finalizing decisions, agreements, etc.

Later on around August 17th/18th and/or in the days following, there may be even more clarity around certain things that have been seeded during this retrograde. From there, things may develop further with a better perception, or circumstances may indicate lack of sufficiency, not what was anticipated, or that something needs to change.

Solar Eclipse In Capricorn: Redefining Ambitions & Duties

We are having a partial Solar Eclipse in Capricorn which happens on January 5th in the Americas and on January 6th everywhere else in the world. This is a supercharged New Moon which influences a longer term period then a regular New Moon. It will be visible from Japan, Korea, most of Mongolia, parts of Central and Eastern China, and Southwestern Alaska.

This one marks the beginning of eclipse season which occurs every 6 months when a New Moon and Full Moon occur near the Lunar Nodes, which is where the path of the Sun and Moon meet from our perspective on Earth. Most of the time there are two eclipses, such as in January, however there can also be three in some cases. This one is followed by a Total Lunar Eclipse in Leo on January 20th/21st.

Solar Eclipses reflect changes and shifts which affect the 6 months following and could also influence up to 6 weeks prior. You may not actually notice the effects around the time it occurs, but perhaps could feel it, and then see it actually play out in the weeks or months following. (Join my mailing list here to get my article on the next eclipse and other content).

The Lunar Nodes recently moved into the Cancer-Capricorn polarity in November and will be there until Spring 2020. They were in Leo-Aquarius prior to that, since May 2017. However, we had our first Cancer eclipse last summer and will have our last Leo eclipse coming up in a few weeks as this is still the transition period. The final eclipses in Cancer-Capricorn will occur in the Summer of 2020.

The positions of the Eclipses and the Nodes reflect an evolutionary process in how we work with the energies of these signs. What results from this series of eclipses will have longer-term effects even beyond this period.

Solar Eclipse In Capricorn Conjunct Saturn and Pluto

This Solar Eclipse is on the South Node side of the polarity. The shifts that could occur, both challenges and developments, are more about  changes or what we need to let go of, in relation to the energies of Capricorn to help facilitate a different balance with Cancer.

Negative expressions of Capricorn could come up which would ultimately push these changes on us. However, South Node eclipses can also push us to work with its energies in a different and more positive way as well. The areas of life in which it manifests also depends on how it is interacting with your natal astrology chart/blueprint.

Capricorn is the sign of ambition, career, duty, business, achievement, responsibility, discipline, mastery, and governance. It can be conservative, calculated, practical, orderly, realistic, authoritative, controlling, cautious, and worldly. It is a social climber and concerned with status. Capricorn energy can be serious, cold, and unrelenting.

This eclipse is occurring close to Saturn and Pluto which are also in the same sign. With Saturn being the ruler of Capricorn, it emphasizes some of the themes mentioned in the previous paragraph. It can also trigger issues connected to boundaries, restrictions, and structures.

Pluto’s energies also come into the equation and also amplifies some Capricorn themes. Its energy is powerful, transformative, deep, evolutionary, resourceful, and sexual.

It can also be obsessive, controlling, intense, manipulative, dark, destructive, and jealous. It rules over secrets, hidden matters, desires, the unconscious mind, and the underworld. It can also represent psychoanalysis, shadow selves, purging, death and rebirth. Some of these themes may come up from January 10th-11th or even around January 18th/19th.

Both Saturn and Pluto are real and serious energies. They can really emphasize ending, releasing, and constricting, especially with all of this energy occurring near the South Node in Capricorn.

Solar Eclipse Sextile Neptune, Jupiter Square Neptune

This Eclipse (with Saturn) is also in a harmonious sextile with Neptune which can help to ease some of the hard energy of Saturn and Pluto although its influence is more subtle. The shifts and developments reflected by this eclipse could play out through harmonizing ideals, spirituality, sensitivity, or compassion with our material goals or duties.

Jupiter in Sagittarius is moving towards a square with Neptune. This is one main astrological transits of this year and lasts until early fall. It peaks from January 8th-18th, and is also strong again in mid June and then in mid-late September.

At best this energy can be inspiring and compassionate. Expansive pursuits such as learning or travel may be based around beliefs, faith, spirituality, and creativity. This can be great for mystical experiences. However, it is a square which can easily bring the more challenging manifestations of this combination such as being unrealistic, lack of attention to detail, overly idealistic, or perhaps overindulging in escapist or intoxicating behaviour.

Uranus Going Direct, Mercury Square Mars, Venus Quincunx Uranus

Uranus is nearly stopped in the sky as it will be ending its retrograde which began in August and going forward again on January 6th. It entered Taurus in May and then returned to Aries where it is currently, and now will be on its way again to Taurus (enters early March) where it will stay until 2026.

During the weeks around when it changes motion, like it is currently, Uranus themes can come up strongly. There can be some surprises, liberating actions, or beginning to move forward in an innovative way. It can also manifest as shake ups, disruptions, separation, or rebellion. Globally, sometimes natural or man made disasters could occur when Uranus is highlighted.

Mercury recently entered Capricorn while in a square with Mars newly in Aries. Our communications and minds can be very energetic, productive, yet impulsive. We can move around a lot handling errands. However, conflicts, arguments, impatience, and competitiveness can also occur more easily. Ideas can be challenged and spoken word can be aggressive. This peaks January 7th-8th.

Venus is in a quincunx with Uranus which is strongest during this eclipse. Any of the Uranus energies (mentioned two paragraphs above) that manifest could have a challenging effect on relationships, money, aesthetics, or pleasures. Some adjustments may be required due to changes that come up. Venus is also in a trine with Chiron which can have a healing effect on relations or values, or perhaps people coming together that wouldn’t normally so.

Making Intentions And Things To Consider

What do you to need change when it comes to how you handle your duties, ambitions, or career? Have you been too limiting, serious, overworked, cautious, or calculated at the expense of emotional fulfillment or having a more joyous life? What attitudes, behaviors, obsessions, or types of actions do you need to change, transform, or purge so that you can truly expand? What aspects of your life do you need to be more realistic about?

These are just some examples of what to consider during this time. However, keep in mind that the energies of this eclipse will be a part of the backdrop over the next 6 months and some of the themes connected to this eclipse may not be as apparent yet.

If you wish to make any intentions, it is generally best to do so within the first 24 hours following the New Moon/Solar Eclipse. The exact/peak time of it will be at 1:28am Universal Time on January 6th which is January 5th in the Americas. Click here to see what that is in your time zone.

Mercury Retrograde In Aries: Redefining Action & Individuality

Mercury began its latest edition of its retrograde process on March 22nd/23rd, which will last until April 15th. In the weeks and especially days leading up to it, known as the ‘pre-shadow period’, we start to notice its influence as Mercury slows down and comes to a stop before moving the other way.

If you have read my previous Mercury retrograde articles, the first two sections of this article are nearly the same and you can skip to the third section if you don’t want to re-read all the general themes associated with these periods. The other sections are more specific to this edition of it.

Mercury retrograde is famous for the problematic effects it often has on communication technology, transactions, motor vehicles, anything with moving parts, and commuting in general. Some people even get headaches on or near the beginning of it. We could experience some challenges, misunderstandings, and errors around our communications, numbers/details, and commerce, as well as changes, cancellations, or delays in our schedules. We may also feel more challenged when we are doing excessive analytical work without using our internal guidance.

Although there is a higher probability of experiencing more of these problems during this time, they won’t necessarily apply to every situation. Some people may not notice these energies as much, depending on what types of things they are doing and how the astrology is playing out, unique to the person’s astrological blueprint.

Mercury Retrograde can also be a good time to revisit or redo tasks, projects, ideas, or anything else that was initiated in the past. It can give us a different perspective or shift in thinking that can help us to approach these things in ways we wouldn’t have done so before. This may also be a period of reconnecting with old friends, family, sometimes lovers, or others you haven’t seen in a while.

The Deeper Purpose of Mercury Retrograde

Ultimately, Mercury Retrograde is a time for us to recalibrate our minds and certain areas of our lives. It is a period in which we may receive important insights and see things in a new light. In most cases it can be mildly transformational, but in some cases it can facilitate more major transformations depending on how it corresponds to your personal astrological blueprint.

During and following the retrograde, certain areas of our lives can go through changes or shifts, or we can experience a reorientation of some sort. In the 2 weeks afterwards, known as the ‘post-shadow’ period,  we move forward with some sort of new awareness and adjustment.

The things that you have been doing or putting into place in the two to three weeks leading up to this period could determine how and where this energy plays out. It is also possible that there could have been changes put in place at that time which may go through a sorting out process during this time. Perhaps in that period there could have been unknown variables, both positive and negative, that were either unseen or hadn’t been conceived yet, which may become apparent over the coming weeks.

The sign(s) and element(s) in which Mercury retrograde travels shows the energy we are re-orienting ourselves with. Also, to go with that, if you are more familiar with your natal astrology chart, your house(s) or any planetary placements being affected will show more specifically what areas of life you will be experiencing its energy in. For the astrologically literate, it began near 17 degrees of Aries and will retrograde all the way to 4 degrees of the same sign, before turning forward again.

This One Is Occurring In Aries, Part of A Series In Fire Signs

Mercury retrograde always occurs in one element for more than a year. The last Mercury retrograde in December was the first of this series to be completely in Fire signs, with previous ones being partially in this element.

Fire is about passion, creativity, instinct, inspiration, assertiveness, courage, confidence, and spirit. This Fire period is about re-aligning ourselves with these themes and expressing them in new or revamped ways. If you are interested in learning more about Mercury retrograde in different elements and how it relates to you, I recommend this recently published book by Gary P. Caton.

Aries is the most ‘self-oriented’ sign. It is about independence, boldness, and leadership. Ruled by Mars, it is all about action as it is a ‘moving’ energy. Aries is competitive, initiating, and  pioneering. Negatively, Aries is associated with anger, aggression, impatience, and inconsideration.

As mentioned, retrogrades are partially about going back and revisiting or readjusting things, which may be connected to both the positive and the negative qualities of Aries. However, ultimately the end result should help us to embody more of the positive energies of this sign.

Mercury Square Saturn In Capricorn

Like the previous Mercury Retrograde period, it will be interacting with Saturn. However, during this run, this interaction will be more significant because Saturn is almost retrograde and Mercury squared it during the pre-shadow period and will return to it during the post-shadow period.

Saturn has been in its home sign of Capricorn since late December and will be there for over two years. Generally speaking, this is a period of putting in the work and discipline towards our long term goals. Being cautious and conservative may also be a theme. It is about taking a serious look at the structures in our lives and shifting what doesn’t serve us. It can also be a period of redefining ambitions and career plans for some people depending on one’s personal chart.

With Mercury Retrograde in Aries interacting with this, it’s a period to consider how our passions, inspirations, independence, drive, and even qualities of leadership need to be applied to our goals and structures. Challenges and blocks may come up during these coming weeks that we will need to pay attention to as they will help to better align us with how we need to apply ourselves to fulfill the Aries/Fire themes in a more structured way.

Saturn will be beginning its retrograde on April 17th/18th, less than 3 days after Mercury’s retrograde ends, and will last until September 6th. Part of what is playing out over the next month will lead in to and contribute to what Saturn’s retrograde means for us. As we get closer to mid-late April, there may be some changes or a shift in perspective around Saturn themes of responsibilities, goals, ambitions, discipline, structures, and perhaps career. Once Saturn’s retrograde period ends in late Summer, another shift will take place with a forward momentum based on what has transpired.

Mars In The Mix With Mercury And Saturn

This Moon cycle began with Mars in a square with Chiron aligned with the New Moon. As mentioned in my last article, it can be about dealing with Mars related wounds. It is the ruler of Aries, so therefore it amplifies the overlapping themes and energies of both this sign and planet as well as other areas specific to Mars. This can include anything to do with anger, aggression, the way we assert ourselves, or perhaps wounds somehow connected to desires or sex.

Mars will align with Saturn during this retrograde period which will also be triggered by and directly connected to what Mercury is facilitating for us. For some people this can be a period of needing to get realistic about any Mars related wounds mentioned above.

It can be a time where we are shown that we need to take a more cautious, disciplined, or calculated approach to how we assert ourselves. This can trigger conflicts and obstacles and it is possible that it could even bring some endings. This energy could become noticeable starting from March 30th when the Moon triggers it and will play out throughout the first week of April when the exact conjunction and square with Mercury takes place.

Jupiter In Scorpio Sextile Pluto

During the final week of the retrograde, and in the week following, Jupiter which is now retrograde will be in another sextile to Pluto. This also occurred in January and it is possible that what occurs at this time may be connected to what transpired in that period.

Similarly to Mercury retrograde, this can also help to facilitate transformational energy and perhaps an inward shift. It can also help reveal things to us that were hidden, or help to facilitate some sort of deep understanding. In some cases, this aspect may also bring about developments arounds finances. It may have an empowerment theme which can be a nice way to finish off Mercury’s retrograde.

Apr 15 – Mercury retrograde finishes with Saturn stationary. New Moon is 16 hours later.   At this time and over the following weeks, the areas of our lives that have been affected by this retrograde will start to become more clear and things will fall into place more easily. There will be a New Moon shortly afterwards which helps us with fresh starts as a result of what has transpired. As mentioned in the article, Saturn will also be going retrograde less than 3 days afterwards and so this may also be a period of reflecting or a shift around commitments, responsibilities, disciplines, career, long term goals, or certain structures in our lives.
