Is Black Salve a Problem or a Solution?

You may have read about or heard the term black salve in terms of a “healthier alternative” to conventional options for remedying skin lesions, such as skin cancer, warts, moles and skin tags. It seems to be somewhat controversial because reports on its safety are contradictory. Black salve is derived from the perennial, flowering Sanguinaria canadensis, aka bloodroot, a plant native to northeastern America.

A paste made from bloodroot is purported to be a “miracle cure” for the above conditions. Its active ingredient is zinc chloride, which, according to The Conversation, is a destructive agent that’s corrosive to metals. It also contains sanguinarine, a plant extract some call “toxic.” So how would black salve be safe and effective for treating skin cancer?

Michael Greger, best-selling author and founder of, observes that black salve’s viability, safety and effectiveness are unsubstantiated, and that anecdotal “evidence” is completely unreliable. Rather than being an alternative for skin issues, black salve appears to be nothing more than a corrosive paste that can damage healthy and diseased tissue alike.

The American Academy of Dermatology has issued warnings about it, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has called it out as not an “alternative” cancer cure, but a “fake” one. While some hype black salve as a skin cancer cure, in reality, bloodroot is essentially a “native herb that can be like poison ivy on steroids,”1 Greger asserts.

Greger makes a good point that while black salve is advertised by proponents, usually online, as a “selective” treatment that kills cancerous tissue without harming good tissue, it’s really just the opposite. The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine notes: “Because of its escharotic [or tissue-sloughing] character, corrosive black salve products may destroy both cancerous and healthy skin to a degree that eradicates a local cancer.”2 Greger notes:

“When tissue samples are taken from black salve treatment lesions, the damage to normal tissue is readily apparent. It can burn right through and leave you with like an extra nostril, or, even worse, one less nostril. This isn’t just ‘buyer beware,’ but viewer beware, as some of these are graphic images like this, where he … burned half his nose off. Now, on the nose, you can just be left with cosmetic defects, but put it on the face, and it can eat all the way down through an artery.”3

A huge irony is that the majority of the people who order it and apply it in the safety of their own homes are trying to avoid conventional treatments, especially for cancer, that they’re afraid will cause scarring or other unsightly damage, by choosing alternative treatments.

So Are There Any Plant-Based Skin Cancer Treatment Alternatives?

When it comes to health, it stands to reason why most people opt for “natural” or “alternative” treatments or remedies: They’ve heard how ironically unhealthy hospitals can be. They’ve been enlightened on the third highest cause of death in the U.S. medical mistakes — and they’ve read about or even experienced for themselves incidences of overtreatment for cancer-related illnesses. Worse, they often find doctors intimidating and rude, Greger states.

Making conventional medical approaches even less appealing, finding evidence that they can be worse than the disease is enough to give anyone pause.

Another problem with individuals who’ve opted to try black salve on skin lesions of some type is that they may even have self-diagnosed, and perhaps their research didn’t go far enough. A handful of unsubstantiated anecdotal “reviews” on unverified health sites may have seemed like a safer route, but the old adage “keep reading” is good advice. As a literature review on Research Gate observed:

“Patients should be educated about the lack of objective evidence supporting the clinical efficacy of black salve as a skin cancer treatment, as well as the possible cosmetic defects resulting from tissue necrosis secondary to the effects of bloodroot and zinc chloride.”4

As ironies continue, this one is worth mentioning: Greger identifies conventional allopathic medicine for the treatment of skin cancer as having an “extraordinary proven track record of successful treatment.” He adds:

“It’s one of the few cancers we’re really good at curing, because we can catch it so early because you can see it emerge, and, so, easily cut it out. So, like for basal cell carcinoma, the most common type of skin cancer, conventional surgery has up to a 99 percent cure rate, squamous cell carcinoma, about 95 percent, and the most common type of melanoma, up to 90 percent.

With escharotic therapies [like black salve], there is no scientifically documented proof of efficacy period, since there have never been any clinical trials. So, all we’re left with are glorified anecdotes ranging from ‘patient satisfaction,’ to ‘unacceptable scarring,’ to “invasive recurrent tumors,’ to ‘ulcer complications,’ to ‘death.’”5

A Viable Alternative for Skin Lesions: BEC5 (Eggplant Extract)

While black salve is clearly not the answer most people are looking for to treat skin lesions, another plant-based cream containing eggplant extract, known as BEC and BEC5, has been shown to eliminate most non-melanoma skin cancers in a matter of several weeks.

Unlike conventional skin-cancer treatment, which usually involves surgery, the eggplant-extract cream leaves no scarring or visible signs of a tumor or lesion. Plus, it’s exceptionally safe, kills only cancerous cells and leaves healthy cells untouched. It causes only minor side effects, such as itching and burning at the site.

Using members of the Solanaceae family of plants, known as the nightshade family, as a cancer treatment is not a new thing. Surprisingly, natural health pioneer Dr. Jonathan Wright identified that these types of vegetables with cancer-killing properties were used almost 200 years ago — 1825, to be exact. It took modern researchers until the 1950s to begin scrutinizing BEC as a treatment option for malignant and benign human skin tumors. In 1991, Bill E. Chan reported findings from an Australian study in Cancer Letters:

“We now report that a preparation … which contains very low concentrations of BEC (0.005 percent) is effective in the treatment of keratoses, basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) of the skin of humans. In an open study, clinical and histological observations indicated that all lesions (56 keratoses, 39 BCCs and 29 SCCs) treated with [the preparation] had regressed.”6

Nearly three years later, Royal London Hospital in the U.K. reported that a 0.005 percent solution of solasodine glycosides, which the researchers called BEC5, was a safe therapy for basal cell carcinoma, as it had a cure rate of 66 percent at eight weeks and a 78 percent cure rate after a year.7

Aside from black salve and eggplant extract, topically applied essential oils such as frankincense, known for promoting healthy cell regeneration and keeping existing cells and tissues healthy, and tea tree oil, with its antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties, have had positive reviews for removing skin tags and warts, and with these substances, there certainly have been no reported instances of tissue being destroyed as in the case of black salve.

Studies Show Eggplant Is a Better Alternative

Two studies indicate how powerful the compounds in eggplant are. In both, two men over the age of 60 had suffered for years, each with a large basal cell carcinoma (BCC) or squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). According to the International Journal of Clinical Medicine,8 when given a BEC cream to use twice daily:

  • One patient experienced a rapid breakdown of his tumor. In two weeks, it was half its original size, and in 14 weeks, normal tissue was replacing the lesion, and there was no scar tissue.
  • The second patient’s skin cancer lesion appeared “cleaner” after six weeks of using the cream, and normal tissue was appearing. Three weeks later, the lesion was smaller and, after 14 weeks, no lesion could be detected, nor was there any scar tissue.

It’s important to note, though, that rather than eating the vegetables, such as eggplant, this compound must be applied topically to be effective against skin cancer. The presence of glycosides, the molecules with simple sugars attached, selectively latch on to receptors present on skin cancer cell membranes. So, where black salve destroys tissue left and right with no sparing of healthy cells, BEC5 eggplant extract leaves healthy cells alone while eradicating the cancerous ones.

Melanoma: Another Type of Skin Lesion, and the Real Cause

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation,9 around 4.3 million cases of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) are diagnosed in the U.S. every year, and more than 3,000 deaths occur from this disease. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second-most common form of skin cancer, with more than 1 million cases diagnosed and more than 15,000 deaths annually. Here are more disturbing statistics:

  • More people get a diagnosis of skin cancer than every other type combined.10
  • The diagnosis and treatment of nonmelanoma skin cancers in the U.S. increased by 77 percent between 1994 and 2014.11
  • Around 9,320 people are projected to die of melanoma in the U.S. in 2018: of those, 5,990 will be men and 3,330 will be women.12
  • Only 20 to 30 percent of melanomas are found in existing moles, while 70 to 80 percent arise on apparently normal skin.13
  • The annual cost of treating skin cancers in the U.S. is estimated at $8.1 billion; about $3.3 billion for melanoma.14

These are sobering statistics, but the American Academy of Dermatology and the Skin Cancer Foundation collectively believe sun damage is what causes melanomas and other types of skin cancer. In fact, the new federally funded Cancer Protection Agency asserts that UV exposure is the only way people can get skin damage that leads to skin cancer.

The stances these and other governmental agencies have taken are tantamount to increasing peoples’ skin cancer risk, because discouraging sun exposure can cause vitamin D deficiency. If there’s a problem, officials say, vitamin D supplementation will take care of the problem, because in the eyes of the dermatology profession, sunlight has no value for health.

All sun-kissed skin is damaged skin. Sunscreen is seen as a prerequisite for protection against skin cancer, but incidences of melanoma have decreased with greater sun exposure and can increase with sunscreen use.

How does vitamin D help prevent skin cancer? Numerous studies indicate how much you need vitamin D from the sun to protect yourself. You can effectively use the sun for skin cancer protection by balancing the time you spend in natural sunlight to maximize your vitamin D production with maintaining your overall health.

Also, make sure you avoid getting burned. This part is true: Sunburn anywhere on your body is not good for your health. The lighter your skin, the less exposure to UV (ultraviolet) light is necessary. Lighter skin is also more vulnerable to damage from overexposure. Build up your tolerance by starting early in the spring and gradually increase the time you spend in the sun to avoid getting burned.

Once your tolerance has been built up, aim for enough sun exposure to keep your vitamin D level around 40 to 60 ng/mL (or above 60 for cancer protection).

Are There Redeeming Qualities That Make Black Salve Beneficial?

An old name for bloodroot, “Indian paint,” may have come about because Native Americans were the first to harvest the plants, drain the red liquid and make a paste from it to make topical escharotic (caustic pastes) to treat warts, moles and infected wounds.15 Over the years, there have been claims of positive uses for black salve, and some may be legitimate, but the fact remains, it’s indiscriminate in the type of tissue it destroys.

As a quick recap, anyone looking for an alternative to black salve, or for those opposed to conventional medical approaches to skin cancer, may be better off looking for DEC5 eggplant extract. Whether or not you’ve heard of positive experiences with black salve, eggplant extract doesn’t have anything close to the negative potentials as the substance marketed as black salve. But be aware: It’s sold under different names.

According to the Journal of Dermatological Treatment, black salve is marketed under several names by different manufacturers, such as Black Ointment from Dr. Christopher’s Original Formulas, Herb Veil 8 from Altered States and Cansema from Alpha Omega Labs, but no manufacturers publish specific ingredient information.16 Interestingly, there is evidence that sanguinarine has anticancer effects based on studies outside the body. According to The Conversation:

“These found beneficial effects, with selective destruction of malignant cells, but at much lower concentrations than in existing salve products. Higher concentrations result in destruction of normal tissue as well as cancer cells.”17

Further, documented adverse effects of black salve include varying degrees of damage to skin, as well as disease progression, especially when patients decide to dispense with conventional medical treatment. In fact the above study included reports on nine cases where the salve was used and documented, and all of them resulted in negative results; besides severe pain or discomfort, there were seven instances where patients’ cosmetic outcomes got worse and six where patients’ cancer advanced.

It may be possible that if black salve is applied very selectively, there may be a positive outcome, but one potentially devastating negative result could negate the positives. Thoroughly research anything you consume, breathe in or apply to your skin, and once again, let the buyer beware.

What Are the Benefits of Cyanidin?

Cyanidin and its glycosides are among the six major anthocyanins, which is a large class of water-soluble plant compounds responsible for producing the brilliant blue, orange and red colors found in fruits and vegetables. Fruits such as blackberries, blueberries, cranberries and raspberries — as well as apples, peaches and pears — are rich in anthocyanins, as are vegetables like eggplant, radishes, red cabbage and red onions.

The highest concentrations of cyanidin are found in the skin. Consumption of cyanidin-rich foods is believed to reduce your risk of arthritis, cancer and diabetes. If you are dealing with one of those conditions, or simply want to learn more about a plant compound that is beneficial to your health, you’ll want to get better acquainted with cyanidin.

Cyanidin Is a Powerful Anti-Inflammatory, Antioxidant and Antitoxic

Beyond adding vibrant color to your fruits and vegetables, anthocyanins such as cyanidin have been shown to possess many health-boosting properties including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. According to phytochemical experts,1 cyanidin’s radical-scavenging actions help protect your cells against oxidative damage and reduce your risk of cancer and heart disease. Its glycosides are easily absorbed into your blood plasma.

You may be interested to know cyanidin is considered to be a stronger antioxidant than vitamin C, vitamin E and resveratrol. As such, cyanidin quickly neutralizes reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radical and reactive oxygen.2 Plants rich in anthocyanins may assist you in controlling inflammation, especially related to arthritis (more on that later).

For this reason, cyanidin is believed to be an important factor in the prevention of nitric oxide-mediated inflammatory diseases.3 Cyanidin also has been called out for its antitoxic properties, particularly its ability to resist mycotoxins caused by fungi. A study published in the British Journal of Nutrition suggests cyanidin reduces DNA fragmentation and oxidative damage caused by:4

  • Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), a carcinogenic metabolite produced by certain types of Aspergillus (mold) species
  • Ochratoxin A (OTA), a “possible carcinogen” that is a metabolite of Aspergillus ochraceus and Penicillium verrucosum, a type of cold-adapted fungus

About cyanidin’s antitoxic effects, the researchers said, “Our experiments proved the significant cytoprotective effect of cyanidin-3-O-?-glucopyranoside (C3G) in vitro against OTA- and AFB1-induced cell damage.”5

Cyanidin Shown to Positively Influence the Treatment of Malignant Colon Disease

In a study published in Scientific Reports,6 researchers from the University of Eastern Finland, working in conjunction with the U.S. National Institute on Aging, noted the promising role berry pigment, also known as anthocyanins, may play in cancer treatment. The study focused on the effect of berry pigment on sirtuins — a type of protein involved in regulating your body’s cellular processes with respect to DNA repair, inflammation response reduction, longevity and metabolism.

Specifically, the study highlighted the effects of anthocyanins on a lesser-known sirtuin referred to as SIRT6, which has been linked to glucose metabolism.7 Given the study outcomes, it’s possible the regulation of this enzyme could open up new avenues for cancer treatment.

“The most interesting results of our study relate to cyanidin, which is an anthocyanin found abundantly in wild bilberry, blackcurrant and lingonberry,” says lead study author Minna Rahnasto-Rilla, who holds a doctorate in pharmacy at the University of Eastern Finland.8 Specifically, Rahnasto-Rilla and the school’s sirtuin research group noted cyanidin:9

  • Increased SIRT6 levels in human colorectal cancer cells
  • Decreased the expression of the twist-related protein (Twist1) and glucose transporters (GLUT1) cancer genes
  • Increased the expression of the tumor-suppressor forkhead box O3 (FoXO3) gene in cells

The findings show anthocyanins such as cyanidin, which are abundant in berries, can increase the activation of SIRT6, and therefore reduce the expression of cancer genes as well as cancer cell growth. The study authors stated: “The most potent SIRT6 activator, cyanidin, belonged to anthocyanidins and produced a 55-fold increase in SIRT6 activity compared to the 3 to tenfold increase for the others. Cyanidin also significantly increased SIRT6 expression in Caco-2 (colon cancer) cells.”10

Cyanidin May Be a Key in Prostate Care

According to the American Cancer Society,11 prostate cancer is second only to skin cancer as the most common cancer among U.S. men. They suggest about 1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with the disease during his lifetime. Notably, about 60 percent of the cases are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older.

In 2018, more than 164,000 new cases of the disease are expected to be diagnosed and upward of 29,000 American men die of prostate cancer annually. Given these facts, the good news is cyanidin has been shown to be a beneficial natural treatment for prostate cancer.

Researchers have long thought differences in diet — particularly the consumption of wine, which contains cyanidin and other beneficial polyphenols — may explain the high rates of prostate cancer in the U.S. as compared to the much lower rates among men living in Mediterranean countries. In those countries, a diet rich in fish and olive oil, as well as healthy amounts of fruits, nuts and vegetables, is thought to act as a natural cancer inhibitor. Authors of a study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry said:12

“Epidemiological evidence indicates that polyphenolic compounds in diets are protective against cancer, and cyanidin and kaempferol are abundant in wine and plants.

Therefore, the objective of the investigation was to determine the effects of cyanidin and kaempferol on prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) protein levels, and if peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma) and nuclear factor kappaB (NFkappaB) are involved in the expression of COX-2 in prostate cancer cells.”

What they found was that cyanidin lessens PGE2 production and COX-2 expression in human prostate cancer cells. The study authors stated, “Cyanidin and kaempferol … reduced the level of PGE2 in … cell cultures and also attenuated the effect of arachidonic acid on increasing the amount of PGE2.

Cyanidin reduced the levels of COX-2 protein in a dose- and time-dependent fashion.”13 A 2015 study published in the International Journal of Oncology14 found cyanidin induced cell death and differentiation in prostate cancer cells. About the results, the researchers said:15

“[C]ompounds like polyphenols, capable of inducing differentiation may represent potential chemotherapeutic agents. We show for the first time that C3G, the most abundant anthocyanin in the human diet, inhibits cell growth and cell viability, resulting in the reversion of both androgen-sensitive (LnCap) and of the androgen-independent (DU145) [prostate cancer] cells from a proliferating to a differentiated state.”

Cyanidin Protects Your Heart; Be Sure to Eat Blueberries and Strawberries

Blueberries and strawberries, both of which are rich in anthocyanins, including cyanidin, are highly regarded for their role in helping protect your heart and lower your blood pressure. Past research revealed that women ages 25 to 42 who ate more than three servings per week of blueberries and strawberries had a 32 percent lower risk of having a heart attack.16

Anthocyanins are known to benefit the endothelial lining of your circulatory system, possibly preventing plaque buildup in your arteries, as well as promoting healthy blood pressure.

Other research has shown these antioxidants to protect against heart disease by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, while enhancing capillary strength and inhibiting platelet formation.17 Eating blueberries has also been shown to lower your blood pressure. A study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics18 involving postmenopausal women suggests blueberry consumption positively affects blood pressure.

The women, who had either prehypertension or hypertension, received a placebo powder or freeze-dried blueberry powder — an amount equivalent to about 1 cup of fresh blueberries — daily for eight weeks. While the placebo group saw no significant changes, the women supplementing with blueberries realized a 5 to 6 percent drop in both their systolic (top number) and diastolic (bottom number) blood pressure readings.

Measurements of nitric oxide were also significantly increased in the blueberry group, with no such change in the control group. Nitric oxide helps your blood vessels maintain their elasticity and also dilates your blood vessels, thereby reducing your blood pressure. The study authors stated: “Daily blueberry consumption may reduce blood pressure and arterial stiffness, which may be due, in part, to increased nitric oxide production.”

Can Cyanidin Help Prevent and Control Diabetes?

The significance of anthocyanins, such as cyanidin, in the prevention and treatment of Type 2 diabetes was highlighted in a 2018 literature review conducted at the Wroclaw Medical University in Poland.19

The study authors reviewed previous research related to the importance of anthocyanins in regulating carbohydrate metabolism and reducing insulin resistance as major factors in lowering the risk of Type 2 diabetes. According to the team, to date, a number of studies involving humans and animals have demonstrated anthocyanins:20

Enhance the secretion of adiponectin and leptin

Fuel the activation of adenosine monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase

Increase the activation of PPAR? in adipose tissue and skeletal muscles

Inhibit intestinal alpha-glucosidase and pancreatic alpha-amylase

Reduce retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) expression

Regulate glucose transporter type 4 (GLUT4) gene expression and translocation

Additionally, anthocyanins were found to improve insulin secretion by rodent pancreatic beta cells. Because individual anthocyanins and their glycosides have different activity, the researchers recommended eating a variety of plant products as part of your daily diet to ensure you are getting a wide range of anthocyanins.

Cyanidin Found in Cherries Shown to Decrease Arthritis in Lab Rats

A 2005 Chinese study21 suggests cyanidin — specifically cyanidin from cherries — due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, helped decrease arthritis (paw swelling) in lab rats. After arthritis was introduced via injection into the paws of four groups of lab rats, researchers treated three of the groups with cyanidin. One group received a high dose, another a middle dose and the third a low dose.

The hind legs of the rats in the four injection groups, as well as those in a separate control group, were observed over a 14-day period. The researchers noted cyanidin could protect against paw swelling in the rats receiving the arthritis injections. Throughout the study, swelling in the cyanidin-treated groups was significantly reduced compared with the group that received the injection but no cyanidin treatment. The study authors stated:22

“Histological examination of sections through the hind limbs revealed alleviation of inflammatory reaction in the joint after the treatment. The cyanidin could protect against the paws swelling in arthritis-induced rats, and alleviate the inflammatory reaction in the joint, and the mechanism might … improve the total antioxidative capacity and scavenge the free radicals … The results suggest cyanidin from cherries could be one of the potential candidates for the alleviation of arthritis.”

Although Cyanidin Is Beneficial, You Must Limit Your Daily Fructose Intake

While berries and other colorful fruits are both tasty and nutrient-rich, I recommend you eat them in moderation. Even though whole fruit contains natural sugars, for optimal health, you must limit your fruit intake. As such, I advise you keep your total fructose intake below 25 grams (g) daily, including fructose from whole fruit.

If you have diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure or insulin resistance you should limit your daily intake of fructose to 15 g until your condition improves. Because most berries and thin-skinned fruits are sprayed with pesticides, it’s always best to buy organic or grow your own. Below is a table showing the amount of fructose present in various cyanidin-rich fruits:23

Why Intermittent Fasting Is More Effective Combined With Ketogenic Diet

Fasting has been used for thousands of years to keep us well, and it’s the most profoundly effective metabolic intervention I know of. Not only does it upregulate autophagy and mitophagy — natural cleansing processes necessary for optimal cellular renewal and function — but it also triggers the generation of stem cells. The cyclical abstinence from food followed by refeeding also massively stimulates mitochondrial biosynthesis.

There’s even evidence to suggest fasting can help prevent or even reverse dementia, as it helps your body clean out toxic debris. By lowering insulin, you also increase other important hormones, including growth hormone (known as “the fitness hormone”), which is important for muscle development and general vitality.

Most of these rejuvenating and regenerating benefits occur during the refeeding phase, not the “starvation” phase. The same holds true for nutritional ketosis, which produces the greatest benefits when pulsed. I’ve written a number of articles on both of these topics. Here, the focus is on why these two strategies work best when combined.

Fasting Is a Powerful Tool for Rejuvenation and General Health

Research shows fasting is a powerful lifestyle tool for combating obesity, insulin resistance and related health problems, including cancer. The reason for this is because when autophagy increases, your body starts breaking down and recycling old protein, including beta amyloid protein in your brain believed to contribute to Alzheimer’s. Then, during the refeeding phase, growth hormone increases, boosting the rebuilding of new proteins and cells. In other words, it reactivates and speeds up your body’s natural renewal cycle.

While water-only fasting can be extremely beneficial for those struggling with excess weight and/or Type 2 diabetes, compliance can be difficult. Fortunately, research has confirmed that similar results (albeit not as profound) can be achieved through intermittent fasting, i.e., following a meal-timing schedule where you’re fasting for at least 16 hours every day and eating all of your meals within eight consecutive hours.

There are also other intermittent fasting plans where you dramatically cut back on your calories for a certain number of days each week, while eating normally during the remainder. The 5-to-2 intermittent fasting plan is one such example. The fasting mimicking diet, developed to match the effects of water-only fasting, is another. Most if not all of these plans have similar benefits, which include:1,2,3,4

Upregulating autophagy and mitophagy

Increasing growth hormone by as much as 1,300 percent in women and 2,000 percent in men,5 thereby promoting muscle development and vitality

Shifting stem cells from a dormant state to a state of self-renewal

Preventing, slowing the progression of, and reversing Type 2 diabetes

Boosting mitochondrial energy efficiency and biosynthesis

Reproducing some of the cardiovascular benefits associated with exercise

Lowering inflammation

Improving pancreatic function

Improving circulating glucose and lipid levels

Protecting against cardiovascular disease

Reducing blood pressure

Modulating levels of dangerous visceral fat

Improving metabolic efficiency and body composition

Reducing low-density lipoprotein and total cholesterol

Significantly reducing body weight in obese individuals

Improving immune function6

Boosting production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which stimulates creation of new brain cells and triggers brain chemicals that protect against brain changes associated with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease7

New Research Questions Effectiveness of Intermittent Fasting When Still Eating Poorly

While intermittent fasting may sound like a panacea against ill health and excess weight, it alone may not provide you with all of these benefits. The quality of your diet plays an important role if you’re looking for more than mere weight loss. More specifically, recent research highlights the importance of nutritional ketosis when intermittently fasting.

The study8,9 in question examined the effects of intermittent fasting on weight loss and metabolic disease risk parameters in 23 obese volunteers. The study lasted for three months. Between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., the participants were allowed to eat whatever they wanted in any quantity. For the remaining 16 hours, they were only permitted water or calorie-free drinks. The outcomes were then compared to a nonintervention control group from a previous fasting trial.

Overall, participants consumed about 350 fewer calories per day and lost just under 3 percent of their body weight. Systolic blood pressure also dropped about 7 mmHg, compared to the historical control group. Lead author Krista Varady, associate professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, commented on the results saying,10 “The take-home message from this study is that there are options for weight loss that do not include calorie counting or eliminating certain foods.”

While these findings are similar to other intermittent fasting studies, the participants’ weight loss was slightly less than what’s been observed in other studies. Trials of alternate-day fasting and the 5-to-2 fasting plan have found people lose between 3 and 8 percent in eight to 52 weeks. According to the authors, “We speculate that this difference in weight loss is due to greater overall caloric restriction achieved with other forms of intermittent fasting …”

While this may sound “good enough,” there’s an important detail that needs to be addressed. While participants did lose weight, other metabolic health parameters did not significantly improve compared to no-treatment controls, including visceral fat mass, diastolic blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting glucose and fasting insulin.

Weight Loss Alone Won’t Fix Your Health Problems

As I’ve repeatedly mentioned, one of the key benefits of intermittent fasting is normalizing your glucose and insulin levels — along with many other biological metrics, including all of the ones mentioned above — and that simply didn’t happen here. The question is why? I believe the answer is fairly obvious, based on the evidence. The participants were not instructed to alter WHAT they ate, and if they were anything like a majority of Americans, a large portion of their diet was likely processed food and probably even fast food.

The issue of food choices was a sticking point for me when I interviewed Varady on her alternate-day fasting diet back in 2014. That particular plan consists of eating just 500 calories every other day, but what form those calories take is up to the individual. At the time, I stressed the importance of eating a diet high in healthy fats, moderate in protein with unrestricted amounts of fresh vegetables to optimize overall health on any intermittent fasting program.

The reason for my objection to not including specific guidelines on food choices was exactly what her latest study shows — unless you also balance your macronutrient ratios, you might lose weight but you’ll forgo many of the most important health benefits. If you lose weight but don’t move the needle on glucose, insulin and other disease risk parameters, then the benefit is little more than cosmetic.

For Optimal Health, Combine Intermittent Fasting With Cyclical Nutritional Ketosis

So, while the featured study presents intermittent fasting as a successful weight loss method, from my perspective it really highlights the importance of combining intermittent fasting with cyclical nutritional ketosis.

The ketogenic diet provides many of the same health benefits associated with fasting and intermittent fasting (listed above), and when done together, most people will experience significant improvements in their health — including not just weight loss, which is more of an inescapable side effect of the metabolic improvements that occur, but other benefits such as:

Improved insulin sensitivity, which is key for preventing insulin resistance, Type 2 diabetes and related diseases. Studies have shown diabetics who stick to a ketogenic diet are able to significantly reduce their dependency on diabetes medication. Many have even successfully reversed their diabetes this way.11 Having a healthy insulin level will also lower your risk of Alzheimer’s, as dementia and insulin resistance are closely linked.12

Increased muscle mass. Ketones are structurally similar to branched-chain amino acids, and since they tend to be preferentially metabolized, they spare whatever branched-chain amino acids you have, thereby promoting muscle mass.

Reduced inflammation. Your body is designed to have the metabolic flexibility to use both sugar and fat as fuel sources. However, fat is preferred as it generates far fewer reactive oxygen species and secondary free radicals when burned. So, by eliminating sugar from your diet, you significantly decrease your risk of chronic inflammation.

Reduced risk of cancer. I believe cyclical ketosis is a revolutionary intervention that can significantly lower your risk of becoming a cancer statistic, for the simple reason that cancer cells lack the metabolic flexibility to use ketones for its energy needs, which your regular cells can. Once your body enters nutritional ketosis, cancer cells no longer have a readily available source of nourishment and essentially “starve” to death before they can become a problem.

Increased longevity. Ketosis spares protein breakdown, which is one of the reasons you can survive a long time without food. Much like calorie restriction (fasting), ketones also help clear out malfunctioning immune cells13 and reduce IGF-1, which regulates growth pathways and growth genes, and plays an important role in aging and autophagy and mitophagy.

Ketone metabolism also increases the negative redox potential of your family of NAD coenzyme redox molecules, which helps control oxidative damage by increasing NADPH and promoting transcription of enzymes of the antioxidant pathways though activation of FOXO3a.14

In a nutshell, ketone metabolism effectively reduces oxidative damage, which translates into improved health and longevity. The lack of sugar also helps explain why the ketogenic diet is associated with life extension.

Sugar is a very potent accelerator of aging and premature death, in part by activating two genes known as Ras and PKA, both of which are known to accelerate aging.15 A third reason has to do with the fact that both calorie restriction and intermittent fasting inhibit the mTOR pathway, which has been shown to play an important role in life extension.

Weight loss: If you’re trying to lose weight, then a ketogenic diet is one of the best ways to do it, because it helps access your body fat so that it can be shed. In one study,16 obese test subjects were given a low-carb ketogenic diet and a low-fat diet. After 24 weeks, researchers noted that the low-carb group lost more weight (9.4 kilograms; 20.7 pounds) compared to the low-fat group (4.8 kilograms; 10.5 pounds).

Even my own body was able to feel the benefits of following a ketogenic diet. When I first began, my weight dropped from 180 to 164 pounds, despite eating 2,500 to 3,000 calories per day. Since then, I have increased my consumption to 3,500 to 4,000 calories just to maintain my ideal weight.

Why Cyclical Ketosis?

A ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting both allow your body to shift from sugar- to fat-burning — an important metabolic flexibility that in turn promotes optimal function of all the cells and systems in your body. And, while there’s evidence supporting either of these as stand-alone strategies, it seems clear to me that combining them will produce the best results overall.

As there are caveats with intermittent fasting, such as the importance of eating healthy whole or minimally processed foods when you do eat, there are caveats when it comes to nutritional ketosis as well. Most people believe continuous keto is the key to success, but mounting evidence suggests this is not the case. This is why the mitochondrial metabolic therapy (MMT) program detailed in my book, “Fat for Fuel,” stresses cyclical ketosis. There are at least two significant reasons for the pulsed approach:

Insulin suppresses hepatic glucogenesis, i.e., the production of glucose by your liver. When insulin is chronically suppressed long-term, your liver starts to compensate for the deficit by making more glucose. As a result, your blood sugar can begin to rise even though you’re not eating any carbohydrates.

In this situation, eating carbohydrates will actually lower your blood sugar, as the carbs will activate insulin, which will then suppress your liver’s production of glucose. Long-term chronic suppression of insulin is an unhealthy metabolic state that is easily avoidable by cycling in and out of keto.

More importantly, many of the metabolic benefits associated with nutritional ketosis in general actually occur during the refeeding phase. During the fasting phase, clearance of damaged cell and cell content occurs, but the actual rejuvenation process takes place during refeeding.

In other words, cells and tissues are rebuilt and restored to a healthy state once your intake of net carbs increases. (The rejuvenation that occurs during refeeding is also one of the reasons intermittent fasting is so beneficial, as you’re cycling between feast and famine.)

How to Implement Cyclical Keto and Fasting

To reiterate, fasting and nutritional ketosis provide many of the same benefits, and both work best when implemented in a pulsed fashion. Together, I believe cyclical keto and intermittent fasting is a near-unbeatable combination capable of really maximizing the health benefits of both. While the details are provided in “Fat for Fuel,” here is a summary of how to implement these two strategies as a cohesive health program:

1. Implement an intermittent fasting schedule: Eat all of your meals — either breakfast and lunch, or lunch and dinner — within an eight-hour window each day. Fast for the remaining 16 hours. If all of this is new to you and the idea of making changes to your diet and eating habits seems too daunting, simply start out by eating your regular diet on this timed schedule.

Once this has become routine, move on to implement the ketogenic diet (step 2), followed by the cyclical component (step 3). You can take comfort in knowing that once you reach step 3, you will be able to cycle in some of your favorite healthy carbs once again on a weekly basis.

If you want to further maximize the health benefits of fasting, consider graduating into doing five-day, water-only fasts on a regular basis. I do it three to four times a year. To make the process easier, slowly work your way up to the point where you’re fasting for 20 hours a day and eating your two meals within a span of just four hours. After a month of doing this, pulling off a five-day water fast will not be nearly as challenging.

2. Switch to a ketogenic diet until you can create measurable ketones: The three-part key is to 1) restrict net carbohydrates (total carbs minus fiber) to 20 to 50 grams per day, 2) replace the lost carbs with healthy fats so that you’re getting anywhere from 50 to 85 percent of your daily calories from fat, and 3) limit protein to one-half gram of protein per pound of lean body mass. (To determine your lean body mass, subtract your body fat percentage from 100, then multiply that percentage by your current weight.)

Vegetables, which are loaded with fiber, can be eaten without restrictions. The primary carb sources that need to be cut out are grains and all forms of sugar, including high-fructose fruits. (Healthy net carbs will be cycled back in once you’ve entered ketosis.)

Examples of healthy fat sources include avocados, coconut oil, animal-based omega-3 from fatty fish, butter, raw nuts (macadamia and pecans are ideal as they’re high in healthy fat while being low in protein), seeds, olives and olive oil, grass fed animal products, MCT oil, raw cacao butter and organic pastured egg yolks. Avoid all trans fats and highly refined polyunsaturated vegetable oils.

Adding these harmful fats17 can cause more damage than excess carbs, so just because an item is “high in fat” does not mean you should eat it. Maintain these ratios of net carbs, fat and protein until you’ve achieved ketosis and your body is burning fat for fuel. Keto testing strips can be used to confirm that you’re in ketosis, defined as having blood ketones in the range of 0.5 to 3.0 mmol/L.

Keep in mind that precision is important when it comes to these nutrient ratios. Too many net carbs will effectively prevent ketosis as your body will use any available glucose first, since it’s a much faster-burning fuel.

Since it’s virtually impossible to accurately estimate the amount of fat, net carbs and protein in any given meal, make sure you have some basic measuring and tracking tools on hand. This includes a kitchen scale, measuring cups and a nutrient tracker ( is a free, accurate nutrient tracker that is already set up for nutritional ketosis).

3. Once you’ve confirmed that you’re in ketosis, begin cycling in and out of keto by adding higher amounts of net carbs back in, once or twice a week. As a general recommendation, triple the amount of net carbs on these high-carb days.

Keep in mind it can take anywhere from a couple of weeks to a few months before your body is able to effectively burn fat again. Again, cycling in and out of nutritional ketosis will maximize the biological benefits of cellular regeneration and renewal, while minimizing the potential drawbacks of continuous keto.

While higher net carb amounts are allowed once or twice a week at this stage, I would advise you to still be mindful of what’s healthy and what’s not. Ideally, you’d forgo potato chips and bagels, and focus on adding in healthier alternatives such as digestive-resistant starches.

High net-carb foods such as potatoes, rice, bread and pasta all become more digestive-resistant when they’re cooked, cooled and then reheated, and this is one way of making such indulgences a bit healthier. To learn more about this, see “This Simple Trick Can Minimize Damage From Unhealthy Carbs.”

Who Lucifer Actually Is & Why They Are Here (Part 3: The Harvest)

(Note: If you have not read the first two installments of this article, I would highly recommend that you first read  Who Lucifer Actually Is & Why They Are Here (Part 1) and Who Lucifer Actually Is & Why They Are Here (Part 2: Bloodline Families), because they provide an essential context for the discussion here.)

In trying to reconcile the very polarized opinions about Lucifer–as the bringer of light and wisdom on the one hand, as the embodiment of pure evil and licentiousness on the other hand–it becomes important to envisage our reality as multi-layered, through which something that appears very real at one level is determined at a higher level to be an illusion, albeit a purposeful one. Ultimately, in spiritual discourse, there is only one truth that binds all traditions at their root–the fact that at the highest level of perception, we are all one. To attempt to construct a spiritual cosmology that does not spring from this fundamental truth is where much of the confusion and contradiction starts.

Western Religions Grounded In Duality

While Eastern spiritual traditions are rooted in the idea that duality–yin and yang–is the immanent vehicle for movement around the wheel of karma, Western religions such as Christianity, Islam, and Judaism seem to have devolved into a belief system where duality is still present in the highest order of reality. There seems to be this odd notion, for example, that the one true God created everything, but somehow part of his creation has slipped from his grasp; that forces of evil–call them Lucifer, Satan, the Devil, whatever–have established some kind of ‘independent reality’ outside of the gates of the Kingdom of God (i.e. ‘everything’), and thus portrays the fight between Good and Evil as ubiquitous across all levels of reality. Where there are hints about a full return to unity, it is only seen as occurring once God has somehow, through fierce opposition, eviscerated all evil from the highest realms of universal reality.

There is a notion in Christianity that if we are judged to have been ‘good’ in this life we will go to enjoy paradise in Heaven for all of time, and if we are judged to be ‘evil’ we will go to suffer in the fires of Hell for eternity. This notion could generously be termed a gross oversimplification. But it is more so an egregious departure from the fundamental tenet of the self-evident ‘unity’ of God from which mature spiritual discourse emerges. In the end, it has existed and been maintained to serve as one of several tools of control for the Roman Catholic Church. Fortunately, this simplistic notion of ‘Heaven’ has increasingly lost favor among today’s spiritual seekers in deference to more comprehensive cosmologies that better recognize the impeccably designed experience of ‘life’ that has been conceived and manifested by the universal intelligence some call ‘God’.

Human Evolution Through Densities

The desire to ‘return to Heaven’ that some of us sense intuitively is connected to a much longer and more elaborate journey than Christian dogma would have us believe, involving many incarnations through which we learn and grow in order to move up an octave of ‘densities’. Hidden-Hand explains the process here in terms of what happens after the Planetary Logos has been created:

The planetary Energy begins to become aware of Itself (the 1st Density of awareness is ‘Consciousness’), and the Planetary Logos  begins to create other downward steps within Itself, and the internal make up of the planet begins to form; as the raw elements of air and fire combine to ‘work on’ the Waters and Earth, thus arising conscious awareness of their ‘being’, and the process of ‘evolution’ begins, forming the 2nd Density.

2nd Density beings begin to become aware of themselves, as being ‘separate’, and thus begin to evolve toward the 3rd Density of self-conscious-awareness, (the lowest Density into which a ‘human soul’ can incarnate).

Humans in turn (or the Souls incarnated within them), seek to ‘return to the Light’ and Love, from which they came, as they begin the journey of progression, from 3rd Density up to the 8th Density, and the return to The Infinite One-ness.

As we reach higher densities it is natural for us as individual souls to begin to return into the consciousness ‘groups’ from which we came. Hence once we approach 6th Density, each of us will have likely begun to assimilate our individual ‘identity’ with other souls that we see as part of ‘us,’ like Hidden-Hand and his ‘group soul’ named Lucifer.

Lucifer’s Role In Human Evolution

Lucifer’s role has been to stoke human beings to evolve from the 3rd Density to the 4th Density, which some have called ‘Ascension’. As described in an earlier installment, the inhabitants of Earth were living in a paradise but there was no possibility for evolution because there was a significant lack of duality (i.e. good and evil) and therefore no real freedom of choice. Humanity’s decision to partake of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil via Lucifer’s temptation set humanity on a course of evolution into 4th density which has been widely prophesied to be about to occur at this very time in our history:

Questioner: Is it the end-times, as described in the book of revelations?

Hidden-Hand: Yes. Not just described in the Book of Revelations, but also in the prophesies of virtually every religion, spiritual philosophy, and mystery tradition throughout history. This time is now at hand.

To use your own example however: Revelation 14:14-16:

’14 Then I looked, and behold, a white cloud, and on the cloud sat One like the Son of Man, having on His head a golden crown, and in His hand a sharp sickle. 15 And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to Him who sat on the cloud, “Thrust in Your sickle and reap, for the time has come for You to reap, for the harvest of the earth is ripe.” 16 So He who sat on the cloud thrust in His sickle on the earth, and the earth was reaped.’

The ‘earth’ is indeed ripe for Harvest. The question is, who will be ready? And will the Harvest be Positive, or Negative?

The Harvest

The ‘Harvest’ described here by Hidden-Hand is likened to the ‘Day of Judgment,’ whereby at the chosen hour the wheat shall be separated from the chaff, meaning the good from the bad. The good will ‘Ascend’ to a higher density, and enjoy the fruits of their efforts to evolve. However the idea is given more nuance in Hidden-Hand’s description of the Harvest, especially since he asks whether it will be positive or negative.

During this Ascension, there will be a three way split for those Souls inhabiting Earth. Those of the predominantly Negative Polarity, will accompany us as we Graduate through the Negative (or Service to Self) Harvest. We (Lucifer) will Create a new 4th Density Earth, based on the Negative Self Service Polarity. We must ‘work off’ our own part of the Negative Karmic effect incurred from all the Negativity created on this planet. Once we have done so, we will be released to once again assume our place as Sixth Density Guardians and Teachers of Wisdom throughout the Galaxy.

Those of the predominantly Positive Polarity (Love and Light) will Ascend to a beautiful new 4th Density Earth, where you will begin to work upon your learning and demonstrating of Love and Compassion. It will be a very beautiful and “Golden” Age. The 4th Density begins to open you up to your True Powers as a unique individualized aspect of The One Infinite Creator. You will perform works and wonders of the like that the one you call “Jesus” promised you would do “and even greater things than these”. It will be a very magical time for you.

For the majority of Humans on the earth who could be considered shall we say “luke warm”, they will experience a period of (what will feel ‘ecstatic’) zero-point time, where you feel totally at One with The Creator, giving you an encouraging reminder and glimpse of who you really are, before the veil of forgetfulness once again descends upon you, and you will be transported to another 3rd Density planet (a kind of ‘Earth Replica’), to continue working upon yourselves and learning that life here is all about making choices.

You will remain “quarantined” incarnating in 3rd Density matter until the time of the next Harvest; in which time you will need to have proved yourselves that you have learned how to be more Positive Beings, focused more upon being of Service to others, rather than seeking only to Serve yourself.

While the whole purpose of this exercise on the part of Lucifer is to help as much of humanity have a positive ascension to the 4th density, Hidden-Hand tells us that for Lucifer to be successful in their particular mandate with Yahweh, they must bring humans along with them to a new 4th density Earth as part of a ‘Negative Harvest’. Along with Lucifer, those humans will have to go through the arduous process of working off their karma in the 4th density in order to move over to the positive or service-to-others orientation. There is no other way to ascend to the 5th Density, because the energy in the 5th density makes it impossible for a predominantly service-to-self orientation to exist. This process of working off negative karma in 4th density is probably the closest thing to ‘Hell’ in this cosmology.

Soul Inertia

The main issue here, though, is the human group in-between. Hidden-Hands tells us that in order to positively ascend, human beings must be at least 51% positive, meaning that a little over half the time their thoughts, words, and actions need to be in the service of others. In order to negatively ascend, human beings must be a full 95% service-to-self oriented, meaning that almost all of their thoughts, words and actions must be selfish. That leaves the middle group, that sits between 5% and 51% positive. Hidden-Hand notes that ‘you may be surprised how many people on the planet are nowhere near reaching 51% Positive.’

The biggest challenge in what Hidden-Hand calls ‘the game,’ which is the elaborate path of evolution up through the densities that all souls in this universe have signed up for, is to motivate souls to make the effort to move up the ascension ladder, while at the same time not infringing on any soul’s free will. Souls are prone to inertia if the circumstances created are not conducive, as we saw in the Garden of Eden. Saw this from Jordan, and I felt this was another major point that things are really happening. Although other explanations are possible, this seems like big news.

Now roughly 40,000 indictments currently sealed across the country (America) – all filed within last 6 months (since November ‘17)

Do you know who has been filing them?

Think: Inspector General of the Dept. of Justice Michael Horowitz.
Think: Federal prosecutor John Huber working w/ the IG office.
Think: Goodbye Deep State.

I envision the last half of 2018 is going to be an interesting one.
