Ketogenic Diet Protects Against Alzheimer’s Disease by Keeping Your Brain Healthy and Youthful

Alzheimer’s disease — the most severe form of dementia — is proving to be stubbornly resistant to conventional remedies. More than 190 human drug trials have ended in failure,1 and despite a burgeoning epidemic, the best drugs on the market only ameliorate symptoms while adding other health risks.

At present, the best conventional medicine can really hope for is improved diagnosis, which is why prevention is so crucial. Mounting research suggests your diet is indeed a foundational driver of this disease, and an effective prevention strategy.

Perhaps the most important dietary factor that impacts your Alzheimer’s risk is the amount of net carbs (total carbs minus fiber) you consume on a regular basis. A high-sugar diet triggers insulin resistance — currently thought to affect as many as 8 in 10 Americans2,3 — and there’s a very strong link between insulin resistance and Alzheimer’s.4

For example, a longitudinal study5 published in the journal Diabetologia in January 2018, which followed nearly 5,190 individuals for over a decade, found that the higher an individual’s blood sugar, the faster their rate of cognitive decline.

Even mild elevation of blood sugar and mild insulin resistance are associated with an elevated risk for dementia.6,7 Diabetes and heart disease8 are also known to elevate your risk, and both are rooted in insulin resistance.

One of the most striking studies9 on carbohydrates and brain health revealed high-carb diets increase your risk of dementia by 89 percent, while high-fat diets lower it by 44 percent. According to the authors:

“A dietary pattern with relatively high caloric intake from carbohydrates and low caloric intake from fat and proteins may increase the risk of mild cognitive impairment or dementia in elderly persons.”

Nutritional Ketosis Protects and Supports Healthy Brain Function

A ketogenic diet is high in healthy fats and low in net carbohydrates, and one of the primary benefits of this kind of diet is that it allows your body to start burning fat as its primary fuel rather than sugar.

When your body burns fat as its primary fuel, ketones are created, which not only burn very efficiently and are a superior fuel for your brain, but also generate fewer reactive oxygen species (ROS) and less free radical damage. But that’s not all.

A type of ketone called beta-hydroxybutyrate is also an important epigenetic player, having significant effects on DNA expression, increasing detoxification pathways and your body’s own antioxidant production. Beta-hydroxybutyrate also stimulates specific receptors on cells called g-proteins.

When these receptors are tagged by this beta-hydroxybutyrate during mild ketosis, it helps reduce the activation of pathways that lead to inflammation, and inflammation is a driver in most all chronic diseases, be it Alzheimer’s, heart disease, diabetes or cancer. So, it’s not merely about powering your cells with fat.

A ketogenic diet also helps alter your metabolism, thereby paving the way for health. The benefits of nutritional ketosis for brain health were again demonstrated in two recent papers — an animal study and a scientific review.10,11,12,13,14

In the first paper, researchers found that this kind of diet improves neurovascular function, in part by improving the gut microbiome. In the second paper, they concluded the ketogenic diet acted as a veritable “fountain of youth” for aging rodents, significantly improving neurovascular and metabolic functions in the animals, compared to those eating an unrestricted diet.

How a Ketogenic Diet Protects Against Alzheimer’s Disease

As noted in the first study,15 published in Scientific Reports, “Neurovascular integrity, including cerebral blood flow and blood-brain barrier function, plays a major role in determining cognitive capability.”

More specifically, poor neurovascular function is strongly associated with loss of language, memory and attention, while reduced cerebral blood flow raises your risk for depression, anxiety and dementia. Impaired blood-brain barrier function has also been linked to inflammation in the brain, dysfunction of synapses, impaired clearance of amyloid-beta plaques, psychiatric disorders and dementia.16

“Interventions that maintain gut microbiome and neurovascular integrity may thus be crucial for impeding neurological disorders,” Ai-Ling Lin and her colleagues at the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging at the University of Kentucky note.17

Recent studies have demonstrated that your gut microbiome can play a significant role in neurovascular integrity, so here they sought to determine whether a ketogenic diet might have a beneficial impact on the gut microbiome, thereby enhancing neurovascular function and reducing the risk of neurodegeneration in mice.

Previous studies have also demonstrated that a ketogenic diet can benefit those suffering traumatic brain injury, ischemic stroke and autism, likely by way of altering your gut microbiome.

“Collectively, [a ketogenic diet] may be protective against various neurological disorders, possibly through the restoration of neurovascular function and by maintaining healthy gut microbiome,” the authors note. The present study adds further support to this hypothesis. Compared to animals given regular chow, rodents fed a ketogenic diet for 16 weeks were found to have:

Significant increases in cerebral blood flow

Significant increase in P-glycoprotein transports on the blood brain barrier, which improves clearance of amyloid-beta, a main component of the plaque that accumulates in the brains of those with Alzheimer’s disease

Reduced mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR), which is associated with the promotion of general health, a lower risk of cancer and extension of life span

Increased endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) protein expression

Increased relative abundance of the beneficial gut microbiota Akkermansia muciniphila (2.5fold increase) and Lactobacillus (3.2fold increase), both of which produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that ferment dietary fiber and nourish colonic cells, thereby lowering your risk for bowel inflammation. According to the authors, lack of SCFAs can also increase blood-brain-barrier permeability

Reduced abundance of the proinflammatory microbes Desulfovibrio and Turicibacter. Desulfovibrio was completely absent in treated mice, and these microbes are also known to impair the gut barrier

Increased blood ketone levels, and recent research18 shows the cerebral metabolic rate of ketones represents about one-third (33 percent) of the brain’s energy requirement after four days on a ketogenic diet

Reduced blood glucose levels, possibly due to an increase in Akkermansia muciniphila. Previous research has shown that A. muciniphila increases when Type 2 diabetics are given metformin, medication that increases glucose utilization by activating the MP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway. A. muciniphila is also associated with increased insulin sensitivity and weight loss

Lower body weight, possibly due to increases in Lactobacillus, which have been linked to weight loss and improved fat loss in several studies. As noted by the authors:19

“Being able to maintain proper body weight and blood glucose level is crucial for reducing risk for Alzheimer’s disease, which is known as Type 3 diabetes with increased glucose intolerance in the brain …

Recent advances indicate that excessive white fat increases secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines from adipocytes, which could consequently lead to neuroinflammation, amyloid-beta retention, brain cell death and dementia …

Furthermore, ketogenic diet improves hippocampal glycolytic and tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates and amino acid in a 3xTgAD mouse model, suggesting that ketogenic diet may also improve insulin sensitivity in the brain. It indicates that ketogenic diet-induced body weight loss may evoke metabolic and immune function changes that potentially lead to neuroprotective effects”

According to the authors, “Our findings suggest that ketogenic diet intervention started in the early stage may enhance brain vascular function, increase beneficial gut microbiota, improve metabolic profile, and reduce risk for Alzheimer’s disease.” Lin also told Eurekalert,20

“While diet modifications, the ketogenic diet in particular, has demonstrated effectiveness in treating certain diseases, we chose to test healthy young mice using diet as a potential preventative measure. We were delighted to see that we might indeed be able to use diet to mitigate risk for Alzheimer’s disease.”

Neuroimaging Sheds Light on How Ketogenic Diet Affects the Brain

In a follow-up paper21 published in the journal Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience, Lin’s team discusses the neuroprotective effects of mTOR inhibition in Alzheimer’s disease and aging by looking at recent studies using neuroimaging techniques to evaluate the effects of three interventions — rapamycin (an mTOR inhibitor), the ketogenic diet and simple caloric restriction — on the living brain.

Both rapamycin administration and caloric restriction have previously been shown to inhibit mTOR — a protein bound by rapamycin — thereby increasing health and life span in a number of different species.

Inhibiting mTOR has also been shown to protect against age- and disease-related neurodegeneration by improving and preserving mitochondrial function and inhibiting the retention of amyloid beta in the brain.22 “Notably, rapamycin reduces amyloid-beta plaques and neurofibrillary tau tangles and improves cognitive functions in mice that model human Alzheimer’s disease,” the authors state.

To assess the impact of mTOR inhibition in vivo, studies have used a number of different magnetic resonance imaging methods, including angiography, spectroscopy, confocal microscopic imaging and positron emission tomography (PET). In summary, the authors conclude that:

“… [R]apamycin is a preventative, and possibly a treatment, for the effects of the [Alzheimer’s disease] phenotype observed in APOE4 and hAPP(J20) transgenic mouse models of [Alzheimer’s disease]; [caloric restriction] and [ketogenic diet] can enhance brain vascular functions and shift metabolism in young healthy mice; and [caloric restriction] can preserve brain metabolic and vascular functions in aging.

We summarize these findings in Figure 123 [see below]. As the quantitative PET and MRI neuroimaging methods used in these studies in animal models can be translated into human studies, they will be greatly useful in future studies to examine the effects of these mTOR-related interventions in preventing brain function declines associated with aging and neurodegeneration in clinical trials.”

mTOR

Lin and her colleagues are now designing a clinical trial to further investigate how the human gut microbiome influences neurovascular dysfunction, which is a known risk factor for Alzheimer’s, in otherwise healthy adults. Lin told Eurekalert:24

“We will use neuroimaging to identify the association between gut microbiome balance and brain vascular function in individuals over 50 years of age, with an ultimate goal to design and test nutritional and pharmacological interventions that will prevent Alzheimer’s disease.”

Sugar Atrophies Your Hippocampus, Impairing Memory

While the ketones produced in response to a high-fat (ketogenic) diet are an ideal source of brain fuel, research25 published in 2013 showed that sugar and other carbohydrates can disrupt your brain function even if you’re not diabetic or have any signs of dementia.

Here, short- and long-term glucose markers were evaluated in healthy, nondiabetic seniors without dementia. Memory tests and brain imaging were also used to assess brain function and the actual structure of their hippocampus. The findings revealed that the higher the two blood glucose measures, the smaller the hippocampus, the more compromised its structure, and the worse the individual’s memory was.

According to the authors, the structural changes in the hippocampus alone can partially account for the statistical link we see between glucose and memory, as your hippocampus is involved with the formation, organization and storage of memories.

The results suggest glucose directly contributes to atrophy of the hippocampus, which means that even if you’re not insulin resistant or diabetic, excess sugar may still be negatively affecting your memory. The authors suggest that “strategies aimed at lowering glucose levels even in the normal range may beneficially influence cognition in the older population.”

A similar study26 published in 2014 found that Type 2 diabetics lose more gray matter with age than expected, and this brain atrophy also helps explain why diabetics have a higher risk for dementia, and have earlier onset of dementia than nondiabetics.

As noted by Dr. Sam Gandy, director of the Center for Cognitive Health at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, these findings “suggest that chronic high levels of insulin and sugar may be directly toxic to brain cells” adding that “This would definitely be a potential cause of dementia.”27

Prevention and Early Detection Are Key to Stem Dementia Tide About to Overtake Us

According to a report by the Alzheimer’s Association,28 the U.S. spends about $277 billion on dementia care each year,29,30 and that doesn’t include care by unpaid caregivers. About 70 percent of these costs are paid by the families through out-of-pocket expenses.

On average, the out-of-pocket expenses for caregivers of someone with dementia are $10,697 per year, and 40 percent of caregivers have an annual household income below $50,000. By 2050, we may be looking at a health care bill of $1.1 trillion per year to take care of our seniors with dementia.

Considering 5.7 million Americans currently have Alzheimer’s and prevalence is projected to rise nearly 29 percent in the next seven years alone, it would behoove everyone to take prevention seriously, and begin taking proactive steps sooner rather than later. For while the financial costs may be steep, no price can be placed on the emotional and psychological costs associated with this tragic disease. 

That said, early detection can certainly be helpful, and strides are being made in the development of a blood test to detect Alzheimer’s.31 In a recent trial,32 the test was 90 percent accurate in detecting the disease in a pool of 370 participants.

One of the most comprehensive assessments of Alzheimer’s risk is Dr. Dale Bredesen’s ReCODE protocol, which evaluates 150 factors known to contribute to the disease. This protocol also identifies your disease subtype or combination of subtypes so that an effective treatment protocol can be devised. You can learn more about this in “ReCODE: The Reversal of Cognitive Decline.”

The full protocol is described in Bredesen’s book, “The End of Alzheimer’s: The First Program to Prevent and Reverse Cognitive Decline.”33 However, if you’re diagnosed with early warning signs, that still means you’re on your way toward Alzheimer’s, and it didn’t need to get to that point in the first place.

As with cancer, early detection should not be confused with prevention, as diagnosing does not prevent you from having to figure out how to reverse the damage. Based on what we currently know, it seems foolish in the extreme to ignore dietary factors, and a key consideration is to reduce your net carb consumption and increase healthy fats.

According to Dr. David Perlmutter, a neurologist and author of “Grain Brain” and “Brain Maker,” anything that promotes insulin resistance will ultimately also raise your risk of Alzheimer’s. As a general rule, you’ll want to keep your fasting insulin level below 3 uIU/mL. (As a reference range, the corresponding fasting glucose level for this number would be below 75 mg/dL.)34

To this I would add that any strategy that enhances your mitochondrial function will lower your risk. Based on the evidence, I believe the cyclical ketogenic diet I describe in my book “Fat for Fuel” can go a long way toward avoiding neurological degeneration by optimizing your mitochondrial function and biological regeneration.

Other Helpful Prevention Strategies

Aside from adopting a cyclical ketogenic diet, focused on whole food (opposed to processed fare), following are several other lifestyle strategies I believe to be helpful and important when it comes to preventing the neurodegeneration associated with Alzheimer’s: 

Optimize your omega-3 level — High intake of the omega-3 fats EPA and DHA help prevent cell damage caused by Alzheimer’s disease, thereby slowing down its progression and lowering your risk of developing the disorder. Ideally, get an omega-3 index test done once a year to make sure you’re in a healthy range. Your omega-3 index should be above 8 percent and your omega 6-to-3 ratio between 0.5 and 3.0.

Optimize your gut flora — To do this, avoid processed foods, antibiotics and antibacterial products, fluoridated and chlorinated water, and be sure to eat traditionally fermented and cultured foods, along with a high-quality probiotic if needed. Dr. Steven Gundry does an excellent job of expanding on this in his book “The Plant Paradox.”

Intermittently fastIntermittent fasting is a powerful tool to jump-start your body into remembering how to burn fat and repair the insulin/leptin resistance that is a primary contributing factor for Alzheimer’s. Once you have worked your way up to where you’ve been doing 20-hour daily intermittent fasting for a month, are metabolically flexible and can burn fat as your primary fuel, you can progress to the far more powerful five-day water fasts.

Move regularly and consistently throughout the day — It’s been suggested that exercise can trigger a change in the way the amyloid precursor protein is metabolized,35 thus, slowing down the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s.

Exercise also increases levels of the protein PGC-1 alpha. Research has shown that people with Alzheimer’s have less PGC-1 alpha in their brains and cells that contain more of the protein produce less of the toxic amyloid protein associated with Alzheimer’s.

Optimize your magnesium level — Preliminary research strongly suggests a decrease in Alzheimer symptoms with increased levels of magnesium in the brain. Keep in mind that the only magnesium supplement that appears to be able to cross the blood-brain barrier is magnesium threonate. 

Optimize your vitamin D, ideally through sensible sun exposure — Sufficient vitamin D is imperative for proper functioning of your immune system to combat inflammation associated with Alzheimer’s and, indeed, research shows people living in northern latitudes have higher rates of death from dementia and Alzheimer’s than those living in sunnier areas, suggesting vitamin D and/or sun exposure are important factors.36

If you are unable to get sufficient amounts of sun exposure, take daily supplemental vitamin D3 to reach and maintain a blood level of 60 to 80 ng/ml. That said, it’s important to recognize that sun exposure is important for reasons unrelated to vitamin D.

Your brain responds to the near-infrared light in sunlight in a process called photobiomodulation. Research shows near-infrared stimulation of the brain boosts cognition and reduces symptoms of Alzheimer’s, including more advanced stages of the disease. Delivering near-infrared light to the compromised mitochondria synthesizes gene transcription factors that trigger cellular repair, and your brain is one of the most mitochondrial-dense organs in your body.

Avoid and eliminate mercury from your body — Dental amalgam fillings are one of the major sources of heavy metal toxicity; however, you should be healthy prior to having them removed. Once you have adjusted to following the diet described in my optimized nutrition plan, you can follow the mercury detox protocol and then find a biological dentist to have your amalgams removed.

Avoid and eliminate aluminum from your body — Common sources of aluminum include antiperspirants, nonstick cookware and vaccine adjuvants. For tips on how to detox aluminum, please see my article, “First Case Study to Show Direct Link between Alzheimer’s and Aluminum Toxicity.” There is some suggestion that certain mineral waters high in silicic acid may help your body eliminate aluminum.

Avoid flu vaccinations — Most flu vaccines contain both mercury and aluminum.

Avoid statins and anticholinergic drugs — Drugs that block acetylcholine, a nervous system neurotransmitter, have been shown to increase your risk of dementia. These drugs include certain nighttime pain relievers, antihistamines, sleep aids, certain antidepressants, medications to control incontinence and certain narcotic pain relievers.

Statin drugs are particularly problematic because they suppress the synthesis of cholesterol, deplete your brain of coenzyme Q10, vitamin K2 and neurotransmitter precursors, and prevent adequate delivery of essential fatty acids and fat-soluble antioxidants to your brain by inhibiting the production of the indispensable carrier biomolecule known as low-density lipoprotein.

Limit your exposure to dangerous EMFs (cellphones, Wi-Fi routers and modems)Radiation from cellphones and other wireless technologies trigger excessive production of peroxynitrites,37 a highly damaging reactive nitrogen species.

Increased peroxynitrites from cellphone exposure will damage your mitochondria,38,39 and your brain is the most mitochondrial-dense organ in your body. Increased peroxynitrite generation has also been associated with increased levels of systemic inflammation by triggering cytokine storms and autonomic hormonal dysfunction.

Optimize your sleep — Sleep is necessary for maintaining metabolic homeostasis in your brain. Without sufficient sleep, neuron degeneration sets in, and catching up on sleep during weekends will not prevent this damage.40,41,42

Sleep deprivation causes disruption of certain synaptic connections that can impair your brain’s ability for learning, memory formation and other cognitive functions. Poor sleep also accelerates the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.43

Most adults need seven to nine hours of uninterrupted sleep each night. Deep sleep is the most important, as this is when your brain’s glymphatic system performs its cleanout functions, eliminating toxic waste from your brain, including amyloid beta.

Challenge your mind daily — Mental stimulation, especially learning something new, such as learning to play an instrument or a new language, is associated with a decreased risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s. Researchers suspect that mental challenge helps to build up your brain, making it less susceptible to the lesions associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

Increasing Omega-3s Can Decrease Anxiety

New research out of Taiwan suggests treatment with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) may help reduce symptoms of anxiety, rates of which continue to climb in the U.S. and worldwide.

Anxiety now impacts the lives of some 40 million Americans and 1 in 4 senior citizens is thought to be dependent on antianxiety medications like Valium or Xanax. Given these statistics, it’s encouraging to see omega-3s validated for their potential anxiolytic effects.

Omega-3 Fats Shown to Reduce Anxiety Symptoms

Based on a review and meta-analysis1 of 19 clinical trials involving 2,240 participants from 11 countries, researchers evaluated the effect of omega-3s on a wide range of psychiatric conditions, including anxiety, depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Participants who had physical conditions like acute myocardial infarction, Alzheimer’s disease and premenstrual syndrome (PMS), among others, were also included in the research. The researchers, who asserted their work is possibly the first systematic review to examine the anxiolytic effects of omega-3s in individuals with anxiety, commented:2

“The overall findings revealed modest anxiolytic effects of omega-3 PUFAs in individuals with various neuropsychiatric or major physical illnesses.

Although participants and diagnoses were heterogeneous, the main finding of this meta-analysis was that omega-3 PUFAs were associated with significant reduction in anxiety symptoms compared with controls; this effect persisted [versus] placebo controls.”

That said, the authors were quick to note larger clinical trials — using high-dose omega-3 both as monotherapy and as adjunctive treatment — are needed to further validate their findings. Given their broad inclusion criteria, the researchers acknowledged their outcomes may have been influenced not only by “a potential placebo effect, but also from some associations of treatment with reduced anxiety symptoms.”3

They added, “The beneficial anxiolytic effects of omega-3 PUFAs might be stronger in participants with specific clinical diagnoses than those without specific clinical conditions.”4 Specifically, the scientists discovered:5

  • Daily doses of omega-3s higher than 2,000 milligrams (mg) were associated with a significantly higher anxiolytic effect, compared to lower doses
  • Omega-3 supplements containing less than 60 percent eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) were significantly associated with reduced anxiety symptoms, whereas supplements containing EPA levels at or above 60 percent were not

Anxiety Rates Continue to Climb

Anxiety, which has emerged as one of the most commonly experienced psychiatric symptoms, can be defined as “a psychological state derived from inappropriate or exaggerated fear leading to distress or impairment.”6 Experts suggest you have a 1 in 3 chance of developing an anxiety disorder at some point during your life.7

As if anxiety alone were not enough to handle, it’s not uncommon for anxiety sufferers to also struggle with depression.8 Anxiety has been associated with lower health-related quality of life, including poor functioning and more sick days from work,9 and an increased risk of all-cause mortality.10

While conventional treatment for anxiety often centers on cognitive-behavioral therapy and medications like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), these approaches are not always affordable, sustainable or effective.

Data from the Anxiety and Depression Association of America suggests the prevalence of anxiety disorders in the U.S. may be as high as 40 million, or about 18 percent of the population over the age of 18, making it the most common mental illness in the nation.11

Notably, research published in JAMA Internal Medicine concluded 1 in 4 senior citizens is consistently taking benzodiazepine medications — also known as “benzos” — such as Valium or Xanax to address anxiety and other concerns like insomnia. The research, which analyzed the medication-use patterns of 576 older adults during an eight-year period, found:12,13

  • Caucasians were four times more likely than minority patients to move toward long-term antianxiety medication use
  • Seniors issued a large pill count with their initial prescription were more likely to become long-term users of benzodiazepine drugs
  • For every 10 additional days of medication prescribed, a patient’s risk of long-term use nearly doubled over the next year
  • The diagnosis rates for anxiety and depression were about the same for both short-term and long-term benzodiazepine users

Besides the risk of dependency, seniors who use antianxiety drugs long-term are at greater risk of broken hips, car crashes and falls.14 Benzos have also been linked to a higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease.15

Older adults who used benzodiazepines for three months or more had a 51 percent greater risk of Alzheimer’s disease than those who did not, and the risk increased the longer the drugs were used. According to the authors, “The stronger association observed for long term exposures reinforces the suspicion of a possible direct association …”

Even more worrying, recent research16,17 shows the risk of overdose dramatically increases when benzos are combined with opioids. During the first 90 days of concurrent use, your risk of a deadly overdose rises fivefold, compared to taking an opioid alone.

Between Days 91 and 180, the risk remains nearly doubled, after which the risk tapers off, becoming roughly equal to taking an opioid alone. Whatever your age, I believe there are better, natural ways to treat anxiety than prescription drugs.

Poll Suggests Women More Affected by Anxiety Than Men

A 2018 poll conducted by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) notes 39 percent of Americans report being more anxious this year than last year.18 The APA shared other outcomes from their survey, as follows:19

  • The 2018 national anxiety score was 51, representing a five-point jump from last year
  • Anxiety scores were up across age groups, with millennials reflecting more anxiety than baby boomers or Generation X (ages 39 to 53)
  • Anxiety among baby boomers increased seven points from 2017 to 2018 — the greatest increase recorded across all survey groups
  • While more Americans are anxious this year than last year in all five of the categories surveyed — finances, health, politics, relationships and safety — the most significant increase year to year related to anxiety about paying bills
  • Women are more anxious than men: 57 percent of women ages 18 to 49 years reported being more anxious year to year as compared to just 38 percent of men of the same age

With respect to the survey outcomes, past APA president Dr. Anita Everett, acting director of the U.S. Center for Mental Health Services, said:20

“This poll shows U.S. adults are increasingly anxious — particularly about health, safety and finances. Increased stress and anxiety can significantly impact many aspects of people’s lives, including their mental health, and it can affect families. EFT Is an Effective Tool for Addressing Anxiety

If you are looking for a convenient natural way to cope with anxiety, you may want to try the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). It’s easy to use and can produce rapid and long-lasting results. Its effectiveness lies in helping you reprogram your body’s reactions to the common, unavoidable stressors of everyday life that are very likely among the root causes of your anxiety.

EFT, which has been around since the 1990s, is somewhat like acupuncture without needles. Other Nondrug Options to Help You Cope With Anxiety

Anxiety, like most chronic health issues, needs a holistic approach. As you determine the best methods for addressing your anxiety, it’s best to look at all of the potential factors that may be contributing to it. Even a series of small changes can make a big difference in your mood. For starters, you might take steps to:

Address common nutrient deficiencies — Even if you try to eat healthy, chances are you may have a hidden nutrient deficiency that is interfering with your mental and physical health. As noted in the current research, a lack of omega-3 fats may be one of the nutritional factors contributing to your anxiety.

Besides getting enough animal-based omega-3s into your diet by eating fatty fish like anchovies and sardines or taking a high-quality supplement like krill oil, you’ll also want to optimize your magnesium and vitamin D levels. Breathe properly — While it may sound funny to suggest breathing as a partial solution to anxiety, you’d be surprised how many people breathe in such a way as to put their health in jeopardy. Most stress-relief methods tend to focus on taking big, deep breaths, but this is actually the opposite of what you should do. For helpful tips, check out my article “Breathing Techniques for Greater Health and Fitness.”

Exercise regularly — Some of my favorite forms of exercise include high-intensity interval training, stretching, yoga, walking and weight training. The four-minute Nitric Oxide Dump workout is particularly beneficial for boosting your health and sense of well-being.

Get the right nutrition —Lowering your intake of gluten, processed foods and sugar is recommended for people of all ages and levels of health, and most especially for anyone suffering from anxiety. Lectins may also be problematic for some people.

Your body needs healthy (preferably grass fed, organic) food to function optimally. Some of the top antianxiety foods include blueberries, dark chocolate, fermented foods, leafy greens and turmeric.

Lower your stress — A common cause of anxiety relates to stressful people and situations. While this area can be challenging to address, you won’t regret the steps you take to reduce your anxiety levels by putting limits on your exposure to people and situations that tax you emotionally.

Optimize your gut health — A healthy gut is vital to your overall health. If you have a sluggish or overactive digestive system, your immune system is going to be negatively affected. To ensure your body has the right balance of healthy gut flora, get more fiber into your diet and consider taking a daily probiotic supplement.

EMF and Mold Exposure Are Two Other Possible Anxiety Triggers

Given the increased use of technology in nearly every area of life, it’s possible your anxiety could be somewhat influenced by exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs). If you don’t know much about EMFs and how they impact human health, it’s important you become educated.

At a minimum, you should know excessive free radicals triggered by low-frequency microwave exposure from wireless technologies have been linked to anxiety, depression, memory changes and sleep disturbances, as well as a number of other conditions known to affect people of all ages.21

You can reduce your EMF exposure by maintaining electronic gadgets away from your sleeping area. Never sleep with your cellphone under your pillow and, ideally, turn off the TV, lights and any other electronic devices at least two hours before bedtime, as these kinds of light sources impede melatonin production.

Beyond this, you may want to investigate any potential toxic exposures that could be triggering your anxiety. For one, anxiety is a common symptom of toxic mold exposure. The best way to troubleshoot potential mold exposure is to look for a pattern. For example: Do your anxiety symptoms improve when you spend time away from your home or office? Do you feel better outdoors than indoors?

Any steps you take to pursue nondrug alternatives for dealing with anxiety will be well worth it now and in the long term. If you are already taking an antianxiety medication, I encourage you to talk to your doctor about whether it’s time to discontinue it. Track Your Omega-3 Level Using the Omega-3 Index

Despite being aware of the importance of omega-3s, most people are unsure of how much they need or if they are getting enough from their diet or a supplement. Get ‘Hooked’ on Cat’s Claw: The Many Benefits of This Amazonian Herb

Named after its unique, curved hook-like thorns, cat’s claw is a plant that has been long valued in South and Central America.1 But there’s more to this herb than its peculiar appearance. Cat’s claw is actually well-known for its traditional medicinal uses, from boosting the immune system,2 speeding up healing of wounds3 and even for relieving gastrointestinal problems.4 Discover more interesting facts about this herb by reading this article.

What Is Cat’s Claw?

Native to the Amazon rainforest and other areas of Central and South America, cat’s claw is an herb you’ll find thriving in forest areas. You can easily spot it — just look for woody vines with hook-shaped thorns growing on them, resembling a kitty’s claw. This plant can grow to heights of 100 feet. The thorns actually serve an important purpose, though, as they allow the vines to attach themselves to tree barks.5,6

Cat’s claw plant is known by many names, including Uña de Gato, Paraguayo, Liane du Pérou, Garabato and Samento. It’s also been dubbed the “life-giving vine of Peru.”7,8 However, do not confuse it with cat’s foot (Antennaria dioica L.), which is a small perennial plant9 — these two are very different.

There are two cat’s claw species that have been used for medicinal purposes: Uncaria tomentosa and Uncaria guianensis. According to EMedicineHealth, U. tomentosa is more commonly used in the U.S., while U. guianensis is popular in Europe.10 U. tomentosa can be seen growing in organic soils on mountain slopes of rainforests, anywhere between 250 and 900 meters (820 to 2,952 feet) above sea level. Disturbed forests may also contain this plant, albeit it’s rarely seen in secondary forests.

However, there are serious threats to U. tomentosa, particularly overharvesting and the destruction of old growth rainforest. As a result, U. guianensis is becoming more popularly used, as it grows in lower elevations near rivers, making it easier for wild harvesters to find, collect and transport.11

The roots and the bark of the plant are what are used for the medicinal preparations of cat’s claw,12 as they contain an impressive blend of chemicals, such as alkaloids and glycosides.13 Cat’s claw can come in liquid extracts, powders and tablet form. It can also be used to make tea.14

The Medicinal Uses of Cat’s Claw Have Been Known for a Long Time

Cat’s claw is not a recent discovery, as there have been accounts of it being used in the early times. South Americans made use of it to ease conditions such as asthma, arthritis, stomach ulcers and inflammation.15 The ancient Incan civilization also used cat’s claw for viral infections and for immune system stimulation.16

In the 1970s, scientists conducted studies to learn more about its healing potential. Their aim was to study the potential of this plant in easing symptoms of cancer and other ailments. A 1989 study also found that the roots contain alkaloid oxidants that may stimulate the immune system.17

Cat’s Claw Potential Health Benefits

Cat’s claw’s potential for boosting health mainly comes from the oxindole alkaloids found in its roots and bark. These alkaloids are said to stimulate the immune system, leading to this herb’s various medicinal and healing benefits.18

Ingredients

  • Water
  • Fresh lemon juice
  • Cat’s claw bark or ground powder
  • Raw honey or spices (to taste)

Procedure

  1. Boil water and pour into a cup, along with a few drops of lemon juice. The acid from the lemons will help release the tannins in the tea.
  2. Add the bark or powder. If using the bark, one to two average-sized pieces will be enough. For the powder form, 1 to 2 teaspoons is ideal.
  3. Let steep for five to 10 minutes. Strain and add a teaspoon of honey or a dash of spices to taste.

Be Aware of Cat’s Claw’s Side Effects

Cat’s claw is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Because of its use for birth control, women who are also trying to conceive should refrain from using it.30

Small amounts of cat’s claw will not cause any side effects for most people; however, Organic Facts notes that people with allergies to plants belonging to the Rubiaceae family should refrain from using it, as it may promote reactions such as mild irritation or itchy eyes, even through simple physical contact or if ingested.31

There are also rare cases of acute kidney failure and kidney disease linked to cat’s claw ingestion.32 Other health problems that may be compounded by cat’s caw include:33

  • Leukemia — Using this herb may worsen this illness.
  • Bleeding disorders — Cat’s claw may slow blood clotting and increase the risk of bruising or bleeding. 
  • Autoimmune illnesses like lupus and multiple sclerosis — Prompting the immune system to become overactive may worsen the symptoms of these diseases.
  • Low blood pressure — This herb has blood pressure-lowering effects, which may cause further problems.

People who are about to undergo surgery should also refrain from using cat’s claw at least two weeks prior to the procedure, as it may make it difficult for blood pressure to be controlled.34

Cat’s Claw May Be Beneficial, but Use It Wisely

While most people will generally benefit from using cat’s claw, if you fall under the groups mentioned above, then it’s better to forego the use of this herb. Cat’s claw should only be used as a dietary supplement to complement your healthy lifestyle, and should not be treated as the primary solution to your health woes.

It is going to be an especially haunting Halloween for the Khazarian mafia banking elite, because they have been given an October 31 deadline to return the gold they stole or face being systematically hunted down and exterminated, say Asian secret society, CIA, and White Dragon Society sources.  After that deadline, bounties of gold will be placed on senior bankers starting with the heads of the EU Central Bank, the Bank of Japan, the Federal Reserve Board, and the BIS, the sources say.

The White Dragon Society (WDS) has offered the Khazarian mafia a way out of this situation.  All they have to do is monetize, in a constructive and reality-based manner, $40 trillion worth of 1934 Henry Morgenthau Bonds to finance the establishment of a meritocratic future planning agency.  This would be enough to end poverty, stop environmental destruction, and finance human expansion into the universe.  The alternative is death for all the Khazarian gangsters involved in central bank fraud and Babylonian debt slavery.

In the U.S., meanwhile, Pentagon sources say U.S. President Donald “Trump had a briefing and dinner with top military brass at the White House on October 23 in a blunt message to Israel, the Democrats, the deep state, and its invading army from Mexico not to steal the midterm elections.”  The photo below shows clearly where the U.S. military stands.
There is also a major push going on to take down the rogue regime of Saudi Israelia, multiple sources agree.  The murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi is, despite attempts by the Khazarians to distract us with false flags etc., turning out to have been a fatal mistake.

The heads of state of Russia, Germany, and France were in Istanbul last week to meet with Turkish President Recep Erdogan to discuss this murder and the future of the rogue Zionist Saudi Israelia regime, according Russian sources.

CIA sources tried to convince this writer that the murder never actually took place by sending the following statement about the summit, to which the U.S., Israel, and China were not invited:

“They are there to discuss the Khashoggi matter.  They are trying to figure out how to release the truth about Khashoggi.  He is NOT dead.  He is also not available for anyone to meet.  The heads of the special powers that be, U.S., Russia, China, Turkey, France, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Israel, know exactly where he is.  Let’s just say Khashoggi fucked them all.  He turned their own unacknowledged special-application-program weapon against them.  He had the access codes.”

It seems the satan-worshiping Khazarians have a thing about peeling faces of people while they are still alive.  It is apparently intended to harvest the maximum amount of pain from the victim as a sacrifice to Ba’al, Jewish WDS sources say.

Also, “with the EU parliament voting 325-1 for an EU arms embargo and [German Chancellor Angela] Merkel leading, Trump may be forced to use the EU arms embargo on Saudi Arabia to push for a UN arms embargo,” the sources say.

Khashoggi was murdered because he was about to expose Saudi Israelia’s use of chemical weapons in Yemen, according to the Express newspaper in England.

There is now a big push by the Khazarians to get Khashoggi out of the news cycle, the Pentagon sources say.  They add that the alleged murder of 11 Jews at a synagogue in Pittsburgh last week was “a false-flag failed Hail Mary to get Trump to ignore Jewish vote fraud or migrant caravan, back gun control, and give Jewish community centers taxpayers’ money for security and establish Jewish victimhood ahead of 9/11 truth and a Gaza invasion.”

He was advised to take a look at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba to see for himself that facilities had been built for huge numbers of prisoners.  We are now hearing that the arrests will begin after the November 6th midterm elections.

This is likely to be coordinated with a Russian move to shut down Khazarian regime in the Ukraine, but all we can say is that there is definitely operational silence in both the U.S. and Russia, indicating that some big, coordinated operation is taking place.

However, the CIA source mentioned above said that many of the criminals that people want arrested are already dead and all that they will be able to arrest will be “computer graphics or clones.”

Maybe, but one criminal who can be arrested is satan-worshiping Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.  Netanyahu went last week to Oman hoping the Sultan would provide him with protection from imminent arrest, Mossad sources say.  Rothschild and P2 Freemason Agnelli family sources say they are hoping to, as the Japanese expression goes, “cut off the lizard’s tail to escape” by sacrificing Netanyahu and the fake Mohammed bin Salman in order to protect themselves.

Billionaires Made More Money in 2017 Than Any Other Year in History

During a year in which so much of the world faced deep poverty, the corrosive effects of austerity, and extreme weather caused by the worsening human-caused climate crisis — from devastating hurricanesto deadly wildfires and floods — one class of individuals raked in more money in 2017 than any other year in recorded history: the world’s billionaires.

According to the Swiss bank UBS’s fifth annual billionaires reportpublished on Friday, billionaires across the globe increased their wealth by $1.4 trillion last year — an astonishing 20 percent — bringing their combined wealth to an astonishing $8.9 trillion.

“The past 30 years have seen far greater wealth creation than the Gilded Age,” the UBS report notes. “That period bred generations of families in the US and Europe who went on to influence business, banking, politics, philanthropy, and the arts for more than 100 years.”

UBS estimates that the world now has a total of 2,158 billionaires, with 179 billionaires created last year. The United States alone is home to 585 billionaires — the most in the world — up from 563 in 2017.

Meanwhile, according to a June report by UN Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights Philip Alston, 18.5 million Americans live in extreme poverty and “5.3 million live in Third World conditions of absolute poverty.”

A significant percentage of the “newly created” billionaires are hardly the self-made men — and they are overwhelmingly men — of popular lore. According to UBS, 40 of the 179 new billionaires created last year inherited their wealth — a trend that has driven an explosion of wealth inequality over the past several decades.

According to UBS, this trend will continue to accelerate over the next 20 years, given that there are currently 701 billionaires over the age of 70.

“A major wealth transition has begun. Over the past five years (2012–2017), the sum passed by deceased billionaires to beneficiaries has grown by an average of 17 percent each year,” the UBS report concludes. “Over the next two decades we expect a wealth transition of $3.4 trillion worldwide — almost 40 percent of current total billionaire wealth.”
